Does anyone else get tired hearing people calling others or themselves weebs or weeaboos? I think I am. Just because you love anime or other Japanese stuff wouldn't mean you want to be call a weeb or a weeaboo. I think it sounds cringe in a way sometimes for me. It kinda offends people who learn Japanese, those that love Japanese culture, or even people that love Japan.

its incorrect overuse is getting annoying. people think they like watching anime and they suddenly call themselves weebs but that's not what a weeb is. they need to learn what weeb and otaku is.

The end of an era. Thank you Wit, Mappa and Isayama.

Yes. "Weaboo" means a person not native to Japan who obsessively worships Japanese culture and flaunts its perceived superiority over other cultures. Since examples of that sort of person are few and far between and barely existent outside of parodic media, teenagers who have a bone to pick with people for liking Japanese media misuse and dilute the term by using it as an insult for anyone they feel like, since they'd otherwise never get to abuse it to the extent they do.

I don't take anyone who uses the term "weeb" seriously, even if they use it to self-deprecate for some incomprehensible and masochistic reason.

"People who learn Japanese, those that love Japanese culture, or even people that love Japan" is kinda long and doesn't feel catchy, weeb it is.

I hate that it's no longer an insult but I still use the term weebshit because it sounds funny. I don't care about offending guys who like japan. They can handle it.

Since when was it an insult and why even bother offending anyone with it anyway. Doesn't it sound cringe?

Language is a convention, there are no laws of the universe which rigorously set the definition of weebs and otakus. If enough of us liked the idea, nothing would stop us from calling weebs "pillow breeders", for instance. And whenever change happens you can either reject it trying to school everyone on semantics that might no longer hold any value, or just spare your effort for fights that are actually worth fighting. Just saying, weebs.

I call myself a weeb and I don't have a problem with it, at least not the same problem as with weeaboo or otaku which are both super ultra mega cringe in their own ways. I don't really see how it's particularly offensive so as to be reluctant towards its use. And I don't really have any other words to use so what the heck else am I supposed to say?

It's horrendously misused, just like "otaku" is a misused term.
Being a weeb means completely denouncing your own culture for Japanese culture as seen in anime. Just liking anime for the good shows they are =/= weeb (or, to be precise, wapanese, since weeaboo came from a word filter - a comedic way to fight off repetitive posts - on 4chan for the word "wapanese").

It is extremely cringe and most people who use it don't know what it means, I mean, it does describe them well but the fact that they are actually calling themselves that is weird af

It doesn’t bother me at all, it’s just yet another buzzword that’s been diluted to the point where it basically means nothing now. Not worth taking seriously.

Anime fans hate their own fellow fans enough to make words like "weeb", said with hostile intention, actually have a neutral meaning.

Kinda I do agree with orginal comment that it gets annoying after years of being into such... wouldn't say cringe though, but if is annoying, it's a yes, perhaps some other word can be used or just simply said that we like Japan in general besides anime... not sure about others opinion, still it's slowly pissing me off sometimes...

it's just slang that otaku calls themselves and others now, you can't really change that. It's now part of the culture, and it's staying. It's not longer a real insult that normies can throw at weebs, because weebs don't care and they call themselves that. It's still probably slightly insulting, but it's lost most of its genuine mocking connotation and is just slang, or self-deprecatory slang. I don't think most people care either way anymore, whether they're otaku calling themselves that or normies using it as an actual insult.

Gotta' inject them all!

As for the topic of the thread, weeb and weeaboo have always struck me as such cringy and odd slang that I'm seriously not sure I've used them unironically outside of this sentence.

The word weeb was used as an insult 10 years ago. Did you not know that? It's why people ironically call themselves weebs and use the term happily like they're wearing badges of honor.

The term weeb specifically used for people who like anime. It doesn't offend in anyway people who are learning Japanese or in love with its cultures.

And I don't mind the term weebs.

Same here. Also, thank you for providing the definition to "weeaboo".

I don't really care about the slangs, just brush it off and back to being me. its just a joke anyway in my book.
However if you see those kind of people who say weebs as an insult, you might be at the wrong environment or friends. So just smile at them and ignore them knowing you handle this like an proper adult

sometimes it's easier to use that word in favor of "anime watcher" or "that person likes to watch anime" or "anime fan"
And if you use the term 'otaku' you need to at least be familiar with the word to understand why someone who watches anime might refer themselves as that, as an international.

Anytime I hear those terms, I'm compelled to show those people this:

If that doesn't work, I usually just add "uguu" or "desu" to the end of my sentences for an hour. Very subtly, uguu.

I like the term weeb and yes I know it's history. I think weeb is a term of endearment western anime fans use. You never here it used in A derogatory way(ATLEAST I DON'T).only weebs know what a weeb is. So yeah, words change and now in the west weeb just means anime fan. I like the word weeb.
