Should you feel guilty for what happens in your dreams?

@spaceslut this thread was inspired by your hybristophilia thread that just popped up again.

A few nights ago, I had a dream of Jeffrey Dahmer. I dreamt that he was very charming, flirting with me in a bar, and I decided to follow him home and sleep with him (he wasn't gay in the dream).
...Then he did turn out to be a murderer, but I joined forces with two other girls he had trapped in his basement. We managed to get him arrested by the French police after tricking him into thinking we were still oblivious to his criminal intent and after suggesting to take a trip to Paris together.

Now when I saw spaceslut's thread pop up, I couldn't help but remember that dream and feel guilty about being lured into his trap.
...
But should I?

Nobody can control what happens in their dreams, obviously. But I sometimes have dreams that I wake up guilty from. Does that ever happen to you guys?
And how do you shake the guilt off? Or maybe you don't, and tell yourself it's your own fault for having these subconscious thoughts?

THOUGHTS??!
If life ain't just a joke
Then why are we laughing?

If life ain't just a joke
Then why am I dead?

That would depend on the dream and the person having it and for what reason. Dreams reflect the subconscious mind but it's not always at face value, often isnt. It could reflect a fear or a desire in a person or just some sort of problem solving thought experiment.

Not completely true, though. Lucid dreaming is a real thing and the 5 times or so i pulled it off i could change some significant stuff (though something like changing location seems still really random).

As for the actual topic: No. I view it the same as fiction. What happens there, stays there.

I probably shouldn't feel guilty, because I can't control what happens, but I still do a little because I seem to dream about playing with women's underwear pretty often.

Sometimes I have dreams that I do feel guilty about and sometimes I take it as an opportunity for self-introspection.. but I've also come to realize that sometimes, dreams aren't really what they seem to be, or sometimes we forget bits and pieces from dreams and we cannot really be sure of what we saw or believed in dreams (sometimes).. so I just let it be. I love all my dreams though, and try to take them for what they are or how I remember them. I feel grateful for most of my dreams..

@Illuminatli

Why would you feel guilty?

If I have similar dream where I meet Eva Green or nanao and they turned out to be sadistic serial killer and have fuck pigs (heavenly delusion reference) chained up in the basement to slaughter later,i would just clean up their crime scene like and give them a perfect alibi (my home hero)..
Should be easy enough..

Murder, beautiful sadistic women...
Sweet dreams are made of these.. That's a movie I wanna see over and over again

No, but I can promise you that others will be mad at you for what you did in theirs

No, not guilty usually. Although, sometimes it does affect me emotionally. Certain anxieties tend to creep into the dream world, so you can't really escape them sometimes.

This ground is soiled by those before me and their lies. I dare not look up for on me I feel their eyes

Do people allow themselves to be however in their dreams or do they try to act as they would in real life? Personally i try to act as my real life self. I find dreams to be most meaningful this way. Otherwise like how people often think of dreams, if you aren't true to life in your dreams, then they are nonsensical.
Using sex as an escape for an empty life doesn't work. That's what anime is for.

I feel guilty for my brain having come up with the messed up things in some of my dreams.

Around a month ago, in one of my dreams, I checked the mailbox and found two cassette tapes in a Ziploc bag. They looked like audio tapes, but in the dream they functioned like VHS video tapes. On the video, there were young children in water...getting attacked and eaten by wild animals...and I could hear adult voices commenting and laughing, watching without interfering.

Thankfully, most of my dreams aren't disturbing like that one.

Most of the time when there's danger, it's just me getting chased by dinosaurs. A few times I woke up the moment I got caught by one. lol

I used to have dreams of smothering my brother in his sleep. I mean I probably wouldn't do it for real so I dont feel bad about it. But sleeping with murderers nah especially if you didn't know if they were a murderer before anyway. I had a crush on a dude who murdered his mom so....

I don't think so. If you feel guilty over your dreams then you may not be able to tell dreams from reality. A common trait of people with schizophrenia

To me, it's not too different from having intrusive thoughts. It's okay as long as you don't act on them. The guilt you feel is a healthy sign.

Imo being guilty bc of what happens in dreams is incredibly misguided (to not use the word stupid...). Dreams are more of a way for your mind to either manifest subconscious issues/insecurities or just another way for everyday stress to manifest (depends how mentally stable u are lolz), so generally it's best to treat them more as a very intimate learning experience if you can even remember them well enough.

Odd dream, OP.

Mostly no, but if a dream reflects a sexual desire that is immoral, for example, rape, then I would hope the person feels ashamed about it.

not unless you desire the actions when you wake up, and even then, as long as you have self control youre fine

Back in the good old days you could blame someone else for what happened in your dreams by saying they were witch.

Then they were burned at the stake.

We need to bring that back.

if you feel guilty about it then its part of OCD and symptoms like intrusive thoughts and thought-action fusion

No its just your brain trying to process stuff you dont have any control over it so dont feel guilty.

You can take dreams as a sign that you may need to stop doing certain things for example i think alot about death and sometimes get very paranoid about my surroundings because my brain thinks about all the different ways i could die right now. This leads to me dying in almost every dream i have, last night i had a nightmare that i was a soldier in ww1 sitting in the trenches when the enemies came and used mustard gas i woke up.

Last year in october i had a dream that i was drowning while in real life i was choking on my own vomit i woke up in a panic desperately gasping for air i had to go to the hospital that was one of the worst days in my life.

Sometimes dreams are a sign of your mental state sometimes they represent what happens in real life.

In conclusion try not to choke on your vomit while sleeping its not a fun experience

i went to rehab and fixed my life right
and just recently i had a horrible horrible horrible dream - i did drugs in that dream
and i felt really scared when i woke up and i felt really really guilty
i decided to use this dream as a wake up call
maybe i got too comfy? i am still an addict right, i need to keep that in mind, i am a vulnerable person, so i should be more careful

and i feel like guilt is a human emotion that is good to have, and if u do something bad in the dream to me it feels it should be only natural that u feel guilty - people should feel guilty when they do bad stuff, even if its a dream, thats what i think
u feel guilty for a bit, reinterpret the thing, maybe learn a lesson and yeah u keep going on with ur life its not that big of a deal i guess

in ur dream tho, ure the victim right? victims shouldnt feel guilty - theyre victims, that would be victim-blaming, and its not good, its jeff that did a bad thing, not u

There's no reason to be ashamed about your dreams. Most of them are complete bullshit and are usually just affected by something you thought about that day or something like that.

Feeling bad for what you do in a dream is the same as feeling bad for what you do in GTA 5, which is stupid

Of course not, unless it's a lucid dream and you willingly do something bad.
