For me , the anime of the year is just an anime that came out in the year and gave me the best watching experience and made me fall in love with it irrespective of its objective quality in relation to other anime.
And that anime is Ousama Rankings.
It just encapsulates everything that a fantasy story should be , to me , at least. It takes me back to my childhood years when I'd consume all these fantasy story picture books and the fantastical stories my granny would tell me every night before she'd sing me to sleep. It just reciprocates all the awe and wonder I'd feel for the fantastical elements in a story. From the story ,the characters to its very distinct artstyle ( which is again ,nostalgic to me) it brings back my childhood . I really love the artstyle and the fact that wit animates it is a plus.
I love how it makes the main character very human and inherently imperfect. He is an underdog in his own story and the fact that he is portrayed as smaller in size in relation to the other characters could be a visual representation of the way he perceives himself in the world that surrounds him. The kingdom's people mocks and laughs at him , everything just rejects his very being . His aim to become the king might just be him trying to validate his existence and a cry, a want to be accepted.
He is physically impaired but then his zeal and his unshakable conviction shines through and that's what I love about him. He also has a unique charisma that only we ,the audience can see , that we learn of throughout the story and allows us to emotionally invest in our mc. His own characters portrays human imperfection and our ugly flaws . Society around him rejects him due to his physique and impairments. All of us have things that we'd like to change and maybe that will give us happiness . When the mc tries to push himself despite his limitations and start working towards breaking his limits ,we support and cheer for him. Because it's inherently human to want to strive for the better and we see that in the mc . We love him because we also want to be better than our present selves , we may have limits but we don't want them to limit us and our potential. And when we see someone striving towards proving his mettle we get inspired . And that's what this story teaches me , to strive and sweat and push myself believing in the people that supports me and celebrating our inherent desire for the better.
I am hopelessly and undeniably very much in love with the show and I hope it only gets better
