MAL is very popular in the west, but in Japan, many people use different listing websites for anime. A popular japanese website called Anikore. which has a top ranking list that's totally different from MAL's, AniDB's, Anilist's, etc. An interesting video from Yuta interviewing random japanese people about whether they've seen some of the top 20 anime on MAL, and their opinions. What do you think about the differences between the abovementioned Anikore's top list and MAL's top list; as you can see some very big distinctives; for example, as some of their top anime are obviously ranked lower here |

I remember the author of HakoMari said that he was surprised that his LN was on top on MAL (not nowadays though because of the trolls and haters who bombed its score) but he was a bit sad because he wanted his work to be popular in Japan. I think japanese people kinda don't care about it, but let's find out from our local japanese denizen |

Do some people seriously think SAO is regarded as garbage yet manages continue to get seasons, spin-offs, and movies every year... this is beyond delusional thinking. |

I don't even care about MAL top ranking. As long as it doesn't has a really low score, the chance is the same if I will like it or not. All anime with rating above 7.5 have more or less same quality. The only reason why some anime can get score as high as 9.0 is only because it has more fanboys and fangirls. |

There's more variety in the top20 from Anikore. That's a compliment. There's also less concern for plot holes, narrative consistency or use of tropes/lack of originality. And that is also a compliment. I don't see how in any way or form MAL's top is better. And I count at least three entries in Anikore's top20 that are top20 to me. MAL has one. |

I love the way Japanese people think about anime. Like they watch all kinds of shits. And surprisingly Monogatari is a huge thing in Japan along with Madoka magica... But there is one thing I don't get it why Japanese are so crazy about idol shits... I thought a lot about this but nothing comes in my mind... |

Those anime get much better marketing than abroad, targeting a wider age group and also with ads and trailers on mainstream TV channels and cinema movies, something impossible elsewhere where anime relies on streaming channels |

The first 2 episodes of SAO, as well as the idea behind SAO, are out of this world, but the rest of the anime is so crap that when you can watch the anime for what it is you quickly ask yourself "wow, when did this become a slice of life?" The second season didn't do it any favors as far as world popularity either, but over 80% (don't quote me on that percentage, it's been shifting less and less with increased exposure and censor culture caused a HUGE boom from live action to anime) of merchandising and disk sales come from INSIDE Japan's borders so how the outside world sees it? They don't really give a damn. |

I wonder how the rankings would also look if they were also split via watched in dub vs watched in sub. ArendQuest said: I also remember a video from Yuta and like the 90% of people in Akihabara is more in to idol and slice of life anime. people here seem to hate slice of life or episodic anime since they often have no overarching plot. For me a lack of a plot isn't a big deal, but for other people if there isn't some goal or plot then they can't enjoy the show. |

I watched that too, and pretty surprised that Steins Gate isn't well known between these random people. Also, one of them mentioned how the list seems to be lacking some classics. Which, i think they might think that top anime = popular + well loved anime instead of just simply loved (high rated) anime. But i might be wrong.. Japan bought 100m+ copies of demon slayer. So bad tastes are universal. In West people are more critical. That's why the top anime on MAL have longevity. Top anime here will be more relevant in future when hype dies. |
Anime was it's best 20000 years ago, when cavemen drew art with real depth. Modern anime is all garbage. I miss great old days of anime. |

I would say from my own experience in living in Japan that Neon Genesis Evangelion and, currently Demon Slayer, is everywhere. Pokémon is super popular obviously, but Love Live is also quite popular over here, think there was an anime of that. Attack on Titan stuff you see every now and again, but something like Full Metal Alchemist, while popular on MAL, I don't ever see anywhere nor people talking about it. |

Even though the plot might not be that bad on the large scale, if you pay attention to every small event you can tell how poor it is and how dumb it can get. But well, you are not ready for this discussion. |

I guess I was reffering more to their relaxed attitude towards anime in general, from what I've seen in this video and others. At least that's the superficial impression they give lol. I'm sure there are really passionate individuals there too, even more than in the west. In fact, I can't really have a competent opinion, since I don't have a big picture of this. Comparing a specialized forum with random people on the streets isn't the best thing and I have no idea what their forums are like. Yeah I agree. Both lists are pretty similar. The distinctions I can make is that Japanese aren't afraid of moe compared to the West, while the West have a tendency to overrate shallow series that appears mature on the surface. |
