How do you handle an anime you haven't seen in awhile?

Do you A) Start the series over again from scratch to refresh your memory? Or B) Pick up where you left off?

Yes, awhile could mean any amount of time, but really, what I'm talking about here is at least more than five months.

Only in rare cases do I ever feel the need to start a series over again from scratch. Like say I'm all caught up on the anime and there are no more sequels out. At that point, I'd continue it from the manga. But sometimes, I don't pick up where I left off. Though that only happens if I liked the show enough. And when I say liked it, I have to really, really like it. So yeah. Rare case.

There's also that time where I went through my worst and only burn out, where I let about three hundred episodes of my number one favorite anime, One Piece, stack. Yeah, it was bad. At that point, I didn't feel like it would be right to pick up where I left off, so I started it over with the manga (originally only watched the anime). Of course, I still do watch the anime. I do both.

Like I've stated before in previous threads, I may not have the best memory in the world, but it's not enough to make me want to go back and start all over again. I want to keep up with the latest (not for fandom reasons). Besides, I don't think it's possible to retain every little detail inside of your head (unless you have photographic memory). Plus, I feel like when I get back into it after a good, long pause, all those memories will come flooding back to me anyway. Maybe I won't get all the details, but hey, I'll get something.

Generally I can pick up right where I left off without issue. *Sometimes* though (like I did recently with the non anime series Man In The High Castle it had been like 2 years so I just started it over from scratch). I'm weird in that I have about 90% photographic memory for certain things. My first memories go back to when I was a year old in 1979. I can still recall the most minute details of stuff. But I couldn't tell you what I did 6 weeks ago at times too, ask me 8 years from now and I could tell you what I did 6 weeks ago. My mind doesn't work in a straight line. It's why school was such a bitch for me. I have quasi photographic memory but it's latent for awhile, usually something absorbed couldn't be recalled in time for a lot of tests... ask me the same material years later and I know it. I learn with the subconscious mind not the conscious mind.

I had a anime series on hold for like 9 months, went right into it where I left off. No recaps, no redos. Think it also has to do with where I'm at emotional/spiritually too. If I'm melancholy FORGET IT.

It depends on how much I care about the show

I'll re-watch Mob Psycho when the next season comes, but I won't re-watch Jujutsu Kaisen
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

Watch more movies, please.

Perhaps, this is hell.

Depends how long it's been since I've seen it and how well I remember it.

Also how long the show is and how important the plot is/how much previous events matter to the future plot.

Generally I won't rewatch it all but on occasion I will.

Here is where recap episodes are your friends.
You can also read a plot summary, or Wikipedia episode lists up to the point you stopped. Being careful not to peek below that point if you are worried about spoilers.

I always just start over. That way i can experience it all at once.
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

I tend to start at the beginning if it's been awhile. I don't want anything from the plot to slip by me.

this happened to me 3 weeks ago when I had not watched hunter hunter in a month and a half. I had to read the comments of the last episode to remember what was going on (Crunchyroll not 9anime or whatever) so I either do that or I just piece together what happened last episode by memory. sometimes I will re-watch the last episode so I know the current events of the show.

I face difficulty when it comes to restarting the series I put on hold for a few years. I don't have a good memory.

If I remember mostly what happened, I'll continue from where I last watched to.

But if not, I will restart.

Oh so you mean holding for a while? I start it all over again from the beginning if it's something that really interest me, if not I just catch it from where I left off, or drop it.

I usually pick up where I left off. With shows like One Piece and Death Note, though, I'll be starting those from the beginning since it's been close to a year since I've seen them.

If it's not I love, as for ex. I am a big fan of Bleach so for me it isn't a trouble to re-watch it (but this example is also bad as I know the whole anime plot from memory excluding the fillers obviously). So instead of re-watching I would usually look at some popular channels reaction at 1.5-2.0 to refresh what happened in nutshell in the previous season.

This is exactly the problem I faced with aot. I binged aot to season 4 part 1 a few month ago, and waited for part 2 to come out, which it did. However since I watched it wayyyy too fast, I forgot a lot of details and can't even connect it with the current airing part 2 of season 4. Thats why I stopped watching it for now, and I probably will search videos that summarise the aot story. As for now, I can't understand what is happening lol

Depends on how much I care about the show I would probably rewatched it. Like I would probably rewatch Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan but not Kimetsu no Yaiba, or I would just watch a recap episode.

this is a problem I have never found a satisfactory answer to, aside from starting from the beginning. though with long running series like One Piece and Hunter x Hunter I can resume wherever I left off.

kinda depends how far I got in. Like The Ancient Magus' Bride bounced back onto my Plan to Watch list after moving from Watching to On Hold, because I'm just gonna start from the beginning (and watch sub rather than dub lol), and I only got about six episodes in. plus the tree dragon episode is so fucking good I wouldn't mind watching it again.

It depends on how balls deep I am in the show. If I've only watched 1 season out of 4 + 2 movies (etc.), then I would probably restart the series and watch again from the start. If I missed out on a couple of movies or specials, or extra episodes, then I would just continue.

For series I've 100% completed, I leave them alone until I have a strong urge to rewatch them, or if I read the manga/LN afterwards. My ratings stand until I rewatch something.

If I remember big enough details, I'll continue. If I can't even name a single character, it's probably in my best interest to just start over

Depends on the anime.

Good example is 86 part 2. It thankfully gets a recap episode so that me and my watching partner don't need restart the series completely to see how it went.

And I have rewatched several anime (like Shokugeki no Souma aka Food Wars, when the last season came out, I rewatched the entire series cause I enjoyed it) and it had been awhile.

But it really depends on what anime and how much time was between it.

If I can't pick it up from where I left I just watch back a couple of episides only just to refresh before unfamiliar territory.

If it has a maximum of 24 - 26 episodes, start from the beginning.

If it has more than that, continue where I left off.

Start from scratch.

I'm like that with everything, it's a real problem, lol. My friends are annoyed with how long it takes me to finish stuff (if I finish it at all!), because I keep starting over games, books, anime, etc. as soon as I haven't touched them for a few months x)

But I also don't have the focus to just go through something in one go unless it's really short, so it keeps happening...
My limit is roughly 300 hours of engaging with a certain piece of media, but because I never stay on track, those are usually used up before I reach the end. Like watching half an anime for 30 hours and then running off to fandom land to gush about headcanons and read fanfics for the remaining 270h before I grow bored of the franchise and leave for 2 years. Or playing a videogame so thoroughly that I hit 300 hours played after only one third of the story, and then stopping because nothing interesting has happened yet.

But when I return, I want the full immersive experience so I can't just start over right in the middle of it~

I chose B, continued where I left off, it's impossible to start over again it's too much time wasting, I don't watch much anime & most of the anime I watch are short anime (12 episodes), so I still remember it.
