Hello, everyone! I am usually someone who's suggesting anime/manga to others in the Anime & Manga Recommendations forum, and I wasn't really thinking about opening a thread because I often find lots of new anime/manga to watch/read through others' suggestions on threads all over MyAnimeList. But this time, I guess I'll finally open up a thread and be the one who is looking for something. Do you guys know of any anime/manga that has something like learning to value life? It doesn't have to be slice of life, and it doesn't have to be completely wholesome—if you've seen my lists, you'll see that I like dark stories as much as light stories. It can be anything (as long as it follows the specifications that I'll get to in a bit) that has this theme or something that's a lesson for the characters and perhaps for the audience. I have a few specifications, stuff that I like but isn't necessary for recommendations and stuff that is a complete turn-off for me: + Magical girl + Iyashikei + Character development + Coming-of-age stories would be nice + I do not mind children's anime/manga + I do not mind recommendations tackling heavier topics (e.g. depression, suicide, divorce, etc.) + Preferably finished/complete series - No NSFW/Ecchi/Harem (sorry, I'm just not into sexual content) - No incest or age-gap relationships, please - I don't really want Isekai titles, but I might make exceptions if the recommendation is actually good and has this theme - Not really into overpowered main characters, but again I might make exceptions You can also check my anime list or my manga list if you want to see what kind of series I like. If there's anything on my Plan To Watch or Plan To Read lists that have appreciating life as a theme, please feel free to let me know as well. Thank you for reading, and I look forward to see what you guys find! |

How about hanada shounen-shi ? I think it meets all your criterias. Basically a kid from the countryside who has no consideration for others and constantly try to tease and annoy everyone. After being hit by a truck, he manages to survive but it turns out he can see ghosts and will have to help them move on the afterlife. Through their contacts, he manages to learn a new facet of people he didn't like before and gradually changes from a brat to someone who cherishes life and try to take care of others. It's mostly comedic and a sweet slice of life but also has a range of heavier topics I think you would like. |

I just completed Colorful today and I guess it may fit what you want It tackles things such as depression, suicide, feeling of unable to fit in, coming of age, and family drama in general. Perhaps you won't see much character development but from the main guy though since this is a movie. https://myanimelist.net/anime/8142/Colorful_Movie |

Wow!! Before I dive into this, I gotta thank you for such a large list! I'm currently giving the original manga of Anonymous Noise a shot (found the first three volumes at the library before I opened up this thread), so if I like it so far, I'll probably add the anime to my list. School-Live's "dark side" is very spoilable (MAL's synopsis even spoils it), but I will still consider it since it's been a show I've been thinking about watching ever since I heard about its hype (also I see lots of Madoka recommendations for it lol). K-ON's super popular and super cute, been considering that one, too. Been meaning to read Orange's manga, but for some reason I keep forgetting it exists (thanks for the reminder). Not a huge fan of how Children Who Chase Lost Voices looks too much like a Ghibli rip-off, but I'll still give it a try (I mean, the only Shinkai movie I watched is Your Name, so I guess I gotta check out his other stuff amirite?). Grave of the Fireflies is one of the few Ghibli movies I have yet to watch. Read the first volume of A Silent Voice's manga, I think I'll want to finish the manga first before I give the movie a shot since the manga looks so good. Haven't heard about Alice and Zouroku, Anima Yell!, Tari Tari, The Anthem of the Heart, and A Letter to Momo before though! They all look nice, I think I'll put a good amount of this into my list. Thanks much! Iyya said: I just completed Colorful today <snip> Perhaps you won't see much character development but from the main guy though since this is a movie. Character development isn't a requirement, just something I like to see a lot lol. But yeah, thanks for the recommendation! Sounds like the kind of thing I'd like to watch, and the MAL pic looks super beautiful! Saki said: For anime, on your PTW list I see Sora yori mo Tooi Basho, you should really watch that I feel like you would really like it! Bokurano-Oh so very much The Ancient Magus Bride- Despite the synopsis a major theme is teaching Chise to love living. I've been reading the manga and have only watched the prequel, but I hear the anime was a good adaptation. Natsume's Book of Friends- A lot of people compare it to Mushishi actually, and its my favorite series featuring youkai. |

This might not be an direct way of "appreciating life", but rather one of the best things about life—human emotion. That manga would be "Kyou no Cerberus", although you would need to resist the waifu baits first. The manga is about a man who had lost euphoric emotions and is on a mission to recover them. Now that you mention it—I would also need to know more about animanga concerning... well... Life. Life. |

If you take "appreciating life" to a literal then Vinland Saga and Vagabond are a manga that truly does that. they got complex character and character development, interesting side character, detailed and realistic style of art (especially Vagabond). although some of its part/arc are going to feels a little drag out. but nevertheless i think the journey pays at the end. Another one is Beastar but i cannot actually know how to describe it. |

Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou is a post-apocalyptic iyashikei where these two girls, Chito and Yuuri, walk around a multilayered city in the middle of the ocean. This city and life after the apocalypse is all they know. They don't worry, they don't despair, all they do is scavenge for food and get excited over everyday things. Music, pictures, a diary, new tastes, like chocolate, cheese and potato, meeting people, even just seeing any living creatures aside from them. It's an interesting world with good worldbuilding, characters whose excitement makes me appreciate the small things in life, and a calming overall feel, like an iyashikei should have. I don't worry because they don't worry. I get happy because they get happy. Also, they dab in the op |

In the time since you created this thread there's been a couple of titles I've watched that I'd say are worth a good look. Both of these are about appreciating life as it happens, have rural scenery porn and are simply great SoL shows at their core. Amanchu! -- Iyashikei about a shy city girl moving to a rural coastal town and meeting new friends. Akebi-chan no Sailor-fuku -- If there's a better example of showcasing those halcyon school-girl days I'd wanna know what it is because this is a gem of a show visually and comfy-wise. The protag Akebi is one of those protag characters that uplifts everyone around her. I'm gonna mention the visuals again because they really are exceptional. Even the animation for this SoL is amazing: the skirts and hair swish around realistically, the sunlight effects are gorgeous, etc. The interiors of the school was to die for. I did find some of the characters' eye designs a bit weird (rather wide-spaced and droopy) but kinda got used to it. |

I wanted to recommend Please Save My Earth in the flower thread, but it can fit this request too. https://myanimelist.net/manga/655/Boku_no_Chikyuu_wo_Mamotte I know I recommended this manga before, but I forgot it had anything to do with flowers. The Moon characters all have obscure Japanese names representing flowers. A Japanese woman recently told me she had no idea "shuukaidou" was even the name of a flower! Mokuren can make plants grow by singing to them. This and the manga's reincarnation plot premise show off the beauty of our universe and its life. |
