For myself, I used to like watching anime but find the idea of saying I like anime uninteresting now. Once everyone likes it, it no longer feels special like it used too. There was a time when liking anime was not cool, but now it seems like a quirk or personality rather than something someone likes. It's akin to the affect films like The Avengers had on nerd culture. It made nerd culture cool. Which ruined what nerd culture stood for or what it was, a more quiet community. Or hippies. Once hippies became popular, no one wanted to be it. "You Either Die A Hero, Or You Live Long Enough To See Yourself Become The Villain" - The Dark Knight Thanks to the internet, personality and groups feel lost. What was outcasted is the main thing and the next minute it's uninteresting and someone finds the next hidden culture and brings it to the mainstream. I feel what being a anime fan is lost. Anime also just feels so overmarketed. it used to feel like this thing that united people but now seems like a product or another thing rather than this community of people loving this specific thing. Individuality feels lost. Idk why but when I hear someone likes anime, I cringe since I used to do the same thing. When I used to say it, I thought it was cool in an uncool sense. But now I feel like "Ok, so does everyone else". And it hits hard. It's like being like everyone else. I remember seeing one of those fake story videos recently where a girl wasn't popular because she liked anime. In my eyes, the people who don't like anime now I see are the ones not popular and everyone likes it so that doesn't reign in anymore. And it makes me dislike anime since it feels fake and wrong to? Like I'm following a system rather than making my own path. To make my own path feels taken away and replaced with nothing. Maybe there is no path, and is that okay to live your life without feeling in a box, feeling organized and just feeling like existing is alright in this world. Idk, really. Is it just me?

Sounds more like a hipster culture than a nerd culture Why would you care if more people like anime? Why would you want less people to like anime? That doesn't make any sense lol. It makes it sound like you don't actually like anime, you just wanted a hobby that came off as niche and gave you an identity. As for "Anime is cringe", I think its more just about the people associated with anime. I'm a weeb who watches and reads a lot of degenerate shit, but I never bring it up unless I'm talking to someone who is also into degenerate anime/manga. Some people just have no social awareness and do a lot of weird stuff in public, then people who aren't into anime see it and assume "Oh, that is how all anime watchers act". You can type in "anime cringe compilation" on YouTube, Reddit, Tik Tok, whatever and you'll get endless videos of weird anime people. I personally don't really care what people do. If you aren't hurting anyone, I don't see the big deal. However, others will cringe at anything someone does.

@Blackfire2340 Good points, thanks for the response. I don't see it that way. I see it as a sub-culture I was into and it becoming over-saturated. Like let's say your into something that you get made fun of of for liking and one day the people making fun of you like it and to not like it you will get made fun of. It's weird. Can't express it. I think everyone struggles to find a place they belong I think when i was getting into it I was trying to find myself and used anime to open myself up to different genres and works I haddent seen. (It's similar to, but not the same, as if you like something and then your parents like it. Then you don't. It's just a thing.) I recommend Sarah Z's video on the topic to you if your interested as she captures some of my points and is one of the people to help me feel like I wasn't the only one feeling this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vWJE8k-Meo

It depends on the anime really. Liking isekai and ecchi anime nowadays is very cringe imo, though it’s subjective. But nothing cringe about watching something like “boy and the heron” I don’t see why people can’t just say “I like to watch some anime” say way as people say that they like to watch some movies.

These days it's more of a "liking only the 5 big bad shounens" is kinda cringe. which is weird because they are probably the bigger group, but also, pretty much all the rest of us look down on the people who argue for hours over which mainstream shounen is peak and which one is mid.

@Blackfire2340 lack of social awareness... that reminds me of the time two guys working at a cinema were blatantly talking about hentai between serving customers. I think sometimes people talk about stuff like that because they think no-one else will know what it means. (and to be fair, in a rural town probably few would.) Of course they both looked like they were gonna wither away and die before my very eyes when my mother in her 50's at the time said... "I know what that is" lmao

I think the word "cringe" is so overused it's lost all meaning, so in a way I guess my answer is no. Also, If you've lost interest in something because it no longer feels "special" to like that thing, did you really even like it in the first place? Or was is just a thing you did to feel unique? Just tossing that out there.

Depends who are you talking about. Watching anime ITSELF is not cringe. But ppl who watch anime are often cringe AF. There are ppl who have obssesion about Japan, starts talking in Japanese and similiar stuff - so weebs = cringe. There are people who have "waifus" and "husbandos" = cringe. There are people who see in anime real world and characters. Like they are triggered because of rape scene in Goblin Slayer. Like why ? Nobody suffers (because cartoon characters are not real so they can't suffer) so calm down. Those people are disturbing and cringe. There are ppl who see what they wants to see. And while it's okay, but trying to convince others to your dellusions is not. The best example would be "Kino no Tabi". MC is just normal girl who travels disguised as a guy BECAUSE IT'S SAFER this way. What cringe people see ? Transgender character or at least agender (or any other type of apache-helicopter) - no, she is normal. Those people are cringe and turbo disturbing. So as I said - watching anime itself is perfectly normal thing. There are just ppl who decided to connect completly normal thing with some level of (negative) craziness.

