| My personal favorites are Kill la Kill's Special (AKA Ep.25) and Attack on Titan's No Regrets (Levi's backstory special). Also, it's enough of a complete story that it could technically be watched independently from the series that comes before it (at the cost of much of its impact, of course). But, yes, it really is a fantastic OVA. |

| Before I can answer that I would have to hammer out the details of what counts in this scenario and that would take too long to be worth it. People are just picking OVAs that are either standalone or a direct continuation of the main story that just happened to come out on DVD, which is basically like picking a TV series. |

| Kino no Tabi: Tou no Kuni is honestly one of the best stories of the franchise and a great standalone episode. I am not a fan of the other OVAs/specials but this one sticks and it's almost never mentioned. If you loved the series, you'll love Hakumei to Mikochi: Neji to Bed to Irori to Bakuchi. It's just another episode disguised as an OVA but it's one of the greats. The Yuru Camp specials are shorter, more clearly focused on the comedic antics than the iyashikei, and really great nonetheless. |

| Shiki Specials is hands down the best optional material (aka side story) of any TV series. The events of episode 20.5 are mentioned in the main TV show, but the specials show them in all their gory magnificence. This is how I understand the question: This OVA is neither a continuation of the main story line, nor stand alone. It's optional episodes which are not needed to follow the main story line. |
