It's not about Ash being heartbroken. He had to kill Shorter because of Banana Fish, a drug. Now, imagine yourself explaining such worldwide matter to random 14 year old. Yeah, this doesn't work. But okay, let's say Ash explains what happened. "I had to kill your boss because he was injected with a lethal drug called Banana Fish. He became so terrified of Eiji that he wanted to kill him. I didn't want Eiji to die and Shorter was suffering so I shot him". Sing would probably ask if Ash is on drugs himself.

To be honest, Ash doesn't even need to explain as clearly as what you suggested.. He just need to hesitate a bit or split out one word that could at least get Sing not to believe 100% he killed Shorter. Just that 1% of doubt is enough for a person like Sing since he knew how close Ash and Shorter were since the start. I'm just worried that it's going to turn into something cliche later.

Yeah, I can totally see that happen.

The manga is 19 volumes long and this ep is vol 6 or 7. There's still most of the story left to go. Also it's been confirmed as 2 cour for a while now.

That's what I was thinking too.

Look man, if a random kid came yelling at me while I was mourning my best friend who died at my own hands, explaining the situation to them would be so far from my first reaction that shooting them point blank would probably come sooner.

And Ash hesitating? That simply doesn't make any sense and would make the scene way worse. It'd mean he actually consciously decided to withhold the information and then [act] like he's too distraught to answer, instead of just, you know, throwing out a kid that really had no place being there and asking him invasive questions.
Wouldn't you say that'd feel way less realistic and serve no other purpose than moving the plot into a certain direction?

I get that you don't like unnecessary drama, who does, but at this point the only two people who could've explained the situation to Sing were Ash and Yut-Lung - and it's in the latter's best interest to keep Sing in the dark.
Frankly I think the anime has been doing pretty good so far with contrivances of this sort - misunderstandings, bad communication, people jumping to conclusions, etc - and all the characters have been pretty hesitant to jump ship the second they heard somebody "betrayed" them. I have faith this will be resolved to everybody's satisfaction too =)

It deserves to be but I doubt it since so many homophobic beta males won't give it a chance because they heard there's a male kiss in it and generally regarded as shounen ai instead of shojo. Neither genres are fitting IMO.

Shojo isn’t a genre, it’s a demographic. Banana Fish ran in a girls magazine and Yoshida has stated she prefers to write for girls, so that’s all there is to it (though if you ask me, it’s storytelling and emotional aims are recognisably shojo, even though the setting and genres are now considered unusual for the demographic).

As for calling it a BL, I’m fine either way. It does include a loving m/m relationship and has many BL tropes, but otoh... if the BL tag is applied to it, many people (especially the sort of straight dudes you were talking about) would view it like BL was the only, or the main, defining feature of the work, and it’s a label a lot of people view negatively. Plus the author has stated it isn’t a BL.

Thank you for informing me of stuff I knew 30 years ago. I'm probably old enough to be your mum. Your snide know-it-all attitude aside, I disagree that it's "recognizably" shojo. It was very groundbreaking and very different than your typical shojo story. The demographic (you know the target audience?) is not mature enough and should actually be josei, IMO. Akimi Yoshida has the last word of course as the mangaka so it gets labeled "shojo".

I have a love-hate relationship with this anime and think there should be a drinking game everytime someone makes unwanted advances towards the main guys... I don't know why, but this particular part of Banana Fish makes me roll my eyes. I don't know why, but sometimes it's really hard for me to get into the drama despite the hardships everyone goes through.

Also I still haven't figured out whose side Yue-Lung Lee is on, the guy is honestly confusing.

But I like those moments between Eiji and Ash. The guy's reaction at Ash's request to protect Eiji at all costs was priceless, even in the anime everyone seems to notice the chemistry.

My comment wasn’t “snide”, it was simply factually correcting a very common misconception in the anime community, which I’ve seen arisen a lot in discussions of BF . I couldn’t have known your actual state of knowledge based off one comment nor how old you are. I know it can sting a little when someone corrects you but there’s no need to get this defensive.

I disagree that it's "recognizably" shojo. It was very groundbreaking and very different than your typical shojo story.

As I said, the series is indeed very different from most modern shojo. However, my point is I think the shojo core of the series is still recognisably there. For example, the focus on the characters and their emotiveness (something shojo in particular likes to focus on), the cute/comedic moments from time to time, or the general lack of realism / contrivances in the plot. To me it feels more like a shojo drama than a crime drama.

The demographic (you know the target audience?)

The demographic is known through 1) Yoshida’s own statement that she wants to write for girls, and most importantly 2) the fact it ran in a shojo magazine.

is not mature enough and should actually be josei, IMO.

I disagree. BF is plenty dark at times, to be sure, but I wouldn’t say it comes off as particularly mature. It doesn’t have the maturity or tone of Josei or seinen I’ve watched/read. It comes off to me as something that would appeal most, or atleast as well, to teenagers rather than the 20+ year old adult demographic.

While I don't think you intended it to be snide, it came off that way since you certainly seemed to enjoy rubbing my nose in it for not being clear. You came off correcting me just to hear yourself type rather than just genuinely clarifying. I'm still getting that vibe from you but this is MAL and I'm used to expecting know-it-all kids commenting, so it's likely we both jumped the gun and misjudged the other.

