There isn't much to comment about really other than the fact that the animation looks decent and seems to be more consistent with the first half of the first season. I have a small nitpick, however. I am a fan of Yamada Yutaka, but with the OST that was played in this episode, I almost felt like it was a slightly modified version of one of Tokyo Ghoul's OSTs. I listen to his Tokyo Ghoul OSTs quite often and his other works. He has a recognizable style, but this time, it felt like he wasn't even trying to make it sound different. I wish something else was composed instead of that.
I sometimes forget to finish my sentences.

Great start, most definitely my favorite premiere episode of Winter 2023 anime along with Bungou Stray Dogs S4. The direction, music, animation....everything was on-point. Really glad to see Thorfinn again. I've heard amazing things about this arc and had to hold myself back from reading the manga first, really excited to finally see how the story unfolds!

And wow this is the first time in a while I've really liked both the OP and ED of a show on the first listen. Definitely gonna add the songs to my playlist. I'm glad to hear LMYK again; her voice is so beautiful.

They didn't completely butcher the anime but it was flat as hell as expected. Mappa really should stop snatching projects from Wit studio. The subtle colors and animation details of Wit style bring every anime they make to life. Mappa on its own make good things but they really can't be the successor to Wit. The difference in quality is as bright as day. Really any studio taking over after Wit will not win. I'm seriously crying over here. The final scene of the first season finale is better than this entire episode.

Also what kind of opening is this? How dare they put this weak song after Mukanjyu and Dark Crow. They could have at least got Sim to do the opening.

Apart from like 2-3 the rest of the staff is the same

Holy crap they invested some money into this. That OP was absolutely wild to watch while high. Easy to overlook just how insane it is.

I pretty much cried through most of it. It's hard to believe that there'd be an anime specifically about my ancestors and I really feel a connection to this new character.

Probably going to be anime of the year.

Einar's Origin was even better than the manga.
Fortunately, the animation was the same as seen in trailers, so I'm pleased with this episode.
The Production Team is still as good as in the first season, hopefully this one keep up its quality until the end.

After three years, it's finally back.

The OP gave me chills. I do miss Mukanjyo the powerful vibe it had but this one is beautiful and the calmness will go with this old and mature Thorfinn.

As how it started with Einar. It's really sad how his happy days with his family ended so quickly and it's also understandable how he freezed after seeing his dying mother but I wish he was strong enough to leave the mother and run away with his sister. Lotta was so pretty I wish she lived longer :-(

I liked the ED but still need a few more listen to get use to it.

Goddamn, I cannot say anything other than that first episode was downright cinematic in presentation. from the inclusion of actual Old Norse poetry reading voiced by an Icelandic speaker (assumed this to be the case just because of how natural and authentic and not choppy or labored the pronunciation sounded even though I'm completely unfamiliar myself with it and Scandinavian languages in general) to the music of both the OP and ED, the original Vinland Saga OST feeling even more weighty now after the passage of both events and time throughout the first season and since the first season to the second, the perspective shift to previously unintroduced characters, and more all imparting a real sense of scale and grandeur to the world. As both a history guy and fan of historical and historical fiction films such as war epics and other period piece dramas, it really was evocative of some of the same feeling I get from some of the better historical epics in live action film.

In a way it's odd as it's like the exact opposite number to much of what I usually enjoy most in anime, which is more the very intimate and even insular, small scale experience of limited number of characters and events which characterizes more iyashikei Slice of Life and psychological-oriented series. This is a sweeping, time jumping, era-defining, big picture historical drama in tried and true fashion. More the bird's eye view (in this case like a soaring eagle or falcon) than the fly on the wall.

Although season one also, especially toward the second half and its end and particularly revolving around Canute and Askeladd, didn't shy away from that harried inner turmoil of psychological crisis and the struggle to set goals and define one's moral and/or philosophical outlook in the face of external conflict and a raging, tumultuous world. To start large in a way with the view from above and then contract inward might be an interesting and desirable option and approach. I actually felt the first season progressed like that, despite there being plenty of relational character drama, tragedy, loss, etc. in the very early episodes, the ramifications of how it translated to the pathos of the main characters and what that actually meant for shaping the world around them only seemed to snowball and be intimately felt later on (at least by me).

Vinland Saga, I think it's fair and not overly premature to say, definitely stands a reasonable chance of moving up in my Top 50 depending on how this all develops from here over the course of this new season.

one of the best anime ever with the shittest start to season 2. the first ten minutes were very dumb. when the family was running and mum got shot, the son could've carried his mum and ran with his sister instead they kept being retarded, also instead of letting the sick girl drown to death, they couldve killed her first.

Characters making a dumb decision or what you consider to be a dumb decision doesn't make the series itself or the writing dumb. Just as Viking characters pillaging, raping and slaughtering their way through a village in the English countryside doesn't make the writer a thief, rapist, and murderer.

OTHER OF THE BEST FIRST CHAPTERS OF THE ANIME I HAVE SEEN

This first chapter is, in my opinion, practically perfect. It starts with different characters, other scenarios, and a new story. For a few moment it seems you were watching another anime, but soon you discover you not. MAPPA definitely is making a good job: the colors, the animation, the pictures, the illumination, the music and other things is very good. If they keep like that VINLAND SAGA SEASON 2 will be a work of art, something I expect.

The story of the manga is very spectacular, and I expect MAPPA is able to adapt it so good, something we find out over time. There is still a long way to go to see if this season will be good, but so far they are starting very well.

The OP and ED songs are both phenomenal. I got chills from listening to them.

Man. I still can't get over the fact that we have another season of Vinland Saga. Time flies.

I really feel bad for Einar. He was having a peaceful time with his mom and sister at the farm. Then shit hits the fan when the vikings pillaged and raided his farmland. Killing both his mother and sister. What a fucked up day.

To deepen the wound, Einar becomes a slave. But luckily for him, he gets bought my a friendly man who will eventually introduce him to Thorfinn.

Honestly, can't wait to see what season 2 has to offer. I still don't think any character will top Askeladd but who knows?
