So, I was watching Full metal Panic :TSR the other day, and look what I found.
Stop at 2:34 and look very closely at the people on the screen.

Reminds you of some people doesn't it? Especially the guy on the bike.

If you find any more of these obscure references in other animes, feel free to post.

More of a Journey to the West reference than DBZ.

LOL! You have a long way to go if that reference impressed you that much to create a thread over it...

So GET OVER IT and, if you really like references of other animes, go watch Lucky Star or Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei for starters.

This has now become a rec thread.

I suggest watching Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and School Rumble next. And maybe Seitokai no Ichizon, for the most blatant references.

In Inuyasha episode 128, there are a LOT of cameos: Shinichi and Ran, Luffy, Shampoo, and a lot more that I couldn't name. (I wasn't sure if that was Konata in the middle, since you only see her back.)

Gintama has bits that parody Prince of Tennis, DBZ, Deathnote, and Naruto.
Well one thing I've learned from this experience, is that a princess is still a princesss even when she is naked.

HAHA, I totally missed that one, and I love the FMP series! That's a great find.

Also, anime references, to me, aren't as funny when the whole draw of the show is the fact that it references otaku culture in every other scene. Sure, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Lucky Star, and the like are funny, but I would MUCH rather have a random reference like this in a show that's NOT all about parodying other stuff.

Yeah, Gintama would be the best example for anime references in anime.

I would say almost every episode in Gintama does that. But there was another reference in FMP: Fumoffu during the onsen episode where Shinji goes into SEED mode trying to get past Sagara's security.

TTGL (ep6) has a cameo from the casts of various other gainax shows.

GaoGaiGar's J is also very similar to cyborg 009's 002- to the point that it simply has to be a reference.

Pretty much anything by SHAFT tends to love referencing other anime, films and games. Most noticeably Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and even moreso Pani Poni Dash. I noticed the SHAFT produced Negima! OVAs for the manga had a few cameos of the rabbit from Pani Poni Dash. Maria+Holic had a couple of references including SZS. Natsu no Arashi and Pani Poni Dash's OVA even had a few Touhou references in there.

Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid finished in 2005. Death Note started one year later. I think it's more of a coincidence rather than a reference.

Damn! That's what I get for being more of an anime watcher than a manga reader - ignorant dolt that I am. Oh, well...

That's an understatement. Gintama usually parodies multiple anime in every episode. I remember there was even a whole episode dedicated to parodying Bleach, and another that greatly parodied Death Note. Hell, episode 119 was pretty much the entirety of Dragon Ball Z condensed into 20 minutes. Also not forgetting to mention the scene that parodied Bleach, One Piece and Dragon Ball Z at the same time (click here).

I've noticed that in A LOT of different anime, there is often a reference to one anime which stands out to me the most; Lupin III.

Cowboy bebop's art work was admittedly based off Lupin III (special features on DVD box set and/or movie)

Another one is in FLCL (Episode 4 I believe) When Naota-kun's father is dressed as Lupin and Haruko is in her PJs/blankets, and the spring loaded vagina punch scene replayed as in the intro of Lupin III (Even grayed out as it did)

I find anime references to be sorta unfunny. It's like "Oh, there's a character from that show in my show, lol"! The only reference I found funny was in Megazone 23 where Lupin and Zenegata are in the cop car.
