THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Romeo and Juliet being a theme of the episode is pretty the most iconic thing in this type of the show.

It looks like the students wants to get more of their practice lessons. I don't find it surprising since a lot of them have high expectations for themselves.

So this episode starts the sequel manga's (Kageki Shoujo!!) adaptation.

Glad that the Kouka class is coming along well, and happy birthday Sarasa. Your 16 rose gift is definitely from your father, not your boyfriend Akira. And Ai can sense jealousy since Sarasa is the first friend she made, she does the same thereafter.

A change in curriculum, and the preparation for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet for Andou's class. Problem is, everything is completely ad-libbed to the original script, and not for any literal reason since Andou-sensei wants to test the girls of their capabilities to play the 2 lead roles, Tybalt and Juliet's nurse. Ai, Sarasa, Kaoru Hoshino and Chika Sawada are one group.

Kaoru's character story, coming from a family line of Kouka performers, it's understandable of her high standards in any act. Ai coming in to sympathize with her, there's some hostilities, but there's no time to waste for their talents to come together for practice. And the day of the performance, even with a few hiccups, with the power of imagination, they barely made it though with their different strikes.

Whatever it is, Andou-sensei has given these 4 girls some good advice, and that's all for now of their capabilities based on critique. There's a lot to take in.

Let’s Goooo, Ai chan finally got to call Sarasa by her first name, really proud of her. Loving her medium hair look too. I was surprised to see Sarasa had a bf considering how ditzy she is. I thought the performance was pretty good, but damn, sensei saying that Sarasa would never be a top star at Kouka was harsh. Looking forward to seeing how she bounces back from that.

Finally! Finally! Ai called Sarasa's first name, Sarasa. And, how she is not able to read kanji might lead to some problems in the future as well. It looks like there might be some drama between the twins.
At this point, Sarasa will not able to be a top star by copying others' performances, she must find her own performing way.

Are you seriously?! I knew Sarasa had a male love interest, but this is the first time I hear of shoujo, where a female MC has a formal romantic partner without much drama.

No problem, I'm just positively impressed by the fact that this is literally the second shoujo author in my memory who does not make romance overly important in a show that is not dedicated to it.

This was the most stable episode, not having a shocking happening. But a good episode nonetheless.

I never get tired of seeing Sarasa sheep-like bed hair.

The critique of Sarasa performance. I believe will be that basic anime line "The copy never will be like the real deal, you need to make your own technique " or whatever. Seeing the method Sarasa used to get the head in the game.

Cool to see some of the main girls actually perform this episode.

Sarasa really is the acting version of Hinata with how eerie she looks when studying her character while still being upbeat, a little dense, and passionate about her craft. She gave a really good performance and the anime did a great job representing that with the dramatic camera work and character acting. I’ll bet that the teacher said that comment at the end to Sarasa because she is only mimicing performances right now and not involving her own style.

I'm sure there is reasoning behind it, but I wish they'd stop seemingly trying to crush the brightest spark of this entire show in Sarasa. I get she needs to learn a few things, but jfc.

I'm loving the smooth transitions between lighthearted moments and serious ones, especially scenes with the twins.

People need to stop being skeptical about this show. In Japan, the manga has been well acclaimed, while the anime hit twitter trending at #5 after episode 4. That's very impressive considering something as popular as Dragon Maid S only reached #6 (episode 1).

Its score has been going up significantly, from 6.94 (before episode 3) to 7.27 as of now, but still not a proper score.

Yo so that guy was Sarasa's boyfriend, that's great. Also congratz on turning 16 my girl.

The girls finally got to act and as expected it didn't go that well. Ai chan's non changing expression while acting was hilarious but Sarasa did a great job doing her part. Thou surprisingly the sensei said she can't be a top star. I'm guessing it's cause she mimics other's acting and doesn't use her own acting.

Getting to learn our cast a bit more; Kaoru is pretty harsh, but it’s because she feels a lot of pressure on her so takes that stress out on others, and they’re understanding of this but I wonder if she’ll probably have to learn to be a bit less harsh sooner or later. We also get a glimpse of a part of one of the twins, Chika, and I’m not sure what she’s holding back for, my guess is a history of being the second best twin, watching her sister shine while she’s hiding in the shadows. It’s a cutthroat line of work, so I suppose it can be good to accept backing parts, but when offered a larger one you should take it, looks like she’s got some stuff to work through. I look forward to continuing getting to know our cast next week :)

I enjoyed the comedy a lot this episode. The "expression" parts were pretty awesome lmao

I loved the romeo and juliet play and I can't help but be impressed by Sarasa's ability to change. But I was a little surprised when he said that at the end though...

I'm really liking this series

this, or maybe the influence kabuki has over her is so strong that she wouldn't be able to perform following Kouka's patterns. let's remember that modern kabuki is performed exclusively by men and she grew up watching and admiring it. also, maybe that's the reason why she wants to become a "otoko-yaku" star

Too many hiden gems in this season, i wonder why they are ignoring these good shows lately. If i'm talking about Japan, well Kageki Shoujo is quite popular now. Really this show need more attention, right?

