I don’t think I’ve ever been this moved by an episode before. Dan Da Dan really knows how to deliver those emotional moments without going overboard. Honestly, this episode was just perfect.

Why was this shit an entire episode? Worst episode of the series by far. Yes, it had great direction and cinematography, but outside of that everything else was incredibly surface-level and mediocre. I did not care whatsoever about this random ass yokai's backstory and her scary kid unfortunately. Also unfortunately, they hog up every last minute of the episode and it isn't even like it had incredible or even good writing to at least have me appreciate it. The entire story can be summed up in a sentence and there is absolutely no deep meaning behind any of it.

6/10 episode for good direction and cinematography
@dymable it's adds depth to the series & showcases that the yokai aren't merely evil spirits

Don't wanna be a jerk here, but I thought that I watch wacky shounen about stolen balls and meme fights with ghosts & aliens, not random forced drama with characters who had like 20 minutes of screentime.

It's really well directed, but made me bored cause it's just so unneseccary in a show like this.
@kataneer it's interesting how my friend thought the exact same thing when we were discussing about this episode. It'd be a stretch to call it forced drama, since thematically, this really fits in, given what we have seen about Turbo Granny's origin. Acro and Aira's flashbacks added another layer to their story. Unnecessary? I'd hard disagree - this was phenomenal.

Overindulgent and unnecessarily bleak for a comedy anime. I mean, we saw a girl get HUMAN TRAFFICKED and not only do we NOT get closure on that, but the episode ends on an almost joyful note.

Frankly, it came off as lazy writing, like "I cant write compelling characters with well-developed arcs so I'll just make a character with the darkest backstory I can conjure up for the sole purpose of getting a reaction out of the viewer. "

I've absolutely LOVED the show thus far, so I can only hope this is not the direction the rest of the show takes because damn I miss when we were just looking for my man's balls.
@FieryPotatoe Pretty obvious the girl died considering the dialogue and no one survives after being taken by the yakuza especially someone so young. Dandadan is a mix of a lot of different genres, its not a parody.

@kataneer "Unnecessary" this is literally what Dandadan is about. It was never JUST brazen comedy and action sequences. Get used to it if you want to stick around.

Me watching episodes 1-3: "It's a really good show, but I do wish it would take itself a bit more seriously."

Dandadan episode 7: "Bet." Shoots me in the back of the FUCKING HEAD!!!

@FieryPotatoe You are heartless bro.
@ZXEAN Nah, it isn't heartless, I really found the backstory quite sad and I was crying a bit but I understand if others don't share the same opinion. I don't like VE episode 10 backstory for example since by that point I was really annoyed by random repetitive sad backstories from side characters while everyone was crying in the thread which I respect but it doesn't mean I'll share the same opinion if I don't felt the same. I think it works in Dandadan better since it isn't a drama series and so it's easy to execute sad backstory like this while drama series for me doesn't work well if they have a lot. At least from my perspective. To be fair, I think FieryPotatoe was expecting the series to be more full comedy.

Best episode of the year for sure!

With all the elements that an excellent episode has to have.
There was a fight, good story development, surprise and emotion.
And what can we say about the stories of Aira and Acrobatica... A waterfall passed by here.

i love how the manga adaptation was done, especially during the flashback. It subtly transitions from a happy and desperate scene to a dark one in such a beautiful way. The animation and the implicit message conveying the mother's feelings, supported by the scoring that complements the animation, are truly a masterpiece

@ExpandCheese Judging by his anime list and favourites you can already tell he is a hentai addict. Came here for some ecchi comidy but end up getting a tragic story about a mom and her daughter. That's why he might be disappointed, Guys like this appreciate this kind of story only in case of NTR Hentai.
@ZXEAN That makes no sense. I also love hentai and ecchi yet I found this scene quite sad. Judging people for what genres they like is just crazy lol. rohan121 is chill, just like I said, not everyone is going to share the same opinion and we should respect it.

@dymable Meaning is not what makes a story. A simple tragedy like this more than works when the execution is this flawless. You're right, the "story" is barely anything. but it couldn't matter less.

It's quality is actually of a really similar kind to "way home" from vinland saga season 2. Though I think this one is even better somehow.

@Viriathus Thanks for your answer!
It's obvious that Dandadan is inspired by Japanese folklore (and folklore in general).
The reason I'm confused is that I thought it was established that Aira is able to see ghosts only because of the golden ball.
That's why it seems convenient to me that she saw Acro-Silky when she was a child (on top of the misunderstanding that follows).
It is possible that she was able to see ghosts by virtue of being a child and lost that ability later, as you said.
However, if that's true, it is not clearly conveyed and I don't think it's a good way to write her backstory in any case.
@gorkthe134th Well, to me was perfect. But its mostly by my upbring i guess. We here have nothing in common with Japanese, but some cultural aspects like this, we have alot. Funny that like Japan, im also from a vulcanic island in the middle of the Atlantic. Must be island things haha
But i can see why you feel like that, but to me, it was perfect.

This was one of the most impactful singular episodes that I have watched in a long while. The way the backstory of the "villain" was told and orchestrated was absolutely brilliant, the director as well as the animators went wild with this episode. This type of storytelling through mainly showing can be tricky to pull off right, but was done to a T by the staff at Science Saru.

This episode definitely made me a fan, as If I already wasn't one.

Maybe there's hope for modern Shounen. Also how great is to actually have a good director and the viewer be able to feel it. The story itself of the 2nd half is pretty simple and most viewers wouldn't really care if it was presented normally. But the lack of dialogue, only sound being a both sad and beautiful piano, not rushing on their relationship, the way they showed the distorted view when the mother gets desperate. Everything is perfectly calculated to elevate the feeling to its max potential. This is what anime should be, or at least strive to be, not just crazy animated fights but with no stakes or emotional weight.
