@ForgotEyeWasHere I'm usually neutral on their subtitles, but the huge difference between their subtitles in different languages for the same show made me laugh out loud. |

Isn't it the lazy way of saying "We don't have the resource to monitor users" kind of thing? Basically the same thing happened with Current Events here on MAL except I can understand the pain the moderators had to go through. |

@Azuchi i say yes capitalism is maximizing profit while minimizing cost so it checks out but on mal part they do not have enough volunteer moderators |

It's pathetic, but understandable. It's textbook enshittification; grow big, charge more, offer less. After all, they made themselves clear that they want to save money on subtitles. It's not a leap to drop "non-essential" features like these. RobertBobert said: But why didn't they just temporarily ban reviews of this show or introduce pre-moderation for them? I suspect they've been wanting to get rid of reviews/comments for a while now. They have just determined that this was the best timing for it, after whatever internal discussion. It costs resources to keep these features running, not to mention moderate. We don't know how much, but the server costs and manpower are not zero. Not many streaming services have these features anyway, and Crunchyroll is a major player in the anime streaming industry (if not the major player), so they probably feel confident enough to make an "anti-consumer" decision like this out of the blue. Yes, there's some controversy online right now, and a small number of people might even unsubscribe, but the majority of users will simply realize that Crunchyroll now works the same as Netflix and keep on paying subscription. |

@rohan121 I assumed that Crunchroll was being too pushy in promoting this, but I doubt that any yuri they had would have gotten the same reaction. But it's funny that we suddenly remember that the community is predominantly male only when we want to blame the guys for something. @perseii So, they just tried to use it as good timing but underestimated people's reactions? |

This reminds me of back in the day when Myspace removed their live chatrooms due to them becoming way too toxic (it was one of the reasons I use to use Myspace back then was to live chat with random people when I was bored in my office with nothing better to do). The difference though is Myspace back then was actually considered a social media platform back then. Unlike Crunchyroll they are not typically a platform for Users to socialize. Crunchyroll will be fine with such a move. I never personally participated in their comments and reviews simply because I never thought there was much of a point. It reminded me of YouTube when I would often times see blocks and blocks of User comments trashing the content creators way back when, where eventually YouTube finally offered the options for Users to disable comments for their content if they wanted. Something like this would only be a bad move if Crunchyroll was a free to use platform again that didn't rely on paid subscriptions and other revenue that would suffer from disabling such a thing. Unlike YouTube that relies on bombarding Users these days with Ads to generate the revenue needed for such a platform to continue to operate. Likely less people would be spending time and participating on YouTube if their comment sections were completely removed. As for MAL, Users have likely nothing to worry about. If MAL suddenly removed their forums and review sections they would have to completely reform their entire platform to make such a bold move. I could only imagine this happening if MAL decided to move past being a social platform completely. Which I could only imagine being a bad idea simply looking at what happens to any real social platform that tries to become less social like Myspace did. |

I do see this as an unfortunate move. While I was never a huge participant in CR comments, I did like to scroll through them on occasion to see people's reactions to funny/dramatic moments. Though if I hadn't done so with Himote House ep 11, I wouldn't have been spoiled on the girls' shocking topic of bathtime conversation. Of course, since there was no notification function, there was never much actual discussion taking place for any non-newly-aired episode. No one was going to manually check their comments on something from 6 years ago for replies. I don't see why this kind of shutdown would extend to an unrelated database site like MAL. Although it is part of a broader trend (e.g. Salon, IMDB, Torrentfreak) of "destroying the grey zone" -- making content sites either entirely site-generated or entirely user-generated, for the sake of avoiding toxicity and the hassle of controlling it. Certainly, limiting damaging/embarrassing backlash could be part of the decision, though it's not like shutting down comments will stop criticism from taking place in other places where anime viewers will hear of it. But as the CBR article points out, the My Deer Friend subtitles seem like another case -- like Dragon Maid -- of "blaming CR for something they didn't actually do." |