About this episode well Sarasa looks like she is copying but still do her best to act like that. I wouldn't mind about Salasa and her boyfriend are having LDR, in the reality there are alot couples like that. Narata Ai complained about Salasa wasn't being a Romeo, yeah i kinda agree with you, Ai. For me Kaoru was more likely an antagonist there.

Love the fine balance of comedy and serious in this episode. Also enjoying how they are slowly expanding the story for all the characters, like Chika and Kaoru.

After 6 episodes, this show is definitely one of the bests of this season.

This was a pretty good episode, was surprised to hear that Sarasa of all people has a boyfriend lol. Andou-sensei's critique was irritating though. Yes I get it, Sarasa is copying other's performances and doesn't have her own style (yet), was it really necessary to crush her soul with the hamfisted drama at the end?

Oh, Watanabe's birthday. That bouquet of roses really nice. Looks like Naracchi trying hard to make her relationship with Watanabe closer, feeling competed with that present, which i seriously don't know what else to put that out. Still, hopefully she can say Sarasa for at least once, i dunno. The gift succeeded tho. That's good.

Next. The first-year class got a chance to rehearse the act for real. Watacchi and Naracchi at one group. Too bad those time, its not their chance to put a good dual performance. Well, at least the other girls had a bit more screen time and showed off her skills. But, once again, this episode everything back to Watanabe again.

Phantom-sensei evaluation kinda on point, especially to Naracchi. She needs to be more lovely using that role. But, for Watanabe, idk whats that Phantom-sensei really mean back there. Can not be the top star? Well, if the way role of the stage choose by jankenpon, then, ofc Watanabe will always be under the star.

Joking aside, maybe the next episode will explain it more clearly. But for now, lets stop it on a cliffhanger!

What he means is that doing impressions of what the other does will never be enough to be a star. To be an artist is to be able to express yourself not to just do what the others do. The episode was about the importance of the basics when dealing with arts, and how people who start involving themselves try to rush into the action while not understanding such. If you dont know the basics, if you dont know about the pieces that make art come together, you are not going to be anything but a copycat of what you have experienced before.

Anyways, a sweet episode. I loved how they switched to the teacher perspective while doing the acting and showing his thought process.

This is 100% something that could be derived from my ignorance of art schools and shit, but it is extremely recurrent to have teachers involved in art to be harsh in their critiques in media. If I could parallel this to another anime that I've seen before it could be Hibike Euphonium start, you could also see the same sort of hard critique in order to make the students react to awake them

So basically Sarasa is the Kakashi of this show lmao. I don't know why I did not expect this to delve into the acting aspect, but I'm very glad that the show did that. Curious to see how it will handle the development of the girls' acting skills from here on.

Also, the pacing is still kinda off. Could've used a montage or some other pacing tool to indicate the gap between the two weeks. But hey other than that, I've got no complaints.

Another really great episode! This is definitely one of my favorites show this season, it's so good I love it. So that dude is Sarasa's boyfriend, that's really cool, he needs to send a present too though, Dio is doing all the work lmao.

Naracchi is so adorable though, anything for her first friend. I wonder what Chika's problem is though, I think she's trying to lay low so she doesn't outshine her sister and give the spotlight to her, that's kind of sad.

Andou-sensei was definitely harsh in his words, but he was speaking facts. Sarasa will never be a top star unless she learns how to express the role she's playing without imitating others. This show also has such consistently good production values, the art and animation are great. Really looking forward to the next episode.

I'm in a pretty harsh band program like the characters in hibike, but I still don't understand andou-sensei's thought process behind that line. Teachers in the performing arts can be very excessively mean and I'm used to hearing my director giving heartless feedback and screaming at us when she's mad, but I've never heard a completely calm performing arts instructor say something so unconstructive. And if he was secretly mad then that would be stupid of him since he gave them no instruction at all. Maybe if he said "you won't become a top star like that" or something that had any subtext of advice whatsoever then I would think it was a genuine critique instead of the show belittling Sarasa for forced suspense/drama.

Hmm yeah they clearly choose the most hard hitting line. I thought that you were about the intent of the line instead of the form. I think that from the POV the teacher it could make some sense based on the past behaviour of Sarasa, but I kind of agree with your feels

Agree with the above. It makes sense for the drama, but it's making the teachers look pretty crap. Oh no, she can only perfectly mimic whoever she sees once at the very start of her schooling. There's no possible way she could start observing real people and mixing impressions to turn that into a fantastic talent. It's hopeless!

Also the just moving on from last episode's trauma is awkward, yeah.

And yet I'm still enjoying this a lot. I guess it does know how to play us.

God damn this episode fired me up. I would have sworn the fact that Chika wanting to play Juliet would come back in some way majorly...but no it didnt. Just sensei questioning Chika and Ai's acting in regards to each of their roles.

