I was optimistic when the game was announced to be the definitive version of DQ3 but then i started noticing some small changes that i didn't like but i was still keeping hope (copium in hindsight) and when they just released the official character design art my fears were confirmed to be true, they had censored many of the female character classes outfits in a very blatant and silly way to reduce the nudity and sexiness, mind you this does not affect the story or the gameplay, only some character visuals.

The female warrior was given a crop top and shorts to censor her boobs and thighs as well as a dorsal piece like the one she has on the front to hide her ass.

For reference this is how the female warrior should look like from behind view in a battle if they had faithfully respected the 1988 original character design.

@EcchiGodMamster Agreed, this is terrible, they ruined one of my favorite video game girls with useless censorship.

Those visuals are irrelevant as they do not exist within the game.

@Lucifrost correct, as i mentioned before the in-game differences are small and subtle because it's pixel art after all, this is how the character looks in-game.

It's honestly annoying how this stuff keeps happening. Blood and gore are A ok but a girl with cleavage/ass shot is where people draw the line.

@Tropisch Same has been happening among many anime fans for years, unfortunately. "Gore good, nudity bad". Many of them are the target audience of jRPG games, so it's not surprising such weird and, in my opinion, unnecessary censorship is taking place in those video games as well.

At least it's not that much of a big deal in this case, since the change does not affect the way that character is portrayed in the game itself. It could be worse. Let's not forget how gender choice have been removed from the game, so you will have to choose between "Type A" and "Type B" options when creating your character, lol. It won't affect the gameplay as well, serving only as mere two labels representing certain types of outlook of the main character, but it's still a more noticeable modification of the very first version of Dragon Quest 3 than the female warrior's design as seen directly during the game. And to be frank, quite weird, given how the original model worked well back in the day and would work okay in the modern times, or in the future. Not a huge change, but in my opinion, quite forced, but whatever.

If that was the case they would remove all homosexuality and girl bosses. Their target demographic is esg/dei/bridge investors.

I sit in a really awkward position in debates like these overall.

DQ3 is iconic and historically relevant to the medium and being frustrated that elements of that can be changed to match a "global audience" but I get called a gooner or something when it is clear my frustration is a matter of principle.

The scary thing is the global audience simply because in the next ten or so years that will be china and what then? Less black people and no homosexuality? The precedent has been established that we need to bend to the will of such a nebulous force which will never end well.

@rohan121 DEI always exist in video games. Please stop saying that shit.

@Adnash & @Tropisch Sexual themes and violence don't have the same effect on the brain. Sexual themes whether it's fiction or not effect the brain the same way. desensitization to violence is a thing but the thing is most people aren't dont get that way.

Censoring sexual themes when it's part of the games marketing is stupid ( DOA6 and Senran kagura developers )

@Amityblight Umm, I did not address that kind of things in my post, so I'm not sure if that part of your message refers to me, or only the last one. ;p If it's the latter, then yeah, it's not only weird, but plain stupid to censor themes that were somewhat important for the game's marketing before its premiere. I'm against gatekeeping, and I'm all for making games more appealing to different types of gamers, but it mustn't come with turning a game of a specific type into a shapeless shadow of its former self. We are talking about retro games, so there's a difference between modern quality of life improvements and meddling too much with a video game. When someone wants to play, dunno, a game about World War 2, then censoring totalitarian symbols or violence, for a game meant to be played by adults, is ridicilous. Especially if that game was re-released after many years and those elements had been there for years.

This is some of the most ridiculous censorship we've been seeing in the past few years, especially given that the complaints about the OG character designs are coming from an obnoxiosly loud yet very small minority, when will companies learn to listen to those who speak with their wallets instead of those who are trying to win a screaming competition?

@Adnash 100% agree

I'll also add the change is utterly useless, you still have the choice between a male and female character, changing the names to "type A" and "type B" isn't gonna change that

@DigiCat My point exactly, when will companies learn that the so called modern audience don't exist and that censoring their product will only hurt their long time fans and loyal fanbases to the point that they might become jaded and boycott the game out right and be happy that it failed.

@Adnash I agree messing with it is silly. You should improve on previous work. I was addressing nudity / statement people.

Personal think no one should buy any of these remasters and remakes they are lazy and bad.

People should blame the ones who worked on this remake, or more likely the higher-ups, than any boogeyman. They ultimately have final say. Look at the Persona 3 remake. They might either be a pain to get or paid dlc in the case of Ann's Persona 5 outfit. But the "special" outfits aren't censored in the slightest. They even added boob physics, which I'm pretty sure wasn't in the PS2 version. And I've seen no one bitch about that. At least not a substantial enough amount for anyone to pay any attention to complaints.

I've also seen no one complain about the jiggle continuing to be a thing the games like Tekken and Street Fighter.

Ahhhh remember when a couple of months ago someone shared that they were going to censor just some lines and some were like "nah, it just a small change. Don worry about it". We knew this was going to happen.

The problem is the fact that there is censorship, and (on this case) applied to a remake of a game. It is bad for the fans and an insult for the original designers.

Some will cope and blame conservatives, but we know it is not for them, it is because there is some good sexualization (Last of Us 2, Baldurs Gate 3, and many other cases in which sex = good) and bad (this for example).

It is stupid and Im tired of it. I hope they dont sell anything.

I looked through the last thread again, and found not a single person defending the changes or calling them "small." I said fans would still buy the game in spite of changes.

Bullshit. There has never been anything more than pure speculation and cope behind this claim. In fact there is even less in the way of evidence than even violence, and that has been pretty much disproven time and time again.
