i was unwittingly exposed to Anime around 4 or 5... became aware and entered fandom around 13 to 14,
and today, at 40, i am more hardcore OTAKU than i have ever been before... So... i'd say NO.

Why did you say not counting the Japanese are you implying they get a pass for liking anime as old people?

Anyways there is no age limit. I'm pretty sure there's someone in this forum who is like 50 or 60 even. In fact I wish there were more old anime fans because I hate children.

When I am 80 years old I'll still be vibing to whatever CGDCT slice of life anime is big at the time.

Honestly, a lot of old people would probably be happier if they used their free time to watch anime. My Nana doesn't have any real hobbies so all she does is obsess over the news & gossip about church drama with her old lady friends. She's currently stockpiling food for the impending "liberal takeover." Nana, take a chill-pill and watch some Yuru Camp. It will be okay.

For the good of society, we should start a program to convert more old people into anime fans so they have something to do other than obsessively consuming political misinformation on Facebook.

I started anime when I was 8
Currently I am 19 and have no plans to stop it.
Even if from now I will only be watching 2-3 seasonals only & no binge (cuz shitty ass college), I will still continue animu

Now answering the question, there aint no limitations fo anime. At the end of the day its just a hobby. And hobbies require desire not age

I turned 40 this year and watch more anime now than ever (apart from the lockdown ofc) as it's so easy to access. As other users have already said a lot of the reason I got into anime just over 10 years ago was the easy access to anime on demand with streaming services. When i was a kid I was only able to watch cartoons on Saturday morning tv once a week and the odd anime film or DBZ ep on satellite tv at a mates now and then, so suddenly having access to this medium is like a hoard of treasure for me. There's so much variety so my tastes have evolved over time and I don't get bored.

There was a recent thread titled '25+' that asked the same question as OP and there were so many replies from older anime fans here on mal, many of them just don't post much on the forums.

There's a variety of anime. Some meant for children. Some meant for teenagers. Some for adults. And some for even older. When there is such a variety, then there is no limit in terms of age.

You and me personally don't know anyone over 40 liking anime but I know some or many people that has already aged still loves anime, because I will also. There's just no age limit to stop liking the things you like, and there shouldn't be.

I’m 32 and still enjoying it. I’d watched on and off in my younger years mainly through Toonami and Adult Swim. But, I didn’t really pick it up seriously and really get into it until 28.

I’ve personally enjoyed every second of it, and am proud of it. Most of my casual wear is anime related, I watch at the gym while doing cardio, I have stickers on my car. I don’t really have any plans of ever dropping it completely, as it’s a hobby I highly enjoy.

Things do change though- and who know what my mindset will be in 10 or 20 years.

Everyone knows only kids are allowed to enjoy fun stuff, once you're a grown up the only acceptable hobbies are watching sport and hanging out at the pub, being an adult isn't about doing what you want it's about acting the same way and liking the same stuff as each other.

I'm 44 as of this post and will be 45 on April 6th 2023. I got into anime at age 2 before I knew it was anime (first show was GRENDIZER) and from the point I knew it was anime was from age 13 in 1991.

I have over 100 DVDs and about 18 Blu-rays (I still prefer to own my stuff) and have about 30 VHS still. My 17 year old daughter was named after the Perfect Soldier Fyana from the 1983 Mecha series Armored Trooper VOTOMS and she's into select anime (a fan of the show of her origin) and currently loves Golden Kamuy... My 13 year old son is a huge Sailor Moon fan and we watch that together, soo. The start the 1973 show Cutie Honey together, but recently bonded over Konosuba, GATE, Kimetsu No Yaiba.

My almost 81 year old father still watches anime with me too, his favorites being Hokuto no Ken (Fist of the North Star) and Souten no Ken (Fist of the Blue Sky) and GOLGO 13. MOMZ is almost 76 and still watches anime, her favorites being URUSEI YATSURA and City Hunter.

So yes old heads and current generation alike watch Japanimation / Anime

you can "like" anime as long as you want. no matter what age you're in. hell, even my dad (44 y.o atm) still watches some shounen since his college days till this day.

I don't think so. I think their tastes may change and refine, though.
For example, when I was younger, I appreciated Shonan anime such as Dragon Ball. But as I matured and aged, my interests shifted to Seinen anime.
Now, I'm an "Elitist" who struggles with anything that even feels slightly like Shonan, as I want a deep and compelling experience that challenges my thought process and world views.
Although, exceptions such as JoJo's Bizzare Adventure and Space Dandy do still exist for me.
I'm 30 years old, for reference.

