If you asked this question in Japan, you’d get funny looks that will make you feel uncomfortable. Or even ashamed to be an “Otaku”.

But outside of Japan? The definition has been twisted, bent, twirled and shaped into a NEW meaning all together.

Here’s how I define an Otaku (which most have agreed with):

“An Otaku is someone who’s “deep” into anime culture.”

You might own merchandise, or you might not. But one thing’s for sure:

*You read anime blogs and have an understanding of WHAT’S happening in the industry.

*You’re passionate about anime, but not to the detriment of your life or wellbeing.

*You’re knowledgeable about anime.

An Otaku in Japan (from what I know) is someone who can’t differentiate between fiction and reality. And literally is so lost in anime (or gaming) that it’s ruining their lives and their sense of reality.

Even so, the definition of an “Otaku” is still up for debate. And I want to know what's your opinion on it.

Otaku - a young person who is obsessed with computers or particular aspects of popular culture to the detriment of their social skills.

I'm pretty sure otaku in Japanese is essentially just the equivalent of geek. It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with anime or even fiction. You can be an anime otaku, a music otaku, or even something more niche like a train otaku or a motorcycle otaku. I think the only reason the word is looked down upon in Japan is just because Japan is extremely collectivist, and thus the individualism and shamelessness in being massively invested into something are considered negative traits. In the "west," otaku has just come to mean someone who likes anime and the general culture around it. Just a less derogatory and more specific version of weeb.

Just an anime fan, who is indeed deep into anime?.. But this can take various forms, I feel.. Like, not necessary person has to read about industry as whole, or studios, or whatever.. He can just watch hundreds of anime, and call himself an otaku, why not?.. I imagine not that many people actually read about this, because why do that, if you can just enjoy your anime in that time instead?.. But I have no idea about numbers, just a wild guess..
Also it can go in detrimental ways, or can not go there.. I think either ones can be called otaku - on the West, that is, not touching, what it is in Japan..
Overall, otaku is just word used here and there for anime fan, really.. Like weeb today is also like this.. Both used with not 100% seriousness, with some irony in that usually.. Well, as it feels to me..

Outside of Japan, Otaku is someone who is obsessed with anime/manga that it even affect their real life activities.

Inside of Japan, Otaku is a nerd who is obsessed about anything, not just anime.

To say that we lose our sense of reality I do not see as an offense. We do not know how to distinguish fiction from reality ... Perhaps it is true.

That phrase seems somewhat contradictory to me; you are investing real time in watching anime and many times we change our ideals for an anime, it is proof that a fictional character is capable of modifying reality. Similarly, something like "you don't know how to distinguish fiction from reality" is a phrase that is probably used as a joke or hyperbole in Japan, it does not necessarily mean that it really is.

Well I do not buy anime merch or get too worked up about how an author chooses to end the story (E.g, I would have liked Maou to end up with Emilia in Hataraku Maou-sama but was more disappointed than angry and just dropped it). But I also watch a lot of anime, read some manga and play some PC video games in my freetime.

So I would say that I am fairly into anime, games and manga as a main source of entertainment but I don't treat them as blessings from heaven. I don't collect figurines of anything or buy any game cosmetics. I don't visit Comic cons and other such gatherings.

I do have contact with friends who also are not interested in these stuff but we respect each other's entertainment choices. But I generally don't like to deal with people.

But I do think that trying to classify people under a certain category and then discriminating against them is wrong.
Best ending line in anime history = "My name is Saiki Kusuo. I am a psychic."

Nerd/obsession. It's not anime specific in Japan. You can be a history otaku, train otaku, military otaku, film otaku etc. That is it no point in really using it in English when we have better words to describe these kinds of people.

I meant the meaning was "Your house" that has come to mean someone who obsessively exerts time, money, and energy into a hobby

otaku means to be obsessed about something to the point of insanity. I am a football otaku for I watch nearly 10 games a week aprox and could talk all day about bundesliga, la liga and ucl, I visit football sites every day and know almost all footballers from major championships and their playing style. I can also talk about historical matches like that deportivo vs milan game or madrid vs juventus.
you can also be otaku about work, I have pals who are obsessed with pragramming, when they start to talk I feel sick

otaku means having a crazy level of knowledge about some hobby. it's not anime exclusive.
I watch a shitload of anime, own anime merch and I don't call myself an otaku because I know very little about the anime industry itself. I'm familiar with studios, big name directors, some character designers. I know what's involved in making anime, old and new. I can draw and attempted animation as well but this is all surface level stuff.
otaku is "okay, stop talking. it's tiring just to listen" levels of crazy.

You can't just call any anime fan an otaku. Usually those are the geeks that collect anime shit and dress up in cosplay and go to anime conventions, etc. Just watching anime and maybe writing some shit on this forum wouldn't make anyone an otaku.

Outside of Japan, otaku/weeb/anime fan are synonymous.

Thing is, someone in the west referring to themselves as otaku is cringe and painfully lacking self awareness. Because usually, the reason is because they don't like the word weeb for its association to weeaboo which for a long time was an insult, as in obsessed with Japan.

"I'm not a weeaboo, I'm an otaku" even though calling yourself an otaku is ironically the most weeaboo thing you could do. I think the phrase "otaku culture" is fine as people will get what you're talking about and it's not exclusive to anime/manga, but as far as referring to yourself as an otaku, yeah no.