Based on what I know about what reviews and comments are like on other platforms, I'm inclined to say nothing of value was lost. I never paid attention to any of that on there in the first place. It's an overreaction for sure when they could just find a better way to moderate that stuff, but I get why they did it. I don't fully agree, but I get it. The irony is the stuff they stream on their platform also has what some might call "harmful content", just not specifically targeted towards any individual like a comment from some asshole might be. @Nurguburu my guy, you realize that these pirate sites get their content directly from the legal sites these days, right? If they go, we go back to waiting for people to take the time to make fansubs. And I'm already doing that for things like uncensored blu-ray releases. I still remember when a fansub group refused to release episodes of I think it was Naruto for some dumb reason. |

@deg I think CR closed comments due translation with AI in an Anime, not for people bashing a BL (sadly anti-BL comments were always around and no one cares but its quite ironic mothers basement saying "such people have no effect on the Japanese market, where merch sales will continue to ensure more such content keep coming out every year, these people weren’t part of the anime community five years ago, they’re culture warrior tourists whose only real hobby is arguing on the internet" when he and some people literally do the same if the show is against their morals like Goblin Slayer, Redo of Healer, ecchi shows, etc lmao). |

@deg >mothers basement Honestly genre filters should've been a thing ages ago, though I don't agree with review bombing BL stuff either, it's just a low thing to do. It at least is clear about what it wants to do from the start unlike a lot of Western shows. Still no justification to abolish comments altogether. |

Guys, no. This is highly likely not the reason for takedown. The past couple of days CR caught flak because they were allegedly using AI subs for that deer anime. CR already talked about using AI for their subs in the future here: https://www.polygon.com/anime/24092569/crunchyroll-ai-subtitles-funimation-account-updates-interview
...and already got caught and taken down a bunch of comments and an episode for a different anime back in Fall 2023 for it here:https://nichegamer.com/crunchyroll-criticized-over-awful-subtitles-for-the-yuzuki-familys-four-sons/
They have been allegedly pulling this trick to their less popular shows for a while now. But now this deer anime, which became unexpectedly popular, didn't have good professional subs to go along with it. So it's speculated that the bad subs are a third party translation team CR hired on the spot that made these crappy translations. This negative attention caught up with a bunch of entertainment news sites here:https://www.cbr.com/my-deer-friend-nokotan-viral-subtitle-controversy/
This also created a disgruntled audience that voiced their opinion en masse in various comments sections. So instead of closing down just that one show's comment section like they had before, they shut down every comment section on the site.
The negative rating/comment-bombing on gay shows is order of magnitudes a smaller controversy. Bleeding paying customers because of cheap/AI translations are more likely to make CR pull the plug this quickly.

@foxsurprise The past couple of days It was release on Sunday and in less than 24h on Monday comments were already disabled. Would they really be able to react to a controversy in less than 1 working day? The decision seems weird to be made in just a few hours on Monday if it was just to stop one controversy, plus which company can even make significant decisions with no bureaucracy? |

This just makes me appreciate what the MAL devs still to this day go through with Ishinashi (and other situations like that) even more.
@anime-prime Ishinashi is one of the worst modern pests that MAL has had recently. I think it was a headache for the vast majority of users for obvious reasons. Leaving that aside... I think this will be an unpopular opinion, but I am in favor of this measure that Crunchyroll has taken (despite being extreme) This is the perfect example of what internet trolls can do to all the users of said platform (which was becoming increasingly filled with toxicity and trolls). I don't know what Crunchyroll's moderation will be like, but I imagine that, before said measure, , it must have been pretty mediocre. I took the liberty of looking for the reasons and, wow... I could only see internet trolls who constantly complained about subtitles (respectable to a point), but also people who complained about: "my waifu is better than this other one" or "this protagonist is a loser virgin." In the BL anime category everything is much worse. Basically, at Crunchyroll there is a problem 50 times worse than Ishinashi, like this: Although it is an extreme measure, if this measure serves to eradicate trolls similar to Ishinashi from any platform, I am extremely in favor. Freedom of expression is one thing, but these people abuse and subvert said expression for the worse (just like the pathetic excuse of "dark humor"). |

