How did this feel like SAO at all? We love SAO for the death game vibes, which this movie didn't feel like that at all. it felt like a boring drama and it had nothing to do with the original SAO. very dissaopinted

Just returned from the screening in India. Went with the same friend group as I did for the last film (we have decided to watch all of these together till the day the keep making them :P), and even went in the same format i.e. 4DX. Kinda enjoyed this movie even more than the last one because I genuinely enjoyed that the point of the film wasn't just to survive the game, but to survive the POLITICS that come as the game progresses. Well executed. Have read Light Novels till 3rd floor so was the only person in the group who knew Argo lol and had to explain it to the others haha!

Sheesh I can finally watch this movie today, I've been waiting to do so for ages since the last movie.

That scene when Asuna lost her weapon tho, she took long enough to get another weapon outta her inventory lmao.

Asuna's little scream strat went really well lol.

It's pretty interesting to see some floor bosses that weren't shown in the original anime, we got to see some game mechanics we haven't seen before. Mito really came out of nowhere while Asuna was caught by the boss lol.

The Kirito and Asuna duo is pretty strong as usual. Asuna cries a lot in this movie too lol, can't have sao without someone tearing up lmao.

Welp, the previous movie was better imo. The end doesn't feel like an end much, like something should happen after that, idk. If we're going to have another one of the progressive movies, we prolly gonna be introduced to the laughing coffin group next time I feel.

Never ending plan to watch list...

This was good, I really enjoyed it.
The story was nice, animation and soundtrack are top notch. The fights were badass and fun to watch.
The Floor 5 boss and his mechanics were really cool ngl. Would love to fight one like that in a game.

Also this dropped completely out of nowhere (at least for me). Thank god I had free time today.

Idk what to say about the movie, I was just sad by the end of it, the predictions I did something like 6 years ago are all becoming true.

Most of the people won't feel a thing from the first half of the movie, cuz there's no background to it, the progressive animes made no effort to explain it, Asuna's importance to her rapier is extremely high, it's one of the few things keeping her from suiciding in Aincrad, there's also her despair of PVPing that was 100% ignored in the movie, I just hope they aren't digging yet another future plot hole.
That said, the animation was better than the last movie, but that's it, this movie felt even more bland, the last movie had the scene where Kirito saves Asuna from the mob's mouth, and that one was very well directed, this movie couldn't deliver another one of that caliber.
I just feel the decision of skipping floors is just yet again the same error the author did with the original Aincrad, the anime-only fans of SAO at best have knowledge about the mediocre story telling of the franchise, it's a bummer, cuz the novels are pretty above the average.

In most cases, the MAL Average Scores don't mean anything, here is a question: were the works made before 2000 all shit?
Why are they so damn scarce in the Top 50? Think about how MAL is quite literally a filtered amount of the Anime fanbase.

Here's a timeline of the Top 15 in which you can check that, almost always, the scores are affected by the freshness, popularity and other factors that have nothing to do with quality.

Asuna is being handled so much better in these movies than in the main series lmao, which is good because she's been a character that I really liked (the second arc of the first series was very hard and disappointing to watch though).

these movies have been so much better than the original series, the story is not particularly intriguing but its entertaining enough, what surprises me are the characters, these use to be among the worst ive seen an now, they are fine, i dont find them annoying anymore

though seeing as there are 100 floors, they have to skip a lot of those right?

Best girl Mito!, Movie was very lackluster until Mito came in. Mito and Asuna's duel was 10/10. The monster was ok, and the fight was not close to good as first movie. The whole movie was lackluster if Mito wasn't here to save it. The Kirito and Asuna fine wine scenes were boring chit chat compared to the beginning when they first met.

Mito was the only interesting character, her wielding scythe is still so epic, and I love the tone of her character. After running away made her all too disabled, "Long ago were the days I could", Mito still cares deeply for her friend Asuna and about protecting her. Though withdrawn and dejected, not forgetting that she is a veteran, Mito still shows to be better and stronger than Asuna :)

Second movie was ok, also so good it did Mito perfectly.

