They translate from English to French, which is also translated by AI. Fortunately, in France, we have another streaming service, ADN, which streams this anime with translation MADE BY HUMAN. I watched the episode on ADN, so I can not confirm, but, apparently, there is no translator credited in the Prunchyfraud version. Not crediting translators is illegal in France. Therefore, there is no doubt they used AI. https://x.com/oecuf0/status/1809976150774382818 https://x.com/DeformerLua/status/1809971193400692814 Here are examples in the German & English sub: PS: In case you didn't understand that I was talking about Crunchyroll : we love giving slander names to whatever or whoever we don't appreciate in the French Twitter community. We often call this company:

So? I wouldn't mind, as long as it's doing the job well. Some day it probably will. I speak german and these subs are fine. Trash them, but they're trying here. What do you want them to do? Hire a translator for EVERY LANGUAGE, and that for every new Anime that comes out? Always? While the majority of people is stealing the stuff anyways? AI is, at least, opening the possbility to do that, as a streaming company. It's just not that perfect, yet. Put on your big boy pants and watch english subs, like the rest of us. Problem solved. @Merve2Love «As long as it's doing the job well» ?????????? Did you see the images I linked ? Even if most German are fluent in English, does it mean they can mix two languages in the subtitles?????????? I also did not link screenshots in French, since people might not be able to read, but the translation is HORRIBLE. The sentences in the French translation is nonsense. Insult me a «d*ck» if you want to, it doesn't alter the fact that their AI is not working and the French and the German communities are sick and tired of everything this company does, such as:

- not paying the translators
- informing their subscribers in the last minute that their pricing is increasing
- using a dark pattern in the unsubscribe page to make the user to feel culpability if they want to leave
- firing a US dub actor because he is a member of a union which goal is to improve the work condition for dub actors (Kyle McCarley)
- firing a French dub actress because she did a fan dub of a CSM trailer (Anna Lauzeray-Gishi)
- lying by saying they contribute to the anime industry, but actually, they are not often in the production committees
- merging with the brand Kaze in Europe to force the manga buyers to order the new book jackets, which is a real ecology issue
- etc
Shall I continue to list all the bad work from Crunchyroll? Do you need me to link sources?
@KamenSentai Yes, I saw. The german looks fine. As I said: Give it time. What are you trashing them for? My dude they CANT pay a translator for every language thats out there. Good, they go and hire a french one but then the next guy comes on here, complaining that he wants to watch in his native language, but the subs suck. You know what I mean? They cant. They wont. They're trying. Has nothing to do with "not giving credit" AI could bring a lot of people to watching Anime, ones the technology is ready. It would solve that problem for you. How can you trash that^^ Who promised you that everything will be available and convenient ALL THE TIME, exactly how YOU want it??? That seems entitled to me. |

The Subs were not handle by Crunchyroll but given by Remow the JP licensor. Even though sometime Crunchyroll can be at fault, this time they are not responsible. They might get there own subs latter on like they did with "Yuzuki Family's Four Sons" where Remow also gave them bad subs that they change couples days later. |

@Merve2Love You defend the use of AI, fine. In France, we have been watching anime and reading manga since the 70s. We are really attached to our beloved voice actors and actress, and we appreciate very much the translators who are able to justify that translation is an art, not an assembly line work. Will the AI be able to make puns? Local jokes? (Indeed, local jokes. We were so satisfied to read that by a human translator when we saw one in a CSM episode.) No one is denying the use of AI in the future. They can come back with the perfect AI later if they want to, but people currently don't want to pay to read nonsense sentences. You want non-native English speakers to watch anime in English? Fine, fan sub pirated content will be back. Don't forget that the anime industry became popular when there was no legal streaming service, legal services then came to translate in all languages. The fans pay legal services to support people who work on the service to translate for THEIR language, and if they don't, I dare you bet whether fan subs will be back or not. They want to offer their service in France? OF COURSE, they have to hire a French translator. They want to offer their service in Italy? OF COURSE, they have to hire an Italian translator. They want to offer their service in Germany? OF COURSE, they have to hire a German translator. They want to offer their service in Spain? OF COURSE, they have to hire a Spanish translator. They want to offer their service in the Netherlands? OF COURSE, they have to hire a Dutch translator. They are a multinational company. If they can't offer anything that satisfies a local market, they should leave and the people will do the work themselves. I am ok if your viewpoint is positive about the future of AI, but suggesting me to stop reading in my language is totally disrespectful. You can debate on different opinion, but, don't you ever insult something that defines my identity. The English sub is so irritating since they keep using suffixes "-kun", "-chan", "-senpai", and so on, instead of translating these. French community will keep trash talking on this orange company until they stop disrespecting their customers who pay for their bad quality streaming and manga content. I am not going to discuss any longer. There are a lot of points to add, but, I am pretty sure we are not going to agree. |

