Do you guys have examples of anime directors that fell off in your opinion? Mamoru Oishii gotta be the prime example of this with the "show" he created back in 2021 which nobody talks about.
| Sorry in advance for the "rant" Imagine criticizing modern anime and its creators for the “lack of focus” studios have, telling some directors they are “geniuses at copying others” or “devoid of any substance.” Then, decades later, they make an abysmal attempt at comedy that not only copies others (failing to even do that right) but also lacks any semblance of substance. Even worse, they act as if they are above tropes, making fun of them while still using them anyway. I know he said this show can serve as “strong medicine” and “piss off an old man,” but it fails on both fronts since old men aren’t watching this, and the people who usually watch this type of show will find the referential humor boring, tacked on, and nonsensical. It’s like if a Letterboxd user created a show just to brag about how cultured he is. The show itself is not funny at all, the animation is mediocre at best, it can look good in some moment but it feel rushed and cheap most of the time, the character design is either uninspired or straight up ugly and not in the good “experimental way” speaking of that, they also have live-action sequences but they are just not funny either like you would see in Panty and Stocking, not even a fraction of Trigger’s worst shows. The most interesting part about this is the presumption that this project was merely a money laundering scheme from a company called ICHIGO INC., which is a sustainable energy company. They only opened a subsidiary called Ichigo Animation, but this company hasn’t done anything since 2021, and their contact section is no longer working. The show was also a collaboration with Studio DRIVE and Production I.G. They bragged about how they got him behind it and that this was his ORIGINAL creation, which is the most disappointing aspect of all of this because it feels so empty. It has nothing to say, it’s not funny, and it’s not even so bad that it’s good; it’s just plain boring. This wasn’t a deep, subtle critique of modern anime since it embraces the worst aspects of it. I assume he just wanted to make more money and stay relevant, which he failed to do since nobody talks about him that much nowadays outside of anime news networks. I hear zero hype surrounding his new projects (if they even past pre-production at this point), and that show faded into irrelevance before it was completed, especially since they split the show into two parts. Also, nobody discusses the live-action movies he made recently. It’s so sad to see someone who was involved in on of the most influential films of all time ending up doing an insult to not only art but it’s legacy, If you want to create this kind of wacky over the top show and maybe make fun of others, at least do it right you know. Some say there might've been problems in the production and stuff which i doubt since they had time to make this, 3 studios behind, professional that should've known better, and according to same, it was based on a visual novel made by Oshii that has pretty much the exact same plot execpt the creepy anemic grey haired loser is male there so i doubt there was any struggle to figure out the nothing burger plot.  |
| oshii never fell because he was already down, he is an embarassment. He may be a good animator and artist but a failure as a director. |

Yes, most of the big anime artists have a stinker of too in their careers, but there are some guys in the industry who are consistently bad to mediocre. Also I wouldn't call Vlad Love a bad show. Its main problem is being too much idiosyncratic...which tends to happen with vanity projects. |

Also, none of the Ghost in the Shell animated media are faithful to the original manga but i'd hope Science saru can fix that in 2026.

| True, Oshii's career went downhill after a mere 21 episodes of Urusei Yatsura. Hiroyuki Yamaga is another example. His biggest hit was Honneamise in 1987. His attempt to replicate this success never went anywhere, unlike Anno's milking of Evangelion. Osamu Tezuka hasn't directed anything since 1989. Thank goodness his son is doing a better job than Miyazaki's son. |

Heck, there's so much shit that it is honestly astounding that the reputation of the 1995 movie can carry the franchise to this day. Stand Alone Complex is also excellent, but I feel that one has been forgotten, unfortunately. |

| Did you create an alt account for this? Oshihi didnt direct Jin-roh btw. The Lupin epsiode he directed was pretty awesome so he still does great work from time to time. |
