@FedeMetal But it all happened before he put in any of the hard work. He hadn't even managed a "little flame" before he suddenly survived being stomped by a dragon and proceeded to kill it with one punch.

@Adverrito They take us all for fools.
@Love_And_Forward @Adverrito

It's normal that Rick considers himself weak after training with Orichalcum Fist. After getting killed in training so many times, he must thought that maybe dragons are not that tough as people make them look, or he just had luck, and can't compare himself with experienced adventurers. Just my opinion.

@FedeMetal Yes, after his S-ranked senpai fainted looking at it, and all the other adventurers inside the barrier got roflstomped.

Stop now, the levels of apologia are getting suffocating. This was a bad backstory.

Yeah, I took it as, "you destroyed every magic circuit in your body" (in other words, you'll never be able to use strong magic again).

And then Reanette says, "And since you ... fought on courage alone, without giving up you should be able to grow strong, even now, and fight alongside us."

In other words, even now, without any working magic circuits, you are dedicated enough to get strong enough to join us.

So I think he just got a single desperate glimpse at what having an OP skill is like, and it saved him, but now it's gone.

The shows a bit cheesy but I enjoyed this episode, showing off protag-kun's genuinely heroic personality back when he was a "weak nobody" did lots for the character.

Rick's backstory of following in the footsteps of the Legend of Yamato story legend, that grow as he became, but he could not be the adventurer that he desired to be, only working as the guild receptionist alongside Alisa for pretty much the latter half of his 30-year-old life. All that was about to change when a Giant Troll comes into town, and is also where he meets Reanette being saved by her.

The S-rank adventurer being part of the legendary Orichalum Fist party, in the eyes of the receptionist who has a dream to defeat Kaiser Alsapiet, even she didn't think that Rick would develop much if he started this late in his 30s. But then again, she at least gives him a chance for a date, though there's no need to fear of monsters since she's the proclaimed Guillotine Swordmaiden. The other adventurers whom Rick serviced all the while, they're as capable as they come, but when the dragon appears, it's a league on its own, leaving Zaid and the others trapped within its barrier. The irony of Rick at least trying gives incentive to the adventurers to try restraining it, but it's the receptionist who've had his inborn magic restricted until now, and that's how he became part of Orichalcum Fist and went under their training, to finally pass his adventurer test.

Even at 30 years of age, to Rick, age is just a number, and he finally did it. Congratulations, I'm proud of you, Rick Gladitol.

So laaame. So he had a superpower. Lazy writing. Have 3 episodes of creating character, just to destroy the premise with 5 minutes, one-shot fight.

Epic episode!
We finally get to see how he got his own waifu... lmao
Besides the jokes, tbh, this series makes old men like me inspired to a degree. How cool!
It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

I liked this episode a lot, I saw some people complaining calling it just a flashback. For me, I think it was important and gave us a good recap of the MC back story. Good for plot building.

Uhhh that didn't fit with what we saw the first 3 episodes, how is he not a legend for killing a dragon with one hit while not even an adventurer? How did he have no self confidence?

Rick is not just a random ordinary guy after all, he's a special chosen one. Not sure how should I feel about this, so I'm gonna ask other people. Do you think the message "You can be anything as long as you train hard enough" still apply here now that you know that Rick has a cheating skill? Can he still be adventure (or even survive from that dragon) if he has no skill?

In this episode they kinda left it open, "you fried all of the magical circuits in your body"

I guess they are trying to make it sound like he lost his op ability and has to start over by training.

Which is weird because he could use level 1 magic pretty well.

I think it's funny also. He's so stressed out about failing the adventurer exam, while having the ability to kill a dragon.

I mean WTH? the first 3 eps made you think he got strong because he was trained under the best people, but in this episode, he sudden has this "hidden" talent all along? How do you go from killing a dragon as a nobody to worried about not being strong enough? I'm sorry, it just didn't make a whole lot of sense.

As a self-contained episode, I enjoyed this one well enough, but I have to agree that in the larger context, it really does undercut the series' theme of "it's never too late to follow your dreams". In terms of the stakes for the characters and or the theme, it's not completely shooting itself in the foot like "Tales of the Wedding Rings" did last season, but it does detract from Rick's underdog appeal as our protagonist.

However, in the big picture, provided the series continues to reinforce the "never too late" theme, this hidden cheat power doesn't really matter all that much. You can look on it as the message becoming more along the lines of "If you keep working hard, you'll find the power was in you all along" or something like that. Admittedly, the fact that it's cheat power of some sort does make that sort of messaging a little muddier; but this ain't supposed to be Shakespeare, so I can live with it.

