Greetings everyone~

I'm sure many of you dear MAL members find many new anime here in MAL....

....but how did you do that before you even knew the existence of MAL? ;)

I would just randomly watch stuff based on the name. Like tenjou tenge, I don't know what it means but it sounds cool XD It honestly worked pretty well for a hot minute. I watched moster, code geass, death note, spiral, air gear, full metal panic etc. all based on the title.

Personal recommendations from friends mostly, but also just watching YouTubers who talked about anime, back when "anitubers" were a new and novel concept

Only really started using MAL more recently and that's to check out upcoming seasonal anime, and forum discussions.

Before I would find random anime recommended by people (friends or randoms online), or for seasonal anime I would just check the 'Recent Releases' section of the site that I watched. MAL just makes things more organized and a bit easier, but not much has changed on the front of finding new anime to watch for me.

I started with what was trending on social media, like Facebook groups or Reddit subs. Then when I found out there was a lot of anime on Hulu, Prime & Netflix, I browsed through their selections.

Man back in the day early internet days you use Altavista or Yahoo and you found what you found on random sites also back in that day you could no go to free streaming sites or paid streaming sites.

But before that you found out from friends or you bought a random anime that had on the inside of the VHS box suggestion of other anime´s released from the same distributor. A popular one back then was Manga Video. Also popular way could be magazines having a tiny section for it.

At first my cousin who introduced me to anime just recommended things to me and after that other friends also recommended things or I randomly watched a clip on Instagram or YouTube or something like that.

In Internet you can find whatever u want. Example: Deep Web. Though i dont recommend going there and i didnt go too.
Just trying to search one page or another one, mainly jkanime + animeid. In the worst cases Youtube or random websites. Then you have 9anime & Crunchy mainly.
I usually go with 9anime cause it has the thing that u know where u left, or what was the last chapter of your watch.

Back in old days, the Internet was limited and slow, and we were using our town's local net more often. We had our local torrent site where some rich guys with better Internet uploaded games, music, films, anime, and anything else for us. Communistic Internet that was. We were watching and discussing anime and films, and played online games on local servers together with townsfolk. There were good old times of tranquility, wholesomeness and camaraderie. I miss those days.

I used to rent them on DVD. But that was expensive and since most anime completely sucks... a really bad investment. I got jaded and quit watching for years. well, not completely. I did watch the occasional ghibli film and be reminded of how good anime can be. I'm not sure why I decided to start watching again around 2017. But by that point literally everything was at my fingertips and most importantly: free of cost. But most anime still sucks so it's kind of a double edged sword. Now it costs a lot of time and that shit don't grow on trees.

Back in the 90s, we used to read magazines like Animerica. I've got some of my old ones in the bathroom currently and it's fun to read about the old times.

I used review sites like THEM OG. Also, I used to rent a lot of stuff, so I'd see their ads for upcoming Anime'. Or browse shelves when Hastings still existed ( RIP my former source of all things Anime'/Manga). I also still just look through sites like CR. And followed the discussions when those existed.

@Sheol01 I've got issues from 1994 and 1998 in the bathroom right now. The ads are super fun to see now. Really crazy to think about how expensive two episodes of anime on VHS were in 1990s dollars!

I did find anime to watch mostly through random corners of the internet: anime forums, reddit, youtube, other anime databases, google search and even some discords...
I remember spending a lot of time reading synopsis in particular, but also giving a chance to most anime recommended to me pretty easily :)
