Which anime/manga series had you in the first half and then lost you in the second half?

Off the top of my head, "20th Century Boys" and "Jojolion" had me invested when I first started them, but by the time I finished those series, they had lost steam for me and I wasn't as enthusiastic of a reader, which somehow feels worse to me than if I had not liked a series from the beginning and continued not liking it.

In terms of anime series, "Ranking of Kings" had a promising start and then I finished it not caring for it at all and am not going to bother watching more of it. (To a lesser degree, I guess "Wonder Egg Priority" would count. Not that I was super into the series in the first place, but I thought I would at least finish it liking it more than I didn't.)

EDIT: I predict that "Bunny Drop" will be mentioned elsewhere in this thread at some point.

2ND EDIT: Have been thinking about this topic more and other examples came to my mind:

  • "Ghost Hound" - This one had a very strong start that had me hooked, but then it started heading off in directions that had me continuously feeling more and more underwhelmed.
  • "Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom"
  • "Mashle" - It was a fun enough watch in the first half. I was under the impression that this series would be more episodic covering different scenarios about Mash in the magic school, but then an arc started with some antagonists that felt unnecessary and could've happened later on in the story. Also, that arc was just typical shounen fare.

3RD EDIT: God damn. How could I forget about JJK????? It's one of the series that had me thinking about this topic in the first place. I liked it well enough up until a certain arc and then I kept trying to hang on afterwards before taking a break from reading it, and now what I've been hearing about the developments in the story has me wondering if I should even bother to finish it at all.

Hmmmm will go with stuff which I have recently finished [this year] and by pointing them here it doesn't mean they are bad, they just felt worse for me in the 2nd half:
Hell's Paradise, Dead mount dead play [the "2nd" part arrived very quickly], skip to loafer, my home hero, ningen fushi, blue lock, kaina, revenger,

That's all what I can think of right now.

Ousama ranking is a big one

thete is AOT S4 P2, magia record season 2 if we allow singular seasons.

there is to your eternity, but i was slowly loosing interest even in the first half.

the second half (the island arc) actually killed the show for me though. even with how great the last episode was i have still yet to watch s2.

The first one that came to my mind was SAO. The first half is enjoyable, but it just goes downhill during the 2nd half.
The second season has the same pattern, but it's been made even worse than during the first season.

AOT was fun until season 3 but then I lost interest in it.
JoJolion too as you said, although that was more because there was a 2 year gap as I picked it up again and by that time I had forgotten most of it.
Hell Girl was fun at beginning, horrible in the middle, amazing at the end.

Naruto (that long filler hell that lasted like 60-70 episodes or so at the end of the series).
Naruto Shippuden started off well then fell apart after the Pain arc.

Ousama Ranking, Wonder Egg Priority, Kado: The Right Answer, Shangri-La, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, Great Pretender, The Day I Became a God, Charlotte... Too many of those. Granted, some are better than others, I still think most of those shows are okay in spite of their second halves, but stuff like Kado, Charlotte, The Day I Became a God and Shangri-La really devolve into trainwrecks as they go on.
Who are you and why do you show your hostility towards a complete stranger whom you've not once spoken with before. Are you seriously asking to get blocked? Well, if that's what your intent is; to tempt me into throwing hands with someone as lowly and insignificant as you, then i may grant your wish provided you articulate yourself a bit better when trying to spite a person of my wavelength.

Shigofumi. It dropped the ball after Episode 6 when it elevated some of the blandest high school students I've seen in my time to main character status. At this point, the story itself also stopped focusing on its strong premise, which was Fumika delivering the letters from the dead to unhinged people.

Vision of Escaflowne.
There was a point around episode 10 where I thought to myself, if this show keeps things at this level it's going to be a 10/10 for sure. Then the second half of the show was chocked full of dues ex machina and just plain weird decisions from the writing team. Still had amazing fights and character moments, but it dropped the show as a whole to 8/10 for me.

The Megumin anime, I thought it would atleast be funny like the main series, but it wasn't. 1st and 2nd episode were alright, then went into world building and "look how much development she got" in a series that you honestly don't care if the world or characters are well written or fleshed out.

JoJolion was fun tho... (Yes, I'm JoJolion fan)

Anyway Death Note quite obvious. I don't dislike it. I still had fun but there's significant drop in enjoyment compare to first half. SnK s4 p2, thinking back, yea it quite sucks compare to first half which is great. Fumetsu no Anata e was good but man.. it really got very boring. Especially the island arc. I do watch 1ep of s2 and yea still doesn't hit the same.