I like the direction the story is taking and the main focus is on Asuna, very good animation throughout and the epic boss fight was a plus. Asuna is the only character I really like with a few of the other side characters like Argo & Misumi, the villains are really putting it in and really feel the lv of suspense out of them. The Future of Sword Art Online, looks good hope they make a new TV series run and don't give up on it.

It's been years since I last read the manga of SAO Progressive. But I don't remember anything from this movie happening in the manga. And I don't understand why. This movie is SAO Progressive in name only.

I know the first movie wasn't exactly faithful to the source material either. With a completely new character called Mito added to the mix. But it feels like this movie is barely related to the source material. And once again, they skipped a ton of content and skipped right ahead to floor 5. As if they ignored the biggest criticism of SAO Season 1.

The scope of this movie also feels a lot smaller than the last movie. It just doesn't feel like a movie. Someone else has said it already, it feels more like it should've been a TV series than a movie.

And with this movie, I can kiss all hopes for a proper SAO Progressive anime adaptation goodbye. It doesn't seem like they're interested in adapting the source faithfully. It really did go downhill.

Argo was done so dirty. But all things considered, it was still a fun flick to watch after turning your brain off for a moment.

I think a third movie is inevitable because this series prints money. But after turning the brain on again, it felt so disappointing. I'm not sure if I'd watch a 3rd movie if they do make one based on this. I guess it's time for me to move on from SAO and finally give up on this series. I'm done waiting to see the series "get better". It's obvious it's not gonna happen.

Switch! This second movie followed up nicely and delivered yet another fresh glimpse into the familiar setting of Aincrad. I became fond of the fifth floor very quickly. Between a night of treasure hunting in the town & the catacombs below, I found myself soon enchanted by this new setting. It was also a pleasant surprise to see Argo get some real screentime, as I only started appreciating her in earnest just last month while I was playing Fatal Bullet. Kibaou was also surprisingly level headed and much more likable compared to the few impressions he left in the TV series.

Mito is shaping up nicely, though I like how she took a bit of a backseat this time around to emphasize Kirito & Asuna. She seems well established enough as a character now, so in the future it'd be nice to keep seeing her pop up as part of the continued world building. And as far as the lore goes, my favorite part of this movie was seeing the dots connecting towards LC's formation & influence on SAO. That last scene with PoH had me holding my breath. As soon as I heard about the guild flag, my thoughts immediately turned to its devastating potency for PKers to exploit.

The production quality was top notch, though the character design for Kirito felt a bit iffy and I don't like this trend of sound effects being much louder than voices in movies. Other than that, the rest of the movie was a sight to behold.

8/10.

The boss fights looked cool, especially the level 5 boss. They had to figure out the game mechanics and used teamwork and various skills to beat it. Also, the waifu battles looked good, especially Asuna vs. Misumi. I'm glad it wasn't cliche, and Asuna lost.

Asuna looked beautiful as always! I like her fanservice scenes too. Her outfit is sexy enough. I like the combination of her thigh-high stockings and mini skirt revealing a bit of her juicy thigh. It makes me wanna lift her skirt and screw her hard from behind while I slap her ass hard!

That was PoH at the end, right?

Unlike the first movie, didn't feel like much happened other than resolving potential guild conflict, Kibaou not paying for his food,  and the two encounters with he PK'ers with the rest of the movie feeling like sidestory content (relics, swimsuit food fight and new year celebration). Still I quite liked the cool boss fight mechanics and how they dealt with it.

It just wasn't interesting for me. We didn't found out much about how 5th level looks like and what monsters, unique items and deadly traps are there. Sometimes I wanted to stop watching movie (there was a scene where Asuna and Argo were playing beside pool). No matter what happens, Deus ex machina aka Kirito will come and in just few slices solve all problems. Also when Kirito and Asuna were crawling through tunnel, there was a zoom in at Asuna's a**.
characters: 4
Kirito and Asuna sometimes act too childish for me. What really lacked this movie is side characters which are more interesting and have more depth. Every side characters (besides Mito) in this movie is just person x which is specialist in something and is helping main characters. Besides that we don't know anything about side characters.
music: 9
During battles music is spot on. It raised intensity during boss battles.

