What does "overrated" and "underrated" mean to you?

When expressing an "overrated" or "underrated" opinion, do you hold much weight to it? Like, do you genuinely believe that the shows you love aren't fairly received in ratings as well as shows that you dislike? Or is it just that they're under-watched? For me personally, I try to avoid threads asking for overrated opinions since I believe some shows have their own audience. I am of course more likely to respond to underrated threads. But even then, I'm not implying that some shows deserve higher ratings compared to others. I just believe some shows don't have as much of a following or people that talk about them. But that's just me. What are your thoughts?

Edit: Forum title changed to avoid confusion.

Well, oversimplifying:
Poplular does not mean Overrated. A popular anime can be popular because IT'S actually good, presents refreshing ideas and has an interesting and engaging story.

Overrated does not mean Trash. Sure, there are several anime I think they're ranked way higher than they should be but many of them aren't bad at all, mostly of them are decent/good, but not great.

Obscure/Forgotten does not mean Underrated: There could be the case in where an anime stopped being popular, but was very talked about in its peak popularity era. Watching old anime after it stops being highly popular is a relatively common niche, but that doesn't make your tastes better than anyone else.

Underrated does not mean Masterpiece. As I stated in the "Overrated does not mean Trash" point, the opposite applies perfectly.

No, but overhyped does. A lot of instances of "overrated" should be more precisely called "overhyped". Hype overinflates people's expectations which may also cause much bigger disappointment when you don't get what you expected/wanted.

it's true that these terms have lost most of their meaning, which comes from people constantly misusing these and confounding them with other connotations.

a simple example would be the use of overrated as if it means the show is shit, despite that very clearly not being the literal definition, the same goes with underrated as an amazing hidden gem, though that shouldn't mean that logically.

having said that, i still use these terms and try to do so as properly as possible and in a very literal, straightforward manner. for instance, and this may trigger people before reading all of it, but i consider steins gate to be an overrated anime. that does not mean i think it's shit, in fact, i think it's very good, or great even, but in my personal opinion, the consensus surrounding it and its rating are overblown, i rated it a bit lower than its rating on MAL and do not consider it a contender for best anime of all time under any circumstances, so to me it's overrated, which isn't an insult to the show, but a disagreement with its reception on average.

conversely, an example for this approach but with something underrated per say, can be something like millenium actress, that contrary to how people frequently use the term underrated, this movie is very well received and popular enough among the crowd that is into anime like this (though under this literal approach to these terms, popularity is irrelevant), but it would still be underrated from my perspective, as it is rated lower than what i personally believe it deserves.

so to sum all of this up, yes, overrated and underrated do mean something, at least to me, in the way that i specified on how i use them, though i completely understand where you are coming from and usually roll my eyes when other people throw these terms around, in what i consider very unfitting contexts, while also having a similar apprehension to such threads as you mentioned.

Underrated = "I like it"
Overrated = "I dislike it"

Here you go, that's what it means, at least that's what 99.9% of people mean when they say it.
Like people can straight up call a show that's in top 50 in both popularity and rating "underrated", and the likelihood of that increases if the show is actually bad.

I mean, my anime list is public, so you could check which highly rated and popular shows I trashed.
Though admittedly I've also dropped some after a couple episodes, with no hard feelings attached, just because found them boring.

The more popular an anime* is, the more it will be watched by newcomers, who rate everything higher because everything is still new to them. That's the correlation that makes popular anime overrated and underwatched ones underrated. Good or bad doesn't matter.

In discourse today, no, not really. On here, it generally means :

Over-rated = something I don't enjoy that a lot of others do
Under-rated = something I enjoy that not a lot of others do

I use them as subjective terms to describe a discrepancy between my opinion of a show and the broader consensus in both its score and popularity--not something to take too seriously. Some people like to use them as objective terms, which is silly and requires lots of effort to justify (to no avail, at that), and some people think the words shouldn't be used at all, which is even sillier because it presumes everyone to be in the former group.

Overrated means - "I don't like it as much as the others do".
Underrated means - "I like it more than the others do".

Is it that hard to understand?