Just watch anime with a proper mind. Like only to have fun and don't go into something like weeb. Just enjoy your anime and move on that's the most normal thing you can do. Just ignore all those people who call anime cringe. And those who make some cringe weird content in the name of anime. Not everyone though, some are very good who make it nice and fun to watch. And remember just watch it like another form of entertainment and don't take it personally. Also if you love one anime and other people make fun of that, just ignore them. And move on and enjoy your time in it. Don't make yourself annoyed just because of that. yeah, there are so many things that is annoying or cringe but if you just ignore that, then everything will be fine as it is. People will change and also anime fans are growing like crazy which also make different opinions and point of views so it's quite normal to be annoyed by it.There are many kinda of fan who like their way of genre liking. For example some like action or drama, where else some other love magical girl or idol. So it's not a problem. Just be calm and enjoy life as it goes and also enjoy your anime. That's what really matters at the end. Nowadays also the calling of "watching anime is cringe" has reduced significantly. So it's also a good thing for those straight minded fans. Also there are so many good and cool animes are yet to be made and will be enjoyed by all of us.
I need somebody who can love me at my worst No, I'm not perfect, but I hope you see my worth 'Cause it's only you, nobody new, I put you first And for you, girl, I swear I'll do the worst If you stay forever, let me hold your hand I can fill those places in your heart no else can Let me show you love, oh, I don't pretend, yeah I'll be right here, baby, you know I'll sink or swim

I don't understand why you prefer anime when it wasn't as popular overseas as it is currently. 10 years ago where I live, you would get called out, mocked the shit out of, and bullied for even mentioning you like anime. Nowadays people don't make fun of you (at least way less now) and are more accepting to the idea of anime itself. One thing I always preach is that no matter how bad anime fans are, sports fans (especially football/soccer fans) are always one level worse.

I don't think that ever held weight to begin with. What you actually are witnessing is corporate capitalist appropriation of anime otaku culture and the internet just trying to make more profit without considering the communities that helped make such things possible. It is fine to be more popular but not how the centralization and corporatization of the internet and shift to a gig economy has done to ruin all communities by mixing everyone together where there is no separation between otaku and people that hate anime for what it is. Everything is being homogenized where there isnt much difference between one person and the next so it really mutes any personality. You even see people just sounding exactly same using same meme phrases as their only way of communicating. People are less and less people now and more becoming products.

@traed Interesting take, thanks for sharing. Like how you phrased how it seems like we are becoming products now. Curious to see how time holds up to basic living in a century and if the idea of us being products is the norm. That could cause a opposite effect where everything gets torn down and reproduced to repeat history. Like we must take ourselves down as to repeat history for the better. In a way, killing the past is actually saving it from the future.

That's a really weird take. I'll try to elaborate the best I'm willing to right now because I don't feel like giving this awkward post a solid answer, but you DO kinda seem like you want to learn whether your mindset is normal or not. To sum it up, that's an elitist or gatekeeping way of thought, which are very negative views. "I like something because not a lot of people like it or know about it". Something small becoming mainstream brings a lot more positive points than negative. If your hobby is more open to the world and gaining more attention, you should be happy, since it means it's being recognized worldwide. And, animes haven't been compromised, they still retain their japanese humor, japanese culture of making stuff. The quality of the old animes were horrendous compared to today ( very few expections ), they had waaaay less money to work with and were very close minded. I love animes since my teenage years. I'm loving that you can talk to more people about it and having a conversation. I love that my #1 hobby is being accepted and appraised worldwide. I love the amount of junk and god quality animations is being produced. It seems to me you only watched anime because it was an unknown hobby. That's all thanks to anime slowly being introduced to mainstream media. Anime wasn't mainstream because it was an "unknown culture", in fact, everyone knew about anime, but the west controlled what became popular or not. Now that actually good stuff is being brought up, animes got the attention they deserved, another example is korean media. Also, I can guarantee that even before, liking anime being cringy was something "MOSTLY" common among teenagers. Almost no adult would be turned off by someone who watched anime even 10 years ago. And no, most people still don't watch anime. If they do, they only know shows like AoT, HxH, Naruto, One Piece, Death note.

@ucadeluca Interesting take. I disagree with it personally but like your perspective in the sense of how much work you put into it. I see anime's change as an old man would reflecting on how society has changed and grown and how technology has advanced and feeling left behind in a world that feels 10x bigger and now this old man is spent yearning for the past when things seemed simpler. I feel to Anime like I feel to growing. It's a change, a scary one, in a big world now, but maybe it's not so bad. But I don't know. It's a change in times for better or for worse. I see your reply here as saying it's bad to feel these thoughts and their elitest but I disagree. I see it as someone wishing for simpler times when things were smaller and felt more human and connected and less toxic as thanks to anime growing, toxicity has become more common and fandoms have greatly changed. While I personally disagree with your take, I appreciate how much effort you put into it. There's this interesting video on fandom by Sarah Z that covers some of my viewpoints and is worth a watch (recommended it before on this thread if you see it): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vWJE8k-Meo

