I enjoyed Hataraku Maou-sama’s first season because for all its role reversals, slapstick circumstances, and the accommodations that the former inhabitants of Ente Isla were forced to make on migrating to Japan, it was at its heart a comedy about immigrants and the baggage they bring with them to their new home. But in this second season, 9 actual years later, familiarity breeds contempt as much of the underlying tension between human and demon camps has dissipated along with the newcomer gags. The animation quality has suffered and the series feels forced, as characters and the plot try to find reasons for existing, and we’re saddled with a tired parenting comedy as the excuse that binds the series together. Rewatch the first season, skip the second.

I need to say that, it's just me that dislikes how mean/obnoxious Emi is with Maou? even in season 1 she is like that, and i know people will try to say she is a tsundere, but let's face it, not even a tsundere would purposely made a "father" think his daughter died just to see him suffer, and yes, that's what she admitted on doing and even said that if it wasn't for chi she would have continued it.
The whole show points that Maou's objectives may not be as selfish, and now we just learned he didn't even killed Emi's mother (maybe didn't even killed the father too), so when things get settled i honestly hope Emilia honestly apologize for being that mean every single time, but hey, we all know this will never happen, sadly
I got spoiled at the ending and im so happy i know how the series ends

I'm so glad to see someone feels the same as me, I'm only seeing people pointing out the bad art but I feel like the story overall is much worse? Like you said the part what made the show funny in S1 is completely gone and instead of it they just slapped a baby in there for cuteness points. I was very excited to see this show coming back but now I'm not sure if it's worth watching if it stays like this the whole season.

+1 to that in that it all feels forced; it doesn't feel fun anymore. I wonder if the light novels took a downgrade in the writing at this point, or if White Fox simply just handled the source material better. Because S1 felt full of life; S2 so far feels dead to the point that I almost don't even recognize these characters anymore. S1 was a 7 or 8 out of 10. S2 has fallen to a 2 or 3

And I don't even have to mention the animation because holy shit this episode though. I was just getting used to the new art style and then they hit us with THIS absolute stunner.

did the art style change again??? i swear this ep is by far the worst one visually. it wasnt Awful but definitely the worst out of the other 3.

sleeping scene was cute. emilia asking maou abt what happened to the guy in his story was :(. and ashiya's explanation on why they wanted more was good. we're getting even closer to their story. also fuckin king satan cried that was unexpected, but i liked it.

and oh i finally watched the full ed lmao Dont rly like it why tf it all abt chii-chan๐Ÿ˜ฆ main selling point of this series is maou-emi-alas ramus found family + the gang getting more used n closer to eachother but the ed is allll abt chii-chan๐Ÿ˜’๐Ÿ˜’๐Ÿ˜’๐Ÿ˜’๐Ÿ˜’๐Ÿ˜’ can u tell im not a fan of her but Ok whatever ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

If by episode 4 you have no idea what the plot, character motivation or inter character relationships are for any of the cast... then it goes without saying how badly the story is managed.

Seriously I zoned out during the exposition dump of the crystal shard thing and don't care to go back to it. In season 1 it was all clear from minute one, so much so you can summarize the plot and each character's motivation/relationship in one sentence. I dare anyone to attempt that with this mess.

Ngl that begining scene is so hard to watch...
I miss White Fox Artstyle.

It's always great to have Takehito Koyasu as Gabriel.
Man voice is iconic.

Alas Ramus send Gabriel flying was hilarious.

Post credit scene : Lailah is Emilia mother?

The artwork / animation for this episode is hideous , terrible , absolutely low class animator..
Do the artist for the studio do a last minute job or what ??
Lazy + no motivation to improve.. just give other studio to do..
The storyline for this anime is really great if you read the manga , but the studio that been given the job to do the adaptation was so low class.. so terrible..

It's nice to see Maou cry, I want to see more of his tears...