I know the meaning of the terms. I just wanted to understand whether or not people used them to imply an issue with a show's following or it's actual ratings. Maybe the thread title made it confusing. But there are some people who put a lot of emphasis on ratings, and I just don't know how they can come to the conclusion that an anime is rated too high or too low just based on opinions.

Overrated just means that general consensus is higher than my own assessment and underrated just means the opposite. Something could be a 9 and underrated or a 2 and overrated if my assessment is that it should be a 10 or a 1 respectively

Overrated/underrated are relative terms. If I say a score is overrated it is overrated relative to something else otherwise the term is meaningless. In most instances people say overrated/underrated relative to their personal opinion/enjoyment. The poster doesn't often say it but that is the implication unless they state otherwise.

But I suppose you could say a series is underrated if the critics give an anime a low score but the show ended up becoming a commercial success. Overrating would be applicable if critics raved the show but it didn't too well on sales. Whatever way you use these terms you are comparing one score (the MAL score) with something else. Naturally if someone comes up with this show being overrated you should ask them what is it overrated relative against?

According to my MalGraph stats, it seems I do believe that there are way more overrated anime than there are underrated anime. And yup, "overrated" and "underrated" do indeed have meaning. As for whether these two terms have any weight to them, that would depend on how they're being used imo.

Overrated = when an anime is rated way higher than what one believes it should be rated.
Underrated = when an anime is rated way lower than what one believes it should be rated.

I know a lot of people don't like when they see “overrated/underrated,” but I personally don't mind. I care more about how the terms are being used, as well as what one's statements and explanations are when saying “overrated/underrated.”

Overrated

For example, once upon a time when it came out, I skipped "Puella Magi Madoka Magica". Then years passed and I got to hear people in forums and YouTube discussing it, so I figured I'd enjoy it if I got around to it.

Underrated

"Ex-Arm" I admit I never watched it. However judging by the cover art, I thought I'd like it. Then I watched The anime man, Gigguk and Connor's opinion on it, which included scenes from the anime. I assume you can imagine what followed. Yup I just skipped it and felt as though I dodged a bullet.

Just going to use the MAL rating system on this one because I'm too lazy to think about it more deeply:

overrated = anime above 8 that I found average or maybe worse e.g, Attack on Titan

underrated = anime below 7 that I found great if not a masterpiece e.g, Gundam Reconguista in G

Overrated - Anime that's popular but isn't as good as/takes attention away from series people like.

Underrated - A good series but people just missed out on it or never watched it.

Personally, i hate "Overrated", just because you hate something doesn't mean it's bad and everyone else should hate it too.

But underrated, i feel the opposite. It does suck to see something you like not get recognized or get the attention it deserves.

When I think of those terms I think of them as a kind of grey area not absolutes. For example overrated to me means the show might be somewhat entertaining. Not a masterpiece.
Likewise with underrated it might be bad but I also might really enjoy it...So I guess I think of them kind of like a general consensus before I check something out myself.

Overrated- Popular anime with a lot of praise that is (imo) either average as hell or just plain terrible

Underrated- Relatively unknown anime or anime no one ever seems to talk about (general rule of thumb, in my book of personal rules, is that if it has over 75,000 users it's NOT underrated. This is my opinion and my definition of underrated, anyway. It's evolved into this because I get so f-ing tired of people saying things like like HxH or FMAB or Gintama or SNK are underrated. I would rather give two examples; Overrated would be something I consider to be common and uninspiring, not necessarily bad but not necessarily good either, but somehow receive a lot of praise for being accessible. On the other hand, Underrated would be something I consider creative and unique, but receive a lot less than it originally deserved perhaps because it lacked accessibility in its exposure.

I get a feeling something is underrated if i personally enjoyed it and the rating is kinda good on the ranking sites but it rarely ever gets mentioned but if it does usually very positive. If that happens in the relevant spaces like mal or /a/ than it is not unlikely that it is indeed underrated and far more people would watch and enjoy it. For overrated i feel like it let my opinion weigh more. I cant completely get over my disdain for some series and what they did with my time

Overrated: Something that's rated higher than it should be.
Underrated: Something that's rated lower than it should be.

I think that these two words are the peak of subjectivity because, in the absence of a specific "rating system," supporters and opponents argue and never come to a conclusion.
