Should I stay on MAL or migrate to Anilist?

I'm seeing a lot of old MAL members moving to Anilist recently. What makes anilist so much better? I made an anilist account to see what It was all about and saw those same MAL users trashing MAL in the forums.

To be honest, the only reason I'm still using MAL is because the forums are more active than those on Anilist. I like playing forum games, reading people arguing, and occasionally shitpost. But now, I feel like this site is a ghost town compared to past years. (And the site is still ugly. God is it ugly.)

What changes do you think MAL should make to stay in the game and maybe make the older users come back?

>what MAL should do?

maybe start picking and doing the endless suggestion threads on the suggestion forum

and ye MAL is dying in forum activity and i think it will reach its peak soon in members count maybe 10 million at most then AniList might take over if MAL does not improve its website code and features

The ''make an official dark theme for MAL'' thread is in ''consideration'' since 2013. What a joke.

I would stay since it’s more active, but I’ll admit when I started posting on the forums I expected there to be more people posting. I’ve heard that MAL used to have much more activity than it does now.

From my POV, it's not dying and the forums aren't "dead" or anything. But I'm a relatively new user so I have no clue about the past.

I'm gonna be chilling here as long as possible.

Yup, and the forums over there are like ghost towns. The times I've browsed over there, I would rarely see activity n the forums.

Anilist is fine if all you want to do is update your list, but it doesn't really have a semblance of a community in the same way that MAL has.
Their forums are quite dead.
Also their website is poorly optimized and heavy on the resources.
One thing I really like about anilist is their scoring system it's much better than MAL.

If the MAL community is dead, the AniList community wasn't even alive to begin with.

Also, MAL may be ugly as fuck, but it's 100 times better than AniList's shitty modern design. Imagine rating anime with smily faces like a fucking clown.

You don’t like this site’s design? Sure it’s not flashy like Anilist, but it’s charm is that it’s quite simple and easy to use.

I was once very active on this site and forums overall the proof is there in my forum post but personally I haven't posted in the anime discussion threads or casual discussion threads in a while now mostly due to life and using other social media platforms like Reddit, Twitter, YouTube , discord and Instagram, so I now mostly use this site to update my list occasionally and discuss in the snk anime and manga discussion forum(that is where I'm mostly at), but I will say one thing I will never leave Mal for anilist as I too have tried it out and just didn't like the design of it not to mention the forums were so dead people rarely discuss over there and that is what I like most about Mal.

I personally like the simple look on mal.

ngl as someone who just joined, MAL has the right amount of activity for me. Not too busy, but there's a decent couple of posts every hour or so. It's not totally dead imo. I wish the boards for older anime were a bit more active, but I suppose unless something's currently airing new episodes there's not much to talk about.

Until these forums get completely overrun with edgy riffraff, I'll stick around. I think in general, forums aren't really a thing anymore.

And as someone who initially signed up here just to keep track of anime, anilist's layout is so... :/ I am not a fan of the whole Web 3.0 mobile-friendly look.

Despite it's old design and frequent crashes (which thank god haven't been happening for a few weeks now) i still like the overall community and the amount of personalization each user has (with forum sets and profile layouts) unlike Reddit where everyone essentially looks the same. Anilist has some cool ideas, but like others have said the forums are pretty much a ghost town, and it's UI is poorly optimized. I'll stick around for the time being since i've made some pretty cool friends here.

never did saw it as dying strange though maybe its because some aspecsts are beyond outdated like paying to add more favorites and having only a certain limit of them where any other place its infinite.

You and the others who say it hasn't been happening must be getting lucky times you check, at least a couple times a day I still get the errors and the site won't load or it half loads but nothing you do actually stays. It's better but it isn't fixed.

I find MAL forums increasingly boring recently. There's rarely any interesting or discussion-worthy topic. Also, the rules are getting absurd and annoying. People getting banned relentlessly and it often makes no sense. If I joke to someone like "fuck you you fucking piece of shit, I am far superior than you little faggot", I'll get banned. If I talk about politics and my views are offensive according to mods' pov, I'll get banned (that's what I think at least, I'm just falsely accusing here).

Also, some find it too toxic, some find it too mundane. MAL is like a middle ground, which I find quite pleasant actually, but can easily turn many off. Unsurprisingly, it can also be boring as well.

But anyway, it's a pretty boring, shitty, time-wasting community. I can definitely see why many people are leaving the site.

Anilist is not so popular. It lacks many features MAL has.
The only original thing Anilist can offer is different rating systems. Man they even have emoji ratings for "special" kind of people. But imo those decimals and smiles are not necessary at all.
Also, I find Anilist's forum discussions even more cancerous than here on MAL. Degenerates everywhere.

All the admins threw a tantrum when a boatload of new users came with Interspecies Reviewers raid.. Proceeded to either ban or make their scores not count..

there is a big probably with this thread and that is forum users are speaking to forum users. on the grand scale of things I don't think MAL is dying even if you don't see the new genuine accounts pop up. I mean look at how most popular anime is still growing.

I'm glad to see that i'm not the only one who loathes Anilist's "modern" look with it's infinite scrolling, lots of whitespace, unnecessary animations and overall design that makes it look like an ""app"" rather than a website. Though i fear the tragic day when MAL deploys a similar redesign to appeal to the younger audience, accustomed to consuming the web through smartphone rather than desktop, is not too far.

I'd really like to say that i will stick to MAL till that day, but MAL itself makes it progressively harder to advocate for it, introducing more & more "features" that are more of a degradation in my eyes - javascript-loaded images and ReCaptcha being the latest ones. The anime, manga and character database here is also in very poor condition. If you take a look at any older anime you'll see that it has full cast of characters featured on the website, including even background and nameless characters. The airing anime nowadays pretty often have only the main characters added, omitting secondary characters even when they have a considerable screen time in the anime. And sadly this situation doesn't seem like improving anytime soon, seeing how user's contributions to the database are being ignored and less popular anime & manga takes forever to be approved.

To be honest, i consider AniDB to be superior to MAL and even thought of switching to it at one point, but the SJW update that happened over there at the time has driven me away.

P.s. oh wow, two users who posted in this thread no earlier than yesterday, are now gone. Migrated to Anilist, lol?