I am quite thankful that the oblivious protagonist route seems to be scrapped at this point. It is very difficult to keep an oblivious protagonist sympathetic over an extended period, so I presume the series will shift Rick from being clueless to having a lot of self doubt, which allows for a lot of the same sorts of jokes, but without grating on the audience's nerves as quickly.

@Hot-Pantaloons It doesn't explain his relationship with Reanette at all. Through the first episodes he acts like he's nothing but a fly on the wall compared to her, when in fact, he already saved her life even before they started training.

Oh, not to mention!

But Rick doesn't have a mana pool, does he?!
@Love_And_Forward

Little is explained about his skill, but we have 2 things: 1) what we saw, and 2) what it's called. "Brute valor" could mean a lot of things, but I think it's pretty reasonable to assume it's a skill which gives him a magic power boost only in the most dire need against strong enemies...IE a typical shounen manga ability that allows the MC to "lose" and then suddenly come back to win against all odds as if we didn't all see it coming. Other than the dragon, we have yet to see him fight anything which actually posed a danger to him.

This had a solid production. For what it was.
With above average care taken in the areas it could.

With a generic but completely fine story.
The writing was good. So were the characters designs.

However, now the story is good.
And I am glad that is the case.

I hope Rick's life, for good or ill, only goes up.
By measure of our entertainment.

Because we deserve Ossan Isekai to become as peak as it possibly can.

Okay now I have more reason to ship MC and Reanette.

Also, she definitely looks older than she is, if she was 17 in the flashback, she should be 18-19 now, she looks like in her early twenties imo.

He probably was never able to use his ability since he used it the first time.
He also probably got told he would've needed training to be able to do so.
What followed was brutal and hellish training, and I guess he still hasn't got the chance to use it yet, so he still hasn't regained his confidence.

I don't think he lost the ability to use it, ever.
I think he will be unable until he trains enough for it to not burn his magic circuits after using it once.
And my guess is that where the anime is now, he still isn't strong enough, or at least not quite enough. He may be soon.

Which is weird because he could use level 1 magic pretty well.

A way to concile both would be "he has to train to regain his ability" aka he has to fortify his body and spirit while his magic circuits rebuild.

As of now he can only use level 1 magic, albeit to a level that is like level 7 magic lol, and my guess is that this is what his op ability is about.
Using a lv 1 little flame but it's actually as strong as level 7 hellfire because yes it is a small little flame but it's refined and tuned to oblivion thanks to absurdly strong magic control.

Besides the jokes

Not really a joke, when she accepted his invitation he thought he got a chance to go out with her, so at the very least he has some intention to pursue her.
And in previous episodes we saw she doesn't mind him claiming her as his.
And also there's a couple of scenes in the opening.
I think the story pretty much gave us the green light for shipping them officially.

I usually hate flashbacks but this was beautiful. When it started, I groaned but it ended up being beautiful. So I guess he lost his magic power in that one awesome blast? Dang. Glad the others made it. Hope we can see them again. I still think that passing rank should have been more of a promotion, B rank at least. I mean the guy beat an A rank noble.

Poor Rick, his date with Reanette was ruined.

That's what all this stupidity was about, 'Oh, I don't know how strong they are' 'I'm so weak' 'I'm so old' What was all this rubbish being poured into the eyes and ears of the audience? What was it for?
In Episode 4, we are clearly shown that he is aware of the adventurer's powers, and was even personally involved in the battle. He killed a dragon. He's got the mc-kun's secret superpower. And in the first three episodes, the author pissed all over the place. Why? So that what? The mc-kun doesn't realise his power? Because he was a clerk and he's in his 30s? Is that it? He trained with legends, he killed a dragon, an S-rank adventurer tells him he's smart and worthy, he's been in the guild for 14 years and knows all the norms and rules.... And then he drools for the first three episodes and it's like he's blind, dumb and deaf. Oh, they're young, I can't compete with them. Oh, the magician farted miserably with his skill and I broke the stand and the wall... 'The magician is so strong'. Is this the kind of pecking order for the old guys, showing that they can beat the young guys with a bit of training?
But most of all, I'm sickened by the fact that this stupidity of character development people still justifies dragging owls, dragons, adventurers, the whole guild, on the D of denial of logic and sense. And now another defender of stupidity will come along and say that it was impossible to do otherwise, and in fact it's not like that, it's all very logical, and the mc-kun's behaviour actually natural 10/10. Not like a degenerate.
On a separate note. In the fourth episode, mc-kun became a regular shounen hero. Like exemplary. And his behaviour normalised.
How did that happen? The author wrote the test arc at the beginning and then, a few weeks later, a justification, a revelation of why. Thinking about what the character knows, what he can do, how realistic he is, how logical... Why? People will swallow the bait!
I'm on fire.
