I can see where you're coming from, but this is not a psychological thriller or anything among those lines. That guy being a nice person instead of a Perfect Blue-like stalker brings so much more value to the series imo. It does a great job regarding PTSD portrayal (for the medium that is), for it is a disease because it manifests itself as an irreverent, non-discriminatory fear, not a valid one. How do you imagine her making a first step towards overcoming that fear in this scenario if that guy was a creep indeed and this took a really dark turn? I mean... yeah, sure, he's a bit 'peculiar', but considering he's so out of touch with the real world and afraid of people and the one person that gave him hope was cancelled because of him (from his pov), how do you expect him to react considering he still has this wish to become better and still stans Ai?

It's fiction aimed at younger girls and I've thought that this approach is quite appropriate. Moreover, how do you expect him to know that Ai wasn't worried about it before he started stalking her? The same action can be perceived in different manners if you change the recipient and his is a plausible take on what could have happened after that unfortunate event, considering his backstory, and he'd dealt with it as he had seen fit. Also, people are equally cringe and make fools out of themselves in real life too and that's ok (being cringe I mean).

Edit: not rhetorical questions, I'm really curious how your optimal, gritty approach would look like or what you would have expected to happen for it to be good. (I'm not saying it's a flawless show by any means, but I didn't find those to be the biggest problems regarding it. Might be wrong tou vOv)

You are partially right, this isn't a psychological thriller, but my personal gripe is that it just pussyfoots the more touchy subjects by adding a lot of comedic values for respite manner, wich makes it quite unbalanced imho. I also have this same problem with a lot of battle shounen that just tries to look cool by being dark and edgy, but it falls flat and brakes immersion with cheesy uncalled comedy.

I would certainly had prefered if the otaku element was played like in Perfect Blue rather than becoming a red herring. But sadly a lot of writers just don't have the balls to taint the otaku, specially when they are the biggest consumers of their product, hence why the whole PTSD and lack of social awareness of that guy feels more like a cheap shoutout and pandering from the author towards a big portion of their customers.

Regarding your subject of Kitaouji not knowing that he wasn't the actual catalyst for Ai to leave the GPX group feels more like a tool to put stalking in a cute light hearted perspective, but in reality both men & women that have suffered from stalkers just won't sit with this very rose tinted glasses perspective, specially if it's released in what you already stated as a series for younger girls. My biggest gripe against Kitaouji is his obsessive apologetic stance that drives him to stalking Ai, common sense would just dictate of him moving on with his life after he found friends with common interests and a steady job. It just feels like a very overused anime cliche and it clashes when the show tries to be serious in other subjects imho.

I'm not a writer and my input on a hypothetic scenario of Ai taking the initial step towards accepting men won't matter (specially in a community like this that immediately jumps on you because we're not published authors) But I can give you this, I certainly would have not introduced a threat like Kitaouji if I wasn't planning on it being an actual threat.

I think the problem is that your opponent used a typical false dilemma, saying that shows should either be as serious as possible with their content, or be as lighthearted and as innocent as possible. But anyway, I do not understand why Western viewers are obsessed with the idea that any show that touches on real issues should immediately turn into the most serious educational content.

Right, because it's easier to throw in a strawman rather than engage in an actual debate. But there really isn't anything to debate on gatekeepers that immediately scorn "baka gaijin" for having their own line of thought that doesn't align with their obviously superior and "right way" of consuming fiction.

I find it quite interesting how you accuse me of using a strawman inside an argument which is literally a strawman against me.

So you are admiting you are using a strawman rather than engage in an actual debate? That's all I wanted to hear in order to easily discard a useless comment that adds nothing to the actual topic. I find my retort fitting to your arrogant comment on how to consume media, since it didn't demand for anything more to elaborate and it can be disected into a simple phrase "you should watch shows the same way I do" to wich there's nothing to actually debate.

Sarasa is on her way to become best girl of the season for me. She's too carefree/dense to be blackmailed and can even make some amazing JoJo faces lol. I love her sunny personality so much.

Honestly, I'm conflicted about this episode. The melodrama felt really overdone (especially the part with Kana Hanazawa's character deciding to screw Sarasa's image just because she woke up feeling like wanting to be a bitch) and the way in how the series tried to justify Ai's stalker's behaviour was... questionable to say the least but in the end, I kinda liked the conclusion with Ai finally making her first move in order to leave her trauma behind. Guess a 3/5 score will do.

Anyways, looking forward to next episode to see how they approach the eating disorder topic.

I admit that you continue to use strawman at the same time as you try to blame me for it. Dude, your sophistry is so fat that I can only repeat that I am incredibly impressed how you try to continue this with a completely serious face.

Another good episode. As someone who is dealing with the same problem as Narata, they portray it really well not only the cause, but also the outcome. I hope her perception toward men improve because of this.

Next episode will be about eating disorder it seems, I am looking forward to it!

That episode was amazing!! I was scared to see where the story was going with what they introduced last week, but I love how the show is tackling heavier topics with care. Ai is great.

I like how they switched singers/characters for the ED.

Holy shit. I did not imagine I'd enjoy(?) this show so much. It's light, yet oh so heavy. Real, but also not too much on the romanticizing end.
So proud of Mikiya for being able to apologize and get his words out. Like a true weeb otaku, he treasured the hankerchief instead of using it. NGL, my eyes teared up when Narata's Seiyuu's voice cracked. Part of me wonders if he's going to come back in the future as some super Chad who's lost weight and became some super main actor who was inspired by his love for Narata.

