I wanted my friend to draw a spring and autumn school uniform as a design in story but I don't know which one's which or how it actually works in real life..

The last school anime I remembered that went through all 4 seasons is Love Live!.

Did I labelled those correctly?

The main difference between RL school uniforms and anime school uniforms is that the latters' skirts are about 1/3 of the length of the formers'.

You decide what do you want to wear, but of course you don't want to wear different uniform with the other right? I mean it is cold to wear summer uniform in autumn or spring, and there are people who wear cardigan in autumn too. Of course it is applied to school with gakuran uniform too. But if you are drawing anime, it is better to use other anime as reference. The different between most of anime uniform design with RL is the anime one are more quirky(saiki kusuo for example).
I'm a men btw. But if you want to draw a girl character, I suggest you to draw sailor uniform.

I think all anime girls should follow Takarada Rikka method of "no seriously, look closer, I am wearing a skirt".

Depends where you live in Japan. In Tokyo they're not as long as they are elsewhere in Japan, but most students roll their skirts up. There's some anime schools that only provide super short skirts, but in most of them it's simply assumed that 100% of girls are rolling up their skirts to make them short. Some anime even have a couple girls who don't roll their skirts up with the length difference showing that their school doesn't actually force the girls to wear their skirts that short but the girls are being disobedient by doing so.

OT: Most schools have two uniforms for the year, one for the warmer months and one for the colder months. The students are told well ahead of time when to change and have to mark it on their calendars, but some may forget (but won't be punished for wearing the wrong uniform). The girls' winter uniform would probably be more effective at keeping them warm if they weren't socially pressured into rolling their skirts up, but they always have the option of wearing tights underneath if they're cold.

IMHO, short skirts look better on anime girls than in IRL girls, I guess since I find anime girls cuter than real life girls ? LOL.
I frown at recent installments of Persona and Trails of Cold Steel that introduce harem-like elements in the story.

We need more JRPGs like the past Lunar series, where there are multiple romantic pairings in the party other than for the protagonist and main heroine.

Btw school uniforms in Japan already cost $1000 for the four uniforms (summer, winter, gym, swim). Adding a fifth one would even further discourage low income parents from sending their kids to school.

Even here it's not too uncommon for elementary school girls to wear short skirts, but they generally wear tights or leggings under them. Kind of a necessity since girls that young don't realize what flashing their panties represents.

@-Haoto-
The uniform companies have a monopoly on the industry since each school gets one company to do all of their uniforms and so the companies have no incentive to make them any cheaper since parents have to fork up whatever it costs if they want their kids to go to school, which it's illegal not to do.

@wangon I think it's just the school not caring about the length of the skirt. I'm sure that she bought her skirt when she was in 1st grade and she's probably around the 3rd grade now.
I'm form a Muslim country after all so it's the school's fault.

@zombie_pegasus I've never seen a student wear thighs in where I'm from (I'm sure Muslims wear them but you know why we're not able to see).
Wait, so there are schools in Japan that are like anime where there're unique school uniforms?

i don't quite know about that since i myself haven't travelled all over japan so i can't say this for sure. i never see a school girl/boy wearing a quirky uniform, uniform okay not casual clothes(because i see a lot of them even in other country). and elementary don't have any uniform, don't know about rich school(and i don't want to be called a freak for doing research about that).

I am just amazed they cost that much, they have them here because they are supposed to stop bullying when children wear cheap clothes.

2x trousers/skirts £40
5x shirts £80
Tie £8
jumper/jacket £20-£50
Everyone wears their own PE and swim wear.

So 5 times cheaper. The summer and winter uniform is also a con to extract more money too. The only thing you need to buy from the school are the tie and jumper/jacket which will have the school logo on.

The Japanese ribbons look cute on girls though.

"Unique" might be going a little far. It's not like in anime where you can have the typical seifuku in any colour of the rainbow, they're usually black or navy blue, but the schools do like to put some kind of mark on their uniforms to make sure people know which students are theirs when they're out of school but still wearing their uniforms. For richer schools the uniform is even a piece of honour because not many people can afford to go there and by proxy wear the uniform (although even if you wanted the uniform without going to school there it would probably still be expensive).

Yeah, the tie/ribbons/PE kit can be red/blue/green depending on the year you are in, I think that is a good idea and it's good they don't change each year. Mind you, that could be a new way of the uniform makers to rip off the parents.

Hi. I don't know any Mandarin or Chinese dialect, but likewise, I too can know the meaning of Chinese characters because I learned Kanji from Japanese. I did learned Japanese more than a decade ago, but now I started to learn to draw anime-style as I need to make one with characters and story that have not yet been made in Japan yet, as i want one with a story about interracial romance. As my story I want to write will feature an African-American male MC raised in Japan since small, engaging in romcom with heroines in high school life. Maybe even harem ?

I'm not sure why the idea of girls wearing skirts as short as anime girls' skirts surprises so many people. Have you seen how the average girl dresses? Most girls wear shorts that stop just under the cusp of her ass and in my experience, when girls wear skirts they tend to be about as short, or almost as short as anime girl's skirts. I will say I can only speak from an American perspective, but from an American perspective, there is nothing surprising or baffling to me about the length of anime girls' skirts. The outfits you see on this instagram page are what I've seen to be normal on most college campuses during warm weather months...

Some elementary schools in Japan do have uniforms, but they're not the majority so maybe they are private schools. Over 90% of public middle and high schools in Japan have a uniform of some sort. The standard for skirts is apparently 9cm above the knee, at least in Tokyo, but in more rural areas the skirts can be even longer.

How do school uniforms work in anime?

Well they where their uniform absolutely everywhere it's often all we see except for the 15 minutes of the obligatory "mini Dating Arc episode". Other than the only time they might change is if the season changes from Summer to winter uniforms

Yeah, it's not something surprising.

For example, half of the schools in my country (Venezuela) make middle school/high school girls wear trousers with their uniforms (just like boys) instead of skirts precisely because they can't stop girls from wearing their skirts as short as humanly possible.

The Japanese exchange student we had said her school had ugly uniforms and the skirt went near to the ankle.

When we had a Japanese class visit our high school the uniforms were 2 inches above the knee, a sweater vest, a blazer and bow ribbon more like love live but longer. The boys were so tall..... o_o was not expecting. I am 5’8 and most were taller than me. The girls were so tiny....

The average height of a Japanese man is around 160.3cm.
I'm 178 cm (or 5 feet, 10.08 inches if I'm correct).

Maybe it's just a coincidence that you bumped into tall students, lol.
I've seen anime characters being very tall despite not being a sports or action anime. There were even females around 180 cm. So maybe the average height is increasing.

The average is 5’7... so logically more should have been shorter than me. This was Over 10 years ago in 2008. I think, it is possible that students who learn English and are more interested in USA, might be taller. Our exchange student was 5’5. Taller than most jpn girls. But the girls who came with the class to visit that day were Very much average. But there were only 3. But there were a lot of boys.
