I don't think there's anything stopping me from being able to make physical contact with rodents. I would probably avoid it, though since I don't want to catch some nasty disease, unless it is something like a pet mouse. |

Pet ones yes but I wouldn't touch a wild one. I also wouldn't touch a unfamiliar cat or dog without its owner nearby either. |

No. Rats don't exist where I live (Alberta) but I am still confident in saying that I would never ever touch one |

the last time we had a rat problem, i baited and killed a rat using crackers and a rat trap. upon scooping the body into the dust pan, the fur looked very soft, much like that of a pet. rats can be pets. fuck no i would never touch mice or rats with my bare hands |

Sure. To be honest I would be more worried about why that person's thumbnail doesn't cover the majority of the end of their thumb. Mine look like talons in comparison from not over clipping. |

I would never touch a stray one, since it's likely aggressive and infectious. But pet ones? I actually did and do regularly! They're fun and social little critters! I scratch them, pet them, and handle them, which doesn't harm them or me. |

I don't see why not - provided I know that the mouse/rat is healthy and not a disease carrier. |

It depends, if they're pets then yeah, if they're wild I'd prefer to avoid touching it tho, if I, for some reason, had to grab it then I might do |

I'll be honest, I kinda understand why people find rats/mice scary or disgusting. The pink hands (and worse, hand-feets) and the scaly wiggling tail are at the same time too human-looking and too alien for comfort... But I just find them absolutely adorable =^_^=. I have no problem petting rodents like that. I currently have a couple of mice and a rat living in my garden. They're cute. I enjoy watching them explore the garden for food, then run fast af back to their holes with their prize. They're so fast and shiny and fluffy (^: I'm somewhat concerned I'd end up with a shitload of mice, but it's been a year or so, and I didn't see any baby mice. I did see a barn owl looking at me through the window in the middle of the night tho (Thx for the scarejump, nature), so I'm pretty sure at worst I'll get a family of cute barn owls under the roof xD |

You should always touch wild rats. They often feel lonely due to society's bigoted ostracism. Don't forget to pet this little buddy too. It's even lonelier. |

I feel this is a big town problem. If I wanted to pet the rodents in my garden, I think I'd be there for a while xD. Unless it's a hedgehog or something (hedgehogs are so cute too :o If you see one on the road please help him cross it <3 He'll be a bit scarred but that's better than getting flattened, and if you don't nuzzle him you should be tick-free afterwards... hopefully ) |

Only if they're pets. I wouldn't trust picking up the wild ones, they'd most likely bite me out of defence (understandable) and who knows what kind of germs they're carrying around. |

Sure if it's a pet otherwise I try to keep distance. I actually only have seen shrews here but there is supposed to be some mice in my area. No fair. Instead I have a hugely fat woodchuck that I saw in my front yard waddling along before. Groundhods that also aren't particularly cute just funny looking and never see them easily. Then squirrels that are too quick to really look at. I managed to get bit by a tick without knowing it without even touching any wild animals. They wait to get on you from the top of grass. I only knew this occured after I had a sudden problem one day then got diagnosed with lyme disease after bloodwork. |

I cover my garden with hay/dead leaves/etc for winter, and I grabbed a gigantic hedgehog chilling in my dead leaves this autumn. Ouch :'^) Damn... I'm sorry :c. You've been unlucky. I've been bitten by ticks a lot when growing up, always took them off myself without worrying. Only recently did I get one bite that turned bad. After a couple days it was red and itchy, I ran to the first drugstore to get antibiotics. I should probably get checked too just to be sure... |

They can be kinda cute but they are weird. I have holes on my property that make me suspect a groundhog may live here but never saw one. Im just naming rodents though. I have plenty of other wildlife at my house such as deer, rabbits (rarely get to see them), foxes, black bear and what I assume was two bobcats run a few feet past me. Rest is a bit off topic now so spoilering it Not all antibiotics are equal they work on different strains of bacteria and you need to take appropriate amount of time so you maybe should be checked for tick borne disease. I was put on doxycycline which is the standard and on for longer than the American standard of treatment time more closer to the standard used elsewhere i somehow managed to get. But I questioned doxycyclines effectiveness from a study i read so I did my own additions to the treatment using natural stuff I thought may help from studies i read. The European variety of the bacteria that leads to lyme is worse than the American because it produces The American variety it's just all from immune response. Anyway what happened was I had partial facial paralysis. I couldnt even blink on one side. Got back to normal in about a week but pretty shit experience because it could have lasted for much longer and I didn't know how long it would take. |

Don't know of human retardation but the Black Death was related to rats. Surely the rats were chilling in towns to infect humans, and not because of inexistent waste/trash handling/recycling or notion of public hygiene at the time. There's a reason with towns get decimated by pandemics, and it's not rats or birds or whatever. It's the same thing with monoculture. But a disease in a small patch of cereals, np. Put a disease in a giant field of cereals, you strave to death the next winter. The way we organized our society is pretty much retarded af when it comes to long-term preservation and resilience against stuff like pandemics. If tomorrow a covid-19 appears but for wichever clone of wheat or corn is dominant around the world, we're fucked lol. And it won't be a disease's fault, but our own for planning like dumbasses. |

At least not wild ones and mentioning the plague back then, that doesn't even include the nasty worms and other parasites in wild animals you could get nowadays. Most might don't kill you, but eeh... I won't even pat a wild cat, because they often have nasty worms that could get into you by scratches and bites, and if I were pregnant I'd surely avoid doing the cat toilet because of toxoplasmosis. And then there is rabies in wild animals. It's extincted in Middle and Northern Europe, but not in other places of the world. So yeah... maybe don't touch wild animals. Should be common sense. Or animals you don't know, if they are well-groomed or not, in general. |

For the one thing yes but anything else it's hard to tell because lyme disease can cause such wide symptoms and can take years to happen once infected I may have other effects from it. It can cause joint problems and mental health problems are among some more common ones. Black bear are less aggressive than grizzly bears but they also can be aggressive especially if they have babies near by. That said I have walked out to the porch briefly while two were walking around the driveway and nothing happened but they didnt seem to notice me.