After last week's episode I decided to check out the manga to see if it did things different to the anime only to discover that the anime is taking a lot of liberties. Some examples being that Sarasa's boyfriend should've come up earlier in the anime and that they completely skipped the "reason" behind the curriculum change, the latter being a damn shame because it was such an emotional scene.
Now I'm going to refrain from reading any further 'cause I don't want to set myself up for more disappointment.

Ai was so cute stressing out about calling Sarasa by her first name. So cute!!!! Omg didn’t expect Akiya to actually be her boyfriend, thought he just was the childhood friend. CUTE♡

Andou sensei is a great teacher and he’s so open to criticism of his own teaching, I loved that. He’s also giving great advice. Sarasa will definitely have to add her own flair and not just imitate.

The adaptation so far has been fairly faithful with the diferences being that they re-arranged some events, cut / skipped some content (though some of the cut content really shouldn't have been skipped imo) and that some interactions play slightly differently in the manga. We're also missing the anime jokes / references made by Sarasa and other characters.
What made me disappointed is that the content they decided to skip this time was really good and emotional and it also played a huge part in the curriculum change. And that's why I decided to stop reading the manga, otherwise I'm going to get angry every time I notice these changes.

Finally a breath of fresh air after all that heavy drama. Also Happy 16th Birthday, my girl!!

Overall, another great episode but the dramatic cliffhanger with Andou-sensei's harsh words to Sarasa felt really forced. Especially after having seen her portraying Tybalt quite nicely despite still being a "newbie".
Anyways, guess he will tell her to find her own performance style given that Sarasa practically copied the performance she saw in that DVD but again, was it really necessary to crush the always cheerful girl's dream in front of the whole class? Seriously, what's the problem with the teachers in this academy?

P.S.: Not gonna lie, for a second I thought Sarasa's boyfriend was actually Dio.

Thoroughly impressed!

What a gem of an anime. I can really tell the passion and effort that went into this. One of the most underrated anime I've seen in recent times.

So many things Kageki Shoujo has to offer— the individual circumstances and emotional baggage of each character that fuels the myriad of interactions each episode; the quirky glances/expressions that bring life and vibrancy to the characters; the masterful VAs; and a plot full of twists and turns, with enough setbacks to keep things interesting.

Well done to the staff!

What this anime actually adapts has been great but they REALLY need to adapt the chapters that were skipped over this episode. The whole reason behind them being allowed to act is by far the best "arc" that I've read so far in Kageki and it'd be an absolute shame to just ignore it. Maybe they can make it in a flashback or readjust the circumstances a bit to make it work.
(But also like why would they skip that. everyone i know loves it)

ooh, looks like things are getting interesting. ai not being able to read kanji was unexpected but kinda funny too, always nice to be able to relate to characters as well that look in sarasa's eyes at the end though...

The rivalry between sisters is great, I hope it gets explored more. Also, I hope they won't use more of the "there was a girl in JPX that was like that" again,.. it's only the second time but feels repetitive already. And the two weeks... man the time skip feels too fast imo. Maybe it's cause this is only a one cour anime.

Ohh and I love that the boyfriend issue is shown so casually, and that Sarasa doesn't explain much. Feels refreshing~

About the ending scene, I agree with many of you that Sarasa's probably was too much of a copy of someone else instead of building something of her own, and Phantom sensei's harshness was probably to induce drama and a form of bitter medicine too for Sarasa?

I thought that guy and Sarasa were just childhood friends but they're actually dating, that was unexpected XD

Why did the teacher just flat out say “You cannot be a top star” saying it like that just doesn't make sense since they're all newbies.

Ai getting kinda jealous of Sarasa's bf was cute.

It's good to see Ai change gradually.

The fact that Ai didn't have proper schooling and can't read...then she got into Kouka just for her looks...

Something is definitely going on with the twin. I'm assuming she feels overshadowed by the other one and doesn't wanna spend time with her cuz it'll remind her of her failures?

Also, about the cliffhanger...
If I'm understanding correctly, he thinks Watanabe is only capable of imitating what she's already seen and can't create her own style. He acts like theres no solution but it's honestly really simple? Assign her a scene from a play she doesn't know anything about, don't let her look into previous performances of it, and force her to come up with something on her own. We've seen this with Yatora from Blue Period, and it happens in real life all the time. It's not that difficult. I guess he just don't care enough to bother with helping her.

Rlly? That's a shame. I had read a chapter or two of the manga last year(?) or so, but didn't get any farther than that because I was busy with irl stuff. From what you're saying, it seems like the manga is much better. I almost wanna start reading it again, but I might be setting myself up for disappointment as well.

Yeah, the manga is better. The anime has skipped a bunch of content from the manga and some of those parts that were not adapted into the anime are integral to the plot, like the whole curriculum change arc. Other differences between the anime and the manga is that that they re-arranged some events in the anime, some interactions play differently in the manga and we're missing all the anime jokes / references made by Sarasa and other characters. Sarasa is pretty much a weeb in the manga.

Wacky and fun though this episode was, it doesn't exist in a vacuum.

There's nothing more infuriating than hair-based character development/progression of time when it's only a single character. Made all the worse when the latter is communicated via the sole short-handed girl.
