Why is it so rare for anime girls to have acrylic nail arts?

Totally not making this thread due to the Marin bandwagon but,

Let's actually talk about this. A lot of Japanese girl I frequently see on instagram among the age of 16-30s really do love posting either:
1. Their newly made acrylic nails, or
2. Their purikura booth session.
This kind of meticulously decorated nails is bigger in Japan than any other countries from what I observe.

I mean, even regular nail polish is kinda uncommon in anime as well, but acrylic is especially ultra rare (other than Marin, the only other character I know to put that is Suzuka Dairenji from Tokyo Ravens). They're still very rare even if you discount anime that isn't set in modern Japan (since we can consider this to be a "Japan pop culture thing"). I don't understand why in this case of thing, anime isn't (mostly) a form of art that imitates life. What do you think about this?

P.S I hope you guys don't get annoyed with me keep creating threads about nails because I do realize that I have made a lot of it. And before you ask some of that weird shit, yes, I admit that I have a very particular fascination with nail arts, thank you.

It's hard enough to animate hands as it is, but you want them to put some extra detail on the nails that would be either invisible, or transform whenever the hand is visible? I think the answer is clear to me.

  1. It's hard to animate.
  2. Distance 2nd... it doesn't show up enough in moe databases. Not enough people have fingernail fetishes to make it worthwhile.

It's for the same reason anime characters never have intricate designs on their shirts.

Haven't seen a thread that has been this thoroughly ended by the first post in a while. But yeah, what he said.
I probably regret this post by now.

Anime girls are generally made to appeal to guys. Fancy fingernail polishes and acrylics are mostly something girls do for themselves. I think the majority of guys are either ambivalent or dislike them.

I hate long nails, I find them boorish and disgusting. A woman should look delicate and cute and they are the very opposite of that. Long nails are a social construct anyway, they were never "feminine".

Manga is black and white mostly so colored nails are almost never a thought.

Its generally very difficult to animate small intricate details like this, same reason why armored soldiers are often done in CGI. I don't see any reason for studios to waste enormous amounts of labor to add this specific detail unless the manga itself has it for the character design.

Apart from the difficulty of animating it, I think it's more of a staple for gyaru, no? Maybe not in real life but definitely in Japan's pop culture.

In terms of allocation of time, budget and production resources, additional details like clothing and accessory aren't given priorities unless they contribute to the theme (e.g. fashion, beauty). Otherwise think of them as an afterthought or gloss for companies who have enough time and money to go a little extra.

This seems like one of those things, that would make the animators working on the series, say: 'Screw it!' and jump out of the window.

Really complicated to animate. That's about it.

This is a good answer. I guess yeah it would need a lot of extra effort for them then.

But cute, or boorish is also a social construct. I mean, I personally found it to be cute and kind of want one myself.

Not really? I believe like 97% of Japanese girls on instagram loves doing that. Gyaru is just...have doing the thing for longer time, probably ever since the existence of the subculture. From actual idol group members, celebgrams, tiktoker, Youtuber, Twitcasters, Maid cafe employee or just employee in pop district in general like Akiba, I got recommended with different Japanese girls posting their new acrylic nails and purikura booth sessions almost everyday on Instagram.

Projecting much😂 A woman doesn’t have to look a certain way for example a woman can go gym and work out but still look beautiful even though she looks less “feminine” according to your tastes. Sounds like you’re stuck in the past my man.

Yeah, but I mean more the perception in Japan's popular culture and anime stereotypes, nail arts like those are usually associated with gyaru, even if "normal" girls do that a lot as well. In fact gyaru are virtually the only characters I've seen with coloured nails in anime.

Projecting what? I have my own expectations of the ideal woman, women have their own so why can't I? I never said I don't like women going to the gym but ok.

Long and/or painted nails are gross.

Nobody wants to look at that stuff, so why even bother drawing it?

I like it a lot though, especially 3D nails. To each on their own I guess.

You know, I never thought about that. Fake nails must suck, but I don't see why you couldn't animate nails of just a different color.

The only character I can think of is Junko Enoshima, and they had to take her design from the Danganronpa games for the anime. They just made her nails red as they were. Painted nails seem like such an easy way to add personality to a character.

I personally think that nails too long are kinda disgusting. Marins are at the very edge of what's ok
