Recently I've come to realize that while I watch a large amount of anime (and a decent amount of live-action and cartoon shows), I hardly ever watch movies these days. It's not that I don't have anything good left to watch, but rather that I find it a lot harder to sit down and watch a full movie than a show. Is it just me being picky? Probably.

And on that note, I was wondering how often y'all watch movies! Is it a regular thing or more of an occasional occurrence??

Thank you for reading and have a great day!

On average, I probably watch about 6-7 movies a month, usually over the weekend. Although that might increase if I'm feeling burnt out on anime.

Last year though, I watched a lot of movies - about one every 2-3 days. I kinda got hooked on Letterboxd and would check out random lists of top users to look for things to watch. But over time, I found myself becoming a bit miserable doing that. I realised I was watching movies for the sake of it, rather than being genuinely interested in what I chose to watch. So now I make sure to only watch things I have a genuine interest/curiosity about. I feel much better going at my own pace. I also watch movies with my friends more now which is way more enjoyable and fulfilling.

But yeah, I probably prioritize watching anime too nowadays, it's just more convenient given the episode lengths.

If we talk about new movies whenever I see something that looks interesting to me. Which is pretty rare nowadays tbh

If we talk about older movies I rewatch some when I am in mood for them.Still I spend way less time in movies than I spend in a lot of other things.

completely stopped at this point. Since i began to keep track in the mid 2010's, i saw 120 films in 2018, 17 in 2019, 7 in 2020, 2 in 2021 (one was Your Name), none in 2022, 2 (both anime themed, The First Slam Dunk when it arrived in italian theaters and Gintama - Yorozuya Forever) in 2023, none in 2024 and don't even plan to.

i've never been that much into cinema to begin with, for example i never went to watch a movie on theaters from late 1998 to the summer of 2016 (12 to 30 years old), and it was the TMNT film with Bebop, Rocksteady and Krang, a moment i've been waiting for since the early 90s. During the second half of the 2010s i've probably watched more movies (in 5 years at best) compared to the entire 33 years combined, just more or less because of fear of missing out convos with coworkers or something, and in hindsight i regret a lot of that phase when i could have just watched more anime to begin with. And especially, i hate modern hollywood, especially after everything discovered since 2017 even if i'm convinced there's still a lot of dirt hidden under the rug. Now that i'm almost 40, time goes at 4x speed and job commitments are heavier and heavier, there's no more time for this stuff.

Just about the same amount of anime I watch, which isn't a lot these days. I find it easier to watch live-action tho. I have to concentrate on anime more to understand and read subtitles.

Maybe every 2 weeks or so. I'm always picking up DVDs, VCDs & BDs (I love physical media) from charity shops and eBay.

As for the cinema? maybe every couple of months. There's been quite a fewmovies I wanted to see this year, and have been a few times already (and the cinema is within walking distance from me.)

It depends on the moment. But I like it a lot. Going to the movies too, it's always a nice proposal.

I don't always register them on IMDb but I already have around 1500 movies watched.

Obviously your tastes also depend on whether it convinces you to watch a movie.
For example, the only movies I don't want to see (Although I saw several, for my son) are superhero movies, they bore me a lot.
But if you give me a good depressive drama, I'm happy haha.

There is also the matter of watching movies with certain actors/actresses that you really like, for whatever reason. Although the movie doesn't seem very attractive.
Example; If Evan Rachel Wood stars, I'll watch it.

Within anime, pretty often. I have a few movies to get to such as what I have in my PTW and the two remaining Kara no Kyoukai films and the Evangelion Rebuild movies.

Outside anime, rarely. Sometimes I feel like having a movie night to chill from anime, recently watched 1917 and Godzilla: Minus One. Then there’s the trashy romance movies and heaven’s forbid that I rewatched Fifty Shades of Grey for my own torture.

Not as much as I used to, but whenever something interesting comes on the telly. I think there are not a lot of good movies to see in the cinema in the past couple of years so i only go for a big title once in a blue moon. Normally there is a good movie every so often on the tv though. The other day I left the tv on in the background and the movie Ford v Ferrari came on, and it captivated me so much that I had to stop everything I was doing and watch it.

So I basically rewatched Monty Python and the Holy Grail because I had no better ideas.
And it's not like I watch a lot of anime recently, last season had like 2 worth watching...

How would you know whether something is "worth watching" if you haven't even seen it? lol. It's even more absurd when you apply this attitude to every recent movie.

At any given time, there are thousands of movies being produced, of every imaginable variety. Throughout the history of cinema, over half a million feature-length movies have been produced to choose from. (And even more when you delve into shorter films.)

I think you're just not very interested in movies in general.

@SmugSatoko Hollywood movies in like the last decade generally focus on "The Message" instead of being entertaining.

So like if I really wanted to watch movies, I guess I'd need to watch Bollywood or Korean movies...
But I ended up with anime instead.

And as far as I'm concerned, movies are just casual mass market entertainment, that's only as far as I care about them.

You ignored my point: you can't credibly claim something is or is not worth watching if you haven't even seen it.

Many millions of people all over the world find Hollywood movies from the last decade to be entertaining, including ones you may regard as preachy. Plus there are tons of movies aside from ones made in Hollywood, India and Korea...as well as from older time periods.

Some movies are casual and made for a mass market (though they can just as well be dramatic)...and others are serious works of art and/or not meant for the masses at all. (There are some bizarre films out there.)

Anyway, I'm not trying to tell you what to watch. I just happen to be a big fan of all sorts of movies and series, whether live action or animated. There are plenty of anime movies too.

@SmugSatoko I don't care to meet your credibility standards, the entire point of deciding if something is worth watching or not, is to reduce the number of movies watched that weren't worth watching.
As far as recent Hollywood is concerned, those are all guilty until proven otherwise.

And I HAVE seen some obscure movies, last time I flew I watched a Chinese movie of all things, but like those are by definition hard to come across, and more or less gave up on trying to find them and got into anime.

You have not provided any evidence or reasoning that certain movies, anime, etc. are not worth watching. (And as I have explained repeatedly, if you have not seen them, you have no way of knowing such a thing.) All you have done is make an empty and redundant claim amounting to, "I have not seen them, but they're not worth watching because they're not worth watching." lol

And nah, like I said, there are countless movies out there. Finding obscure stuff isn't hard.

If you're into Korean movies, check out Oldboy (2003) if you haven't. It has my favorite opening scene out of any movie. Oh, and it's based on a manga.

@SmugSatoko Let's think about what's "worth watching" as something that's "worth giving a chance". That way I don't need to give it a full review just to decide if I want to watch it or not. Problem solved. That still leaves room for after the fact regret, but that didn't stop me from watching movies a decade ago.

I've seen Old boy, that's the one Korean movie that's hard to miss.

That's just rewording it to mean basically the same thing. It doesn't solve the paradox of criticizing things you are in no position to have a meaningful opinion on. I understand they're not your thing...but just saying "they're not worth watching" as if everyone else shouldn't watch them either is pretty silly. I think most of the thousands of movies I've seen were worth watching.

@SmugSatoko I don't need to review all movies to have a general risk assessment across the industry.

- American Graffiti

- Heathers
- Hey Good Lookin'
- Pretty in Pink
- Sixteen Candles

Add in documentaries, and we also have Brats and Tell Them You Love Me. That all seems like a lot, and that's because it is for my standards. I only really watched a handful of movies between 2019 and 2022.