I've had people tell me I'm 'cringe' for talking about anime and others be very interested and want to get into it. I prefer the latter because I think curious, open-minded people learn more and also have more fun. I don't see the point in trashing on something someone else likes provided it's not hurting anyone. I also agree with the poster who stated that 'cringe' is overused and probably, at this point, used as a way to bash someone or something about anything. I understand opening the discussion as you're being curious about modern society/varying generations and technology impacting your relationship to anime. Just a reminder to not let anyone bother you for enjoying what you enjoy. I find it helpful to go into the 'roots' of a thing or idea. ie. Go to retro anime and sludge off some of the flashier new stuff just for a change in perspective, potentially reignite a passion and 'make your own path'. Or, alternatively, try different genres you wouldn't normally watch. It's also okay to take a break and explore other hobbies or ventures. You don't hear a lot of people talking about reading literature for example (although you'll sure get that one person saying it's 'cringe' regardless). Either way, like what you like and you will find the right place you feel belonging.

If it makes you feel any better, I mentioned my affinity for anime to a coworker recently and he looked bothered. Anime being a "cringe" hobby rather than a "normie" one is alive and well!

Anime is a medium. Liking anime is like liking music. There is nothing special about it.
@delirific BINGO. Because anime is a medium, like music, dancing, sports, racing, etc... it will only ever become more accepted over time and will continue to grow in popularity and in volume, (and need I mention cartoons have been in existence since before WWII). Much like any other medium, it starts slow until it begins to gain traction and finally the acceleration in popularity allows for a BETTER experience. Remember how MMA was like mostly illegal underground fight clubs until it gained popularity enough to become an official, legally viewable sport? Anime was counterculture in the west until companies like Crunchyroll, Funimation and HiDive came along. The fact that OP dislikes when something they liked became popular is in itself, cringey (yes, with a y, because the word cringe is stupid and grammatically foul). @Elitar Hold up... There are people who got upset because of Kino no Tabi's androgynously stylized gender!? Whaaaat thee fuuuuck? That is insane. I think people today TRY to find shit to complain about because they hate themselves. That is one of the chillest, most serene and anxiety reducing anime I have ever seen.

I think liking anime is only cringe if it's your whole personality. Other than that, Ive been a "nerd" for 30 years now, only to see all my nerd interests become pop culture... and now im a hipster. There is no way to win lol.

@alexw1020 Interesting. I think in some places it is seen as cringe but in others as popular culture. I think also the cringe is a reaction from the popularity of anime and manga like when hippie culture got popular and people would say their not hippies as if it was a personal attack. Anime could be that soon. Interesting.

I see nothing cringe about liking anime. If it's your whole personality or only hobby? Cool. If you collect figures, merch, etc. and totally turn your room into an otaku's paradise? Cool, it's your room. You wanna gush about anime? Cool, but tone it down. Anime and the culture that comes with it is just another hobby in the end, and anyone who thinks anime fans are somehow different from shoe collectors, hardcore sports fans, hardcore fans of specific musicians, etc. are "cringe." Like an hobby you love, just learn how much to talk about in front of others unless you're close enough and you trust them enough to go weebshit on them. Of course, as I'm beginning to mellow out kind of I do realize that there are some anime and anime adjacent fans who take things too far (being nitpicky about literally everything, Japan is a utopia, etc.), but that doesn't change my love and interest in neither anime nor Japan. It does get frustrating to see people talk completely out of their ass when they decide to really hate on anime, and it shows that anime (particularly anything outside of what's considered "safe") still has a long way to go before it's accepted or mainstream, but at the end of the day I just block and move on, or if it's real life just put up with it until I can leave.

I'm glad most of us in the responses had similar views. At the end of the day - who cares? Enjoy what you're going to enjoy. Personally I like that it's easier than ever to strike up a conversation about anime IRL. Connecting with others' interest-wise is a great way to socialize. Sure, we probably don't have the same tastes, but whatever. Dunno why you wouldn't be glad to share interests with people. Unless you're worried about being special, or unique, or something. It's important to be special to yourself, not others.

@mokkocchi How do you determine cringe and how do you determine anime? I see cringe as the spectrum of delusion usually and feel alot of that energy everywhere so not suprsing the anime community a bit uncool but like why not embrace?

@mokkocchi To live, embrace the values that connect with you rather than hiding them saying that about people wanting to show their love of anime and hiding it for the cringe. Embrace it with love and vibes and all that and MILKSHAKES OMG MILKSHAKES

@mokkocchi But why hide who you are. Let people and yourself be cringe if you feel free.

@mokkocchi No, I'm saying be who you are no matter what. If that's cringe, then let it be cringe. We are all cringe in a way so how could it matter. Take that back, it does when it's really annoying or prentious but otherwise it's alright if its like normal cringe where you cna tolerate it like a drug or something. Also, do you know how to make a MILKSHAKE without milk or a shaker? (Needing milkshake rn low key)