Probably even better than the first movie, they really did well in fleshing out these characters and making them feel alive and human, it's far more rich and meticulous, watching a slightly different SAO in movie format. The world building itself is far greater as well, it's much more immersed in these surroundings and the going-ons of every day life in this death game. Even if the plot progression was slow, it was superbly executed. 8/10.

I remember when movies weren't just a glorified bundle of standard TV episodes.
This should have really just been a spin-off TV anime. It's storyboarded like a TV anime and even the animation doesn't hold up from a movie standard point of view.

1st movie I did really have fun. It was interesting seeing the relationship between Asuna and Mito.

2nd movie didn´t have that at all. This movie was very uninteresting. Mito was basically replaced by Kirito-kun and Asuna in now "Kirito-kun~" here and then.

Anyway, curiously, when Asuna met Mito in this movie she said "I am here to show -how strong I have gotten- I don´t need to depend on you anymore to protect me" or something like. Of course... of course, cause now Kirito is there hahaha

Kirito on the other hand was just there; he kinda of lacks personality.. I don´t know how can I put into words.. it was as if he was an NPC following Asuna and that is it.

*sigh* this was kinda of frustating and the relationship between Asuna and Kirito felt kinda forced. And surely that gotta implicit romance. It was as if they needed that OP male character to counter the interesting relationship between two girls and destroy every potential / possible yuri-like scene xD and to reassure the male protagonist is there so viewers can relate to them.

I don´t even remeber if Mito ever appears in the main series, by the way.

By the way (2), I don´t have NOTHING against Kirito-kun as many viewers out there do. I don´t like him but I don´t dislike either, I am pretty much neutral.

-----------------

CONCLUSION: In general, very average movie and kinda boring most of the time. I was expecting more of Asuna and less of Kirito. I was expecting more of the atrong/independent Asuna. In the very last minutes almost we had the S&M villain/antagonist to sexually assault or torture Asuna - again, as it´s praxi in SAO *sigh* If that really have happened I would have rated this movie 4/10.

Anyway, easy 5/10

Mito stole the show with her scythe. Looked sexy doing it too. How are anime girls so badass and also attractive?

Film without suprises with the typical elements of this saga.
The best, the fight against the boss
the worst, the plot, typical

The hidden story, the plot forgotten in the anime, advance, but without surprises.

Where did Argo pull that banana from?

Good movie, almost felt like an overlength episode of a series, it just flows well, but it also doesnt really hit the same way you would expect a movie to.

A1 certainly knows how to make anime, the animation was amazing! Only complaint would be Kirito having a baby face in some scenes.

Asuna and Kirito are already such a perfect team by now, will they ever split up in progressive?
I always thought the strongest point of SAO was their relationship but going for 70 floors with just sweet romance would be boring and contradict the main setting too much.
This project doesnt give me the feeling they ever intend to split them up.
Also Kirito would be too boring if he was already sociable, a main part of his character was that he didnt know how to interact with others..

Tied to this in a sense is I have the feeling that the characters are weirdly flat? They spend 0 time on the characters we already know, instead making a new one and bringing Mito from the last movie back. Sure we might get some developement on the original squad later on, but it would have been nice to see what they are up to.

I mean Asuna and Kirito already acting as if they were in a relationship like in Alicization just feels weird.
It just lacks the spice.. Asuna beeing new to online games also seems to be a thing of the past now. It just seems like we move way too fast and their characters are way ahead of the setting.

On a side note, wasnt the point of progressive not to skip floors? And they already skip 3 by the second movie? Or are these the ones they skipped because the LN wasnt done with that arc yet?

I think its a better movie than the last one but as far as SAO goes I would rather watch the original show.. which is weird considering progressive was supposed to be better. By now though its clear this movie project does not really know what it wants and from what I know about progressive it doesnt do it justice at all. I will have to read the source sooner rather than later and I am already not looking forward to the search for it..

7/10

PS: watching a movie which celebrates new year for 2023 at the end of said year feels odd.

Unlike the first movie which worked quite well as a retelling, this one was kinda lackluster.
The boss room was a cool fight, took them long enough to realize stepping on the lines would make the limbs appear.
It's nice to see Asuna and Kirito's relationship advance though.