@ColourWheel Shit on CR is already on the net you probably got 1000 people who backed all the shit they had on CR. I mean if one badly want to see it. My issue is CR is allot like Netflixand Netlix is allot like record companies where they basically take all the cash for them self and give scraps to it´s creators. Another issue with them is their lies and bullshit. I don´t remember full details because it was a while ago. CR always said allot of the money they get is put back in to anime industry to help smaller studios. Yet this jack ass company decide instead they gonna blow the cash on their own shitty useless anime to show the world they can make a good anime only staring girls because men are trash and it shall always be more inclusive. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vdOGru_UW8 And lets not they started on the censor they done even changed sub because their hate of men. If people want to support CR fine support them but Im prefer to stay away from such evil shit. I will say I watch new anime in the not so cool way but I still support in buying DVD/and Blu-ray on anime I watched and liked and allot of different companies sells dvd. Back in the hay day I blow loads of money buying anime on VHS like ADV films and Manga Video. My collection is in storage but I still got around 1000 vhs and even loads of DVD´s and blu-ray I only got the most newer stuff in my apartment. Man still got my Copy of Venus wars, Love hina collection even my VHS of Robotech and Star zinger. CR is allot like Netflix they take something you like and shit on it and puke on it. And I rather support anime creators in other ways than giving them do a shitty streaming service that probably spend most of the money on crack and mushrooms. SO honestly I rather be called a filthy pirate than support a shitty company. what I would love to see is studios some how host it them self or get something that will be more beneficial for a studio. |

Well over a 2000+ retro Anime franchises on DVDs, VHS, VCD, Laserdiscs, etc... that I have collected over the past 3 decades in practically a magnetically sealed vault storage unit across town just to keep them decaying anymore than they have (this mostly deals with the VHS tapes). Ishinashi's spamming is annoying, but generally, whenever I receive a spam comment from him as a profile page wall post or in whichever form (which has tapered off in frequency dramatically recently; at least for me), I just briefly read it, shake my head and/or roll my eyes, maybe let out a quick chuckle if it's something so over the top extreme as to be funny, delete the comment if applicable, and just move on with my day, all in a matter of literal seconds. Therefore I've never seen the big deal, other than for volunteer mods themselves having to expend time chasing him. |

A lot of your gradiences I can understand but I don't completely agree with them all.
Dude you would probably shit your pants if you ever saw my entire collection of Anime on physical media. I have over hundreds of new Anime Blu-rays and DVDs I have yet to even still ever get around to consuming. @ColourWheel That sounds freaking awesome. Yeah I rather use physical media. I'm not even fan of spottily I still buys CD´s. Because as I said I got no trust in these middle hand companies and as you said your self one gotta pay 10-15 bucks to 2-4 different streaming services just to be able to watch what ever you want to watch. But yeah I rather support them buy important series or buying march and such rather than spending money on a sketchy third party company. |

@WatchTillTandava Do you even waste time deleting his messages? I'm not even touching them, which apparently makes him very angry and he keeps trying to get my attention, lmao. @Piromysl Well what surprises me is they never care about the people who use the apps to get it back. |

Woke platform. Everything they do is woke. Censorship and removal of "problematic" scenes in anime. Now they removed the comment section to "protect" the 1% of mentally ill snowflakes who might get "offended" by seeing words on their screen. What a clown world we live in.
@BigBoyAdvance It's been discussed to death that CR don't censor or remove scenes, and that censorship in general is made to appease the conservative snowflakes. Do your homework before you embarass yourself. |

Getting to post harmful content in the comments is most of the value of having a Crunchyroll account. |

I highly doubt MAL will remove the ability to discuss and review the show. This doesn't seem like a trend, not to mention the not-so-positive fan reaction to Crunchroll's decisions. I don't know much to say about this since I haven't commented on there for a long time. But to be honest, the wording surprises me. As if we are not talking about an anime site, but about some kind of news portal.
@RobertBobert MAL has already done that before. They removed comments under people and the such. |

Not even reviews? This sounds like a nice excuse for layoffs. Reminds me of when MAL turned off comments on people's pages, but at least I can understand that a bit more. |

@0063873192871 I know. But removing the ability to comment on one type of page because of shitposters and closing comments altogether are two different things. |
