IN general I found the chemistry between the main couple in every romance anime I liked to be excellent, otherwise I wouldn't have enjoyed them so much. That starts with the fabulous Nodame Cantabile and goes all the way to Kimi ni Todoke or Ore Monogatari.

Spice and Wolf is the obvious answer but so many named it already that I'll go with its inofficial predecessor, Lafiel & Jinto from Crest of the Stars. It's not a show that focuses a lot on the romance, but the subtle chemistry between the main characters, in their dialogues and in terms of how their relationship progresses was a pleasure to watch.

And lastly, and this is where the fact that my taste in romance is different from most people manifests itself the most, is that I actually like most of the UC Gundam romance, at least when the main character is involved. Most people shit on Tomino romance, but I shit on pretty much everything else about his rating but actually like the main romances a lot. Kamille X Four is still one of my OTP and even Judau X Puru really grew on me and made me really emotional at the end. Something about broken x broken character love just appeals to me, maybe even moreso because of the feeling that it is doomed from the start because of the circumstances.

Once you're familiar with the basic premise and concepts (Federation, Zeon, one-year-war, newtypes, colony system etc...) you can basically watch however you want and even skip stuff like ZZ.

What makes an recommendations for viewing order complicated is that the quality varies a lot. Unicorn makes all of UC worth it imo, but it's not always easy getting there. And the OVAs range from some of the best stuff in the franchise (War in the Pocket, Thunderbolt, 8th MS Team) to being pretty much garbage eyecandy (Stardust Memory) and everything in between.

I would probably recommend to skip the original anime and instead watch (or even better read) Gundam: The Origin. Then you can decide if you want to continue the UC timeline with Zeta and so on, or just watch the best OVAs since you now have some context for them. I definitely recommend watching the 3 OVAs I pointed out earlier, they are 3 of my 5 favorite entries of the whole franchise. You can watch Unicorn even if you decide to skip most of the UC timeline, but it won't be the 10/10 it is when you've seen it all in continuity. The stuff after Unicorn is not very good imo.


And beyond the UC timeline, it really doesn't matter much what you watch in which order. Each of the other timelines works as a standalone, although some are definitely better than others and they vary in terms of style and writing a lot. I haven't seen all of them, but my favorite so far is definitely Iron-blooded Orphans. But aside from UC timeline continuity you can just click yourself through the entries and see what caches your eye basically.