OPM, I enjoyed the 1st season as it had something about it, then they changed studios and it tuned into a typical battle shonen which is fucking stupid when you consider the premise of the show. I wasn't alone in noticing the massive drop off in quality.

My Hero Academia - loved the second and third season, fourth season onwards got boring
Bungou Stray Dogs - still somewhat of an entertaining watch but ever since S4 the constant death fakeouts have gotten annoying
Ousama Ranking - had so much potential, but lost my interest after MC became OP
Food Wars - liked it up until the third season then everything started to feel repetitive
Summertime Render - liked it up until ep 15 then the nonstop fighting bored me
The Promised Neverland - well obviously S2 sucked compared to S1 but also for the manga, it turned dumb after the Goldy Pond arc
Fruits Basket - I love S2, but the final season was a disappointment
To Your Eternity - got boring after Gugu's arc

For me it was:
Alice in borderland (I a bit got lost in the lore and all cards meaning, so I gave up)
Death Note (even if I would die to this, kinda second part didn't make sense to me, yet it could've been only me)
Tokyo Ghoul (another series I really like, yet in the anime, I think it got really speed up and missed some stuff from the manga...)
Oyasumi Punpun aka Goodnight Punpun (it got a bit too much dark... still gonna give read it again in physical copy, so my opinion might change)
Suzume (I only remember the chair tbh, the idea was interesting, yet chair it's chair)

I liked the first season, but not the sequels.
Some shows already mentioned:

Wonder Egg Priority - How a show can have an 11/10 first episode and then just completely waste it...

Quintessential Quintuplets - I liked the first season since I thought it was an enjoyable harem comedy. I did not like the direction of season 2 and the movie where it relied very awkwardly on its concept of trying to build parasocial relationships between the girls and the viewer.

Attack On Titan - I disliked the direction this story took after season 1 - my favorite part of it all was the mystery and the horror. Although I still enjoyed it, once all those questions were answered it felt like Isayama didn't know where to take the story.

-Rebuild of Evangelion/Diebuster - I felt like these reimaginings had a lot of potential to do their own thing, and in some ways they succeeded, but they both copped out by the end and just recreated the same self-indulgent weirdness from the end of NGE.

Some things not mentioned yet:

Bunny Girl Senpai - Well I guess with season 2 coming, I may have to revise this opinion later. But for now, I liked everything in this story a little less after the opening arc. It almost felt like the big conclusion happened way too early and the rest of the story just got tacked on after that.

My Life As A Villainess - Season 1 was popcorn fun, season 2 was just a cash grab

Nisekoi - As soon as I watched the first minute of season 2, I realized that what I liked so much about this series wasn't the series itself, but Akiyuki Shinbou's direction

Flip Flappers - I thought this was a 9 or a 10 up until its sloppily rushed ending. We can only hope one day there is a tell-all interview where it's revealed why the main writer just left after epusode 7 or 8, since it coincides directly with its drop in quality

Mushoku Tensei - I liked the beginning of this show where it felt like it leaned into its unique concept a lot more, but after Rudeus & Friends left on their adventure, I lost interest in the story because it just turned into a generic fantasy adventure tale

Assassination Classroom - Really, really fun concept with good execution, though the wheels started to fall off a little bit even in season 1. By season 2, it was apparent the author was stretching the content with lots of filler. I also was not a fan of the change for the melodramatic, either.

The Promised Neverland - Haha, lol, lmao even

Same here with ranking of kings (though there were few moments —can be counted on single hand— which were good).

Aot s04 p2... Though the ending made up for it, but that second half was necessary, the direction it went was good but could have been done better, well there r lot of moments/parts which could have been done better. These remind me that Aot is isayama's first manga.

Death note (last 1/3rd part).

@DigiCat Surprisingly, "Bunny Drop" hasn't been brought up aside from our mentions of it, but I'm thinking that might have to do with this thread being responded to by newer anime fans who aren't familiar with that series.

@Tropisch This. I was very disappointed with the Megumin spin off I didn't even watch half of the show. I guess Kazuma and the rest of his party really are carrying the show.

Unfortunately, Demon Slayer manga... I don't even consider myself a fan of the series anymore, I became so disillusioned. It's not a case of hating the series now, I'm just... apathetic. It's a real shame because the art is gorgeous and the character designs are wonderful. But I couldn't stand the final arcs.

Deadman Wonderland is my most notable one I think, I disliked the way it handled the second half so much I went to buy the manga physically, as it was still being published.
Another obvious one would be Attack on Titan, with the horrible pacing of the first season especially, everything in the second cour just feels a little off.