@KyokoxChama I noticed the lack of capitalization as well, but I still think there's some human influence in the subs tho. An AI wouldn't know to use "nroh" in the sound Nototan makes. And at one point there was a "my left buttcheek" line from Torako.. that can't be AI |
Jul 8, 7:10 AM

On the German example, AI wouldn't make observations like that. Rather it's human written, but probably as a note for dubbing (instead of subbing) This paragraph doesn't make sense and can be removed seems more than what AI could muster for a translation. AI wouldn't both translate something and also decide that the translation it made didn't make sense. |

Looking at what's essentially a missplaced tl-note and saying "it's AI" is probably one of the funniest comments I've seem as far as localization discussions go, have you ever seem mtl adding notes like that? That being said we can spend months complaining on Twitter that Crunchyroll (the company known for bad subs) is giving us bad subs or we can stop paying for streaming services. The norm with Netflix and other services used to be non-English movies and series getting subbed into English and every other sub a translation of that, for some reason Crunchyroll doesn't seem to do that consistently, in fact some series (such as DeDeDeDe) have worse English subs than other languages, but then they look at a series that is getting multidub in various languages and decide to use AI? I do not wish to play devil's advocate but why would they bother subbing series that likely won't see a dub for at least a year but then use AI in Shikanoko which is getting dubbed episodes on-release? edit: I'd lost the link earlier but came accross it again, here's a thread explaining how it could not be MTL: https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/1dy6mi6/why_the_official_subs_for_my_deer_friend/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button tl;dr rush-job and/or incompetence and/or lack of editors/proofreaders as opposed to MTL. |

I'm blaming CR higher ups who have authority to make decisions are willing to release shit product because they are either too lazy or too greedy to hire someone who get the job done properly. Some anime producers will be very picky about how their anime is released overseas, just look at what happened with NGE. It's very possible that the anime producers contracted this JP company to translate their show, and then gave that translation to CR. Bro, that's not really a hill to die on. They had decision-making authority, they decided to release this garbage. When a company has basically a monopoly in the field, with only a scarce competition, then they feel entitled to pull off stunt like this. Trying to imply that they somehow were forced to do this and fell sorry for disappointing their fans is straight up delusional. |

AI is being used because the translating industry in anime and manga is filled to the brim with bad actors, get used to it, because said bad actors wouldn't stop mucking up the translations. |

The episode I watched earlier was AI translated to English and it wasn't bad. It's about time AI can understand a simple language like Japanese. Now hopefully they apply it to long VN games that take decades to translate. |

This is fucking horrible. I have previously made a thread about bad AI manga translations on the main anime discussion forum and will repeat my stance: AI should not replace humans in a field like language translation as MTL is fucking horrible quality, prone to mistakes that humans wouldn't make, and often makes a stiffer translation that doesn't flow as naturally. These greedy corporations have the money to actually pay real translators but instead we get this trash. Professional translators are one of the most important jobs when bringing over foreign media to different countries and this community treats them like absolute dogshit and with so many idiots wanting them to "be replaced by AI", here you fucking go. Here's the dogshit quality you get. Happy? Instead of a high-quality translation made by humans who have studied the Japanese language for years, we get a literally unwatchable level of quality made by some machine that can barely understand anything and just regurgitates what has been put into it leading to low quality slop. Generative AI is a cancer on both creative industries and the translation industry and its about time that translators unionize to stop companies from being allowed to do this shit. We also need to not watch this show through official means in order to hurt Crunchyroll and show them that using Generative AI to translate shows is not ok, so pirating the show is probably one of the best things you can do if you want to still watch it. DON'T SETTLE FOR LOW QUALITY AI SLOP, FIGHT FOR BETTER CONDITIONS FOR TRANSLATORS |

@DigitalApe Japanese is not a simple language at all. Iti s genuinely one of the more complex one, is very context sensitive, has a lot of Kanji with different readings depending on how it is used, has various nuances in first person pronouns that are used, and has a very distinct difference between casual and formal speech. AI has also shown genuine struggles understanding some of these things as shown with the Ablaze Manga translation of the manga "Jinba" which has a lot of grammar errors, characters having their names be butchered by an AI that doesn't understand the kanji it is reading, and just a complete lack of contextual awareness. Context is something that AI does not understand and is fundamentally important to the Japanese language, therefore it will cause a lot of issues if Machine Learning is used to translate instead of allowing a human who has studied for years to manually translate a work using their extensive knowledge of the langauge. |

Just one of the many reasons not to give money to Crunchyroll. They are not interested in making product, but making money.
@Piromysl My man just discovered that companies need money to continue operating. |
Decide once every certain number of years which members of the ruling class will oppress and crush the people in parliament: this is the true essence of bourgeois parliamentarism, not only in the constitutional parliamentary monarchies but in the most democratic republics - The State and Revolution (September 1917), Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov "Lenin". |