On the flip side, some people also go the opposite route as they age and prefer Slice of Life anime so they can forget about their "old people" problems xD
Like taxes, rent, parking, serious relationships, health and all that jazz.

I'm 68, coming up on 69 in 2 months. There is no age limit on watching and enjoying anime. Although at 9 years old (no such thing as internet at that time) I started watching Astro Boy on broadcast TV in 1963 and didn't know it was anime. Followed that up watching Speed Racer in the early 70's and Star Blazers , the precursor to the Battleship Yamato series, with my sons in 1979, again on broadcast TV. I remember watching Vampire Hunter D on TV but don't remember when. Unfortunately during my 21 year Navy career, due to operational commitments, there wasn't any access to anime, not to mention the only movies or shows broadcasted aboard ship during the 1970's and 80's, were old and not anime. During my 25 year career as a 911 Dispatcher, rotating 8 hour shifts and then 12 hour shifts didn't leave much time to watch anything and I wasn't aware of the availability or access to anime until I retired in 1993 when I re-discovered anime. Since my retirement, I have been catching up on shows that I missed.

You are never to old to enjoy anime. For some, life events whether job related or family responsibilities can take time and precedence over watching anime or even other visual entertainment.
I will be watching anime til the day I die. Maybe I'll be isekai'ed in my next life.

There obviously isn't an age limit. Anime is a medium, like movies or novels, and those don't have age limits either. Obviously, all mediums have different genres and demographics and what not, but in a general sense, there is always something for everyone.

Almost 30 and I can't see myself stopping watching. I don't watch hollywood movies or series, so time will never be the problem. Also anime evolved so much so it's stupid to compare it with something that only children or teens would watch.

No there isn't. You just grow tired of it. It depends on what age it happens to you, or you might never get tired of it in which case you still watch it but like one show a year

Why would there be an age limit, and why should there be an age limit? You'd be surprised at the number of people over the age of 50 that read manga, and watch anime. It's also my understanding that in Japan, it's not uncommon to see the elderly in bookstores browsing manga.

You don't know anyone who likes anime that is over 40 coz anime wasn't popular 40years ago. In 60' there wasn't any one over 40 that liked rock music. Did baby boomers stopped liking it when they aged? no.

but you shouldnt stop your hobbies just because of age, wtf.

Ofc there is no age limit.
It's the same as watching live action series and you don't outgrow them either.

On the other hand, the older I get the more unenjoyable a lot of anime become. I got 30 and since years watching dumb middle or high schoolers making fuss about their hormones and all the pubertal jokes in anime... it gets more and more unenjoyable.
There are good anime characters at the age of ca. 15-18, but a lot of them and plots around them are annoying and I surely don't want to see them being sexualized either.

So I only watch most of those, if I want something I don't have to focus on, but I don't take it too serious.
There are a bunch of other anime and manga that I love or at least caught my interest.

Somewhat i guess, being big into anime past your 40s is fine as long as you keep your power level down(Anime Blue-Ray's Poster wallpaper and Figure), you can you still enjoy anime all you want but just don't be weird about and that goes for anything in life it's fine to still enjoy anime yes, but think about how much you want to show it off i feel like people its much better to discuss it with others online.

It has nothing to do with age. Some people are consumed by their anger, and their hearts have hardened. Others have been abused at a job they'ved worked for 30 years until they die on the inside and have no place for joy in their lives. A few are graduate students who are so desperate to pay off student loans that they spend 80 hours a week working at a university and have no time or energy for anime or any other fun thing.

If we continue to invite these poor lost souls to watch our favorite anime and read our favorite manga, we may be able to save one or two and show them that: This is the Way.

If it's just normal anime consumption then no, not at all. infact a lot of shows such as slice of lives and things such as sazae-san that air in japan are aired at all ages and such.
although if it's something completely degenerate such as a 50 year old man with a loli pfp and a user like "loli savage" then that's major red flags

i can imagine i'd get tired of it years and years later, sick of the same tropes and such etc etc but i'll stick around for as long as i can who knows about others

No of course not.

There are adults who still watch Pixar movies and enjoy them. If an adult can be hyped for the upcoming spiderverse movie then he can watch anime. Both are animation and the only difference is the country they’re produced in.

Besides, anime has the seinen genre which is pretty much geared towards adults.