EDIT: So I just read your reply on episode 7. I just saw the post and it appears that you haven't actually read the manga in full? Seriously? I'm not going to dismiss you but I sure as hell am done discussing a relationship you have yet to really dive into without spoiling the plot for you. When you are done with the manga, you can tell me how "shojo" you think the romance is and how it's different from bonds like say Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha, Gon and Killua, Mikaela Hyakuya and Yuuichiro Hyakuya, Ken Kaneki & Hideyoshi Nagachika or even Kotesu Kubaragi and Barnaby Brooks Jr. All fiercely loyal and unbreakable bonds that may border on romantic (or just in shipper's eyes) based on what we see on pages/on screen. So I deleted my original reply to you which is pointless since you haven't even f*cking read the manga.

I just will say this was better episode than the last episode. Not to mention I find was cool to see how Ash protects Eiji and not letting him to be kill anyone no matter what. I like how he understand how that matters alot. But the show occationally throws off some very uneasy situation thats hard to watch but the story itself carried the curious to watch this show for me so far.

This was a heavy action-packed episode for sure.

Seeing Rambo Ash killing everyone who crossed paths with him was quite nice. It was a good ep. although I wish they would have clarified why Ash had to kill Shorter. Now that Sing guy misunderstood everything and for that reason, I'm a bit afraid that might cause some unnecessary drama. But well, we'll see what happen.

And on a side note, I'm a bit disappointed that it wasn't Max who killed that bastard who raped Jessica but well, at least he died in terror while looking at Ash.

This episode was pretty crazy.

While Dino and Arthur were away, Yut-Lung helped Ash escape. See? I knew he wasn’t all bad. He also took away with Banana Fish. I wonder just what his plans are?

Ash basically becomes Rambo on his attempt to save Eiji and escape the mansion. Everyone ends up getting out safely thanks to Ash’s efforts but Ash decides its not enough and goes after the doctor. I hate that he had to see Shorter’s body like that, you can tell he was really messed up from it. I’m glad he pumped that doctor full of bullet holes.

I wonder what Sing plans to do In the future and how important he’ll be? I really hope he doesn’t blame Ash for Shorter’s death. Especially since he doesn’t know the whole situation. For now, I think maybe it’s good that he went with Yut-Lung.

I'm glad my tears one episode back was paid off in this episode. Rambo mode Ash was truly a great channel for rage, wonderful that the doctor's out of the narrative as well.

Now I also understand why people here keep saying that they're in a love hate relationship with Yue Lun (why is it always spelled Yut?), I want to blame him for causing all of the pain in the last two episodes but also congratulate him for saving our boys' asses.

This show definitely got me hooked. Super hooked.

Geez, this is so dark, everyone either die, get hurt or violated, just blood and tears, nothing else ;_; I don't know, I like both drama and some edge, but this isn't the most fun anime to watch. Maybe if the balance of drama and SOME comic relief was a bit better... hopefully it won't be this way, or worse, for the second half of this series.

You just explained something I griped about throughout the series. There are LOTS of comedic moments left out of this adaptation because of serious time constraints. no way 18 volumes and an a final chapter could be adapted in 24 episodes. Lots of of the funnier stuff and more things involving supporting and side characters (like Shorter's sister) was trimmed as fat so the plot itself would be covered. Then we got all of these cell phone shortcuts with the modernization of the era from the mid 1980s. So the pacing is sped up but we lose a lot of the slower moments (which we need time to breathe and process WTF horrible thing just happened). Now knowing the producers really wanted the anime to be 3 cours but weren't given the time alloted it really bums me out.

Oh gosh, Eiji telling Ash he'd wait for him forever... ahhh

I also appreciate that Ash will cry. It just feels a lot more real seeing the violence and shock on top of that. I also like the snippet of Griffin telling him as a boy not to cry because he won't even stop the tears for his dead brother. He feels so much for the people he cares about.

No matter what Ash always speaks so endearingly & kindly to Eiji ㅜㅡㅜ

Those flames........at least Ash was able to cremate Shorter’s body & stop them from further desecrating him. That was so hard to see Shorter’s body lying on the table. I’m glad Ash shot Abraham dead & many times at that. Tho he didn’t deserve such an easy death. Not at all. Ash should have injected him with Banana Fish & bounded him before setting that place on fire. Yut Lung should have left one dose behind. Sigh, I can’t get over Shorter’s death......

What is Yut Lung up to......

Lmao I don't wanna spoil, but Sing is a good kid. That's all I can say.

In other news Eiji's "I'll always be waiting for you" line is straight out of a Hollywood action and romance movie. I'm laughing at the fact that Eiji's role is framed so much like the hard-boiled hero's love interest/heroine of such movie (e.g. being the damsel in distress, Ash's moral compass, etc).

Ash and Eiji's escape from the mansion is iconic, and you can see how their relationship has subtlely developed.

On a more somber note: despite it being such a tragic scene, Ash crying while continuously shooting Abraham, followed by him screaming in despair, will forever be one of the best scenes in the series. It's cathartic in a way, as Ash is drowning in despair while avenging Griffin and Shorter. We are seeing Ash in one of the lowest points of his already tragic life.