Anyway, a decline in quality is just a tip of the iceburg of the problem of this sequel. The main problem is that the story doesn't deliver to the name of the anime. The name of the anime is translated to Working (Hataraku) Demon King (Maousama) right? We only see Demon King do all kind of things, except working (as a part-timer) which is kinda a prominent point of the first season. If I want to watch Demon King fight I could go watch dozens of other anime, but only this anime has Demon King serve french fries to a customer. And if this season doesn't have that, then what is its uniqueness?

Exactly. What if I DGAF about Alas Ramus? Or the Sephod of whatever. Or any of that. I want to see the Devil mopping floors while Chi is mooning over him. I want to see the manager chew the Devil out from itime to time. This story is boring/generic.

I really liked the story telling element. Other than that it’s gut wrenching watching one of my favorite shows get such a lazy adaptation. The animation this episode was downright painful to look at at times.

I also feel that it’s missing a groundedness in place & culture that S1 had. There was always this sense that “we are in another world that’s foreign to us” that practically shaped how the story could progress. This season feels like it might as well be happening anywhere with people born & raised in contemporary Japan. The comedy in S1 is some of the funniest I’ve seen in any anime, this season has really flopped comedicallywhich is crazy given Alas Ramus should have provided ample room for even more comedy.

It’s a great premise of a show and still a franchise that’s one of my favorites for it so I will finish it in honor of the incredible original work, but it will continue to be painful to push through.

I really don't know how to feel about this season. I don't remember much of the first season, but I can point out a multitude of things for this season with the horrid animation (obviously), how fast and jumbled together the story feels, and how the character interactions feel, among other things.

Yeah this episode looked mega jank. Didn't really have any complaints about the art style for this first 3 episodes but this was something else. Well I guess the kid is sticking around as her sword for a while. That makes a bit more sense they won't always have to deal with a child following them around restricting the sort of things they can write.

The quality of the animation seems to get worse by each episode. Normally it doesn't bother me that much but this episode had some scenes where it got so bad(especially the facial expressions) that even I was bothered by it.

While I do prefer the artstyle for the original series, For the 3 episodes that we had, I was in the camp that thought that the newer artstyle was still decent and wasn't as bad as other were making it out to be. Sadly, after this episode, it's becoming almost impossible to defend it for much longer.

Most of the wonky visuals and animation were in the action scenes between Emilia and Gabriel, but even the non-action scenes had some shots where the character's looked off-model. When the likes of Boruto's average filler episodes look better, both in terms of non-action as well as action scenes, then it doesn't paint a pretty picture for the production values that we have for this series.

Aside from all of those issues, the episode's contents itself was still decent. I enjoyed the little story that Maou made up for Alas Ramus and the visuals that went with it and Gabriel's appearances did give me a good laugh with the way he acts.

I can only hope and pray that the production values improve from here on out...

That's a sick prank from Emilia. Satan already told her the story of how his parents died, yet she thinks he doesn't know the pain of losing someone that she lied about Alas Ramus.

Post-credits featuring Sarue:
So Emilia's mother is not only alive (if she is that white-haired woman from the amusement park) but is also the angel that saved Satan's life and gave him a fragment of Yesod to grow?

What happened with everyone's faces this episode? They all looked so deformed and goofy.

So Emi's mother is the angel who helped Maou and indirectly turned him into a tyrant, huh? Well, that's dramatic.

Not that the quality was super impressive in the first place, but, especially during the fighting, it dipped.

Between Emi's confession to Alas Ramus and the reveal with her heritage at the end, did this episode just confirm MaouxEmi?

As much as I enjoyed this episode, a lot more than the previous ones for that matter, I do feel as though that Alas Ramus' "farewell" was a bit of a copout. I was actually more excited when I thought she was done being in this for a bit. I figured it would be reason enough to force everyone to change gears.

If nothing else, this episode showed that Maou needs to start finding a way to get at least, some, power back.

I will say the animation was quite poor, as someone who doesn't usually notice bad animation, or simply doesn't care I was surprised that even I noticed it.

Alas Ramus disappearing had me genuinely upset, then I ended up like Maou crying when she appeared again. Gotta say though, that was a really impressive bluff.

Emilia might have to kill Maou with Alas Ramus, I really wonder how shes going to react to that.