Also, we've made a lot of progress as friends. True to fashion, Watanabe - the "loud annoying one" can be quiet and cool. I hope we see more of this friendship building. I wonder what kind of worms she herself has cooked up.

stalker otaku guy being a nice dude was expected, but still nice to see. can't wait to see ai's growth as a person after this. can't wait for more sarasa backstory. this show is surprisingly enjoyable, i want more!!

also two other girls for the ending! i LOVE their outfits and the contrast between the pink fairy dress and the cool black outfit.

Yep, the creepy otaku stalker wasn't a threat after all and they couldn't have made it more obvious even if they wanted to.

I really hope that Hijiri's attempt at blackmailing Sarasa isn't a one-off thing and is revisited at some point. I will be royally pissed if that scene was put there just to prompt Sarasa into action and no one ever talks about it again.

And what the hell does Sarasa see in Ai? She said she admires her, but all Ai has done so far is be rude to her. They've barely had any conversation and most of them have been Ai telling Sarasa to leave her alone. Sarasa didn't even know about Ai being an ex-idol which is the only thing that could have sparked any kind of admiration in the first place...

If all it took for Sarasa to admire Ai was seeing her under a cherry tree then holy shit I have no hopes for the writing in this show, at least not when it comes to Sarasa and Ai. Here's hoping the side characters can carry this show for me because I absolutely love the setting and themes of this anime.

The human element of this show is so beautifully scripted. The relationship between the two leads is sweet as fxxk. The ending was intriguing as well. If this keeps on, this is gunna be one of the best of the season. Screw the score. Sleeper hit

absolutely love sarasa. she's so kind and handles situations really well.

glad to see ai slowly overcoming her fears towards the end of the episode- I was starting to get fed up w how she treats sarasa at times though, esp when she says "I wish watanabe would drop out of school" like ???

Sarasa is really a lovable character. Each episode I get to see a likeable trait of her. How she got along with the otaku guy so quickly was so funny and sweet. Sarasa did a good job calling the otaku, it was necessary for both of them to come in terms with each other. Now that he saved Ai, this way Ai can slowly get over the past and realize that it's not necessary for everyone to be the same even if they give off similar questionable vibes. Being with Sarasa will bring a really noticeable change in Ai. I hope Sarasa helps Ai get emotionally stronger so that she can tackle all the men problems herself in the future.

HanaKana's character is such a bitch that I can't even remember her name but thankfully Taichi was there too so he can tell the truth and if Ai can be courageous enough to tell the truth then that would be even better.

What's up with their height difference? I thought Sarasa was a little taller than Taichi...

This one looks more believable, they're probably the same height or Sarasa could be taller by 1 or 2 centimeters

I wonder how many kimo otaku or just regular otaku cry in this episode. It's literally their dream to protect and save their oshi and this episode done it right.

Ps : diet is easy if you can control what you eat. Not stop eating. Just saying here for those who's still can differ both.

Pleasantly surprised by how things turned out. Ai made a significant first step in the right direction and the feelings of Mr. creepy stalker otaku came across. His skills came handy too.

Another surprise was that I'm not irritated at all by Hijiri. Her way of playing the villain is too charming.

As for Ayako. Putting the pressure aside, a shame that there's still such a misconception and lack of knowledge regarding staying in shape, especially among young girls. I assume it's even worse in Japan where people are slim in general.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

Oof. The obnoxious writing trifecta.
You've got the misunderstanding.
You've got the cunty character stumbling upon a conversation she has no business witnessing(thankfully she seemed to just snap a picture and hasn't attempted to instrumentalize details of the conversation, yet)
You've got the third party revealing intimate details of a different character's backstory to a separate third party.

Then there's the just weird incorporating of an element of sexual assault and then immediately following it up with a false assumption on the part of the victim. While yes, it does make sense for Ai to wrongly see ill-intent in otherwise innocuous actions, who could blame her? It's another thing for the narrative to link the two by way of comically misguided "stalker" fan. Yes, Ai needs to overcome her trauma, but I'm not sure this was the proper approach. At the very least, don't follow the traumatic flashback with the wacky antics of addressing the impact of said traumatic flashback.

This writing is SO anime.
Some real Bitter Virgin shit.

The stalker guy wasn't that bad and it made me laugh when they started dancing out there. And Hijri wasn't just a friendly girl. Very obvious that she's just acting.
And him saving Ai in the end was just amazing. Seems like she'll try to get better with men in the future.
pretty sure ai will be playing the female role and sarasa will play the female role in the end

I don't really care for how the stalker plotline was handled here. "He was a nice guy all along" doesn't really excuse the obsessive and dangerous habits of these men and ultimately belittle Ai's feelings and experiences regarding this. Like, wow you didn't even give this guy a chance, when he is literally stalking her. Not that there can't be room to examine and sympathize with these kinds of people, but the tone was just way too light hearted and childish for this subject matter.

MATRIX! Sarasa dancing with mr Gross Otaku was amazing. Good to see he isn't a pervert (just a creepy stalker) and that he just wanted to apologize for something that wasn't completely his fault. Even more respect that he tried to save her there at the end.

Hijiri should literally piss off with her trying to stir up trouble for no reason at all.

The whole stalker thing wasn't handle that well, though.
