Anyone else on here listen to classical? Seems like I only listen to classical anymore. Have seen Mitsuko Uchida and Maurizio Pollini live. They were great. I mostly listen to Chopin. My two favorites right now are Prelude no. XX Op. 28 and Marche Funebre in C Minor, Op. 72,2.

If you like classical, especially classical piano, lets talk about it!

To me, I believe Chopin is the best for solo pieces, along with Debussy and Rachmaninoff. Of course the three all have grand pieces that consist of a variety of instruments, possibly even an entire orchestra, yet they are not prominently beloved for that.

Otoh, at times when I prefer large pieces such as symphony or concerto, I think I'd find myself enjoying Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Brahms and perhaps, Grieg.

I think my knowledge of classical piano pieces is pretty superficial. I know most of the famous ones and it's even worse with the composers. Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Debussy...the usual, I guess.

I like listening to Debussy. La Fille Aux Cheveux Du Lin is one of my favourites.

Also Schubert's Erlkönig because I'm trying to get the vocals down for it and I'm just a hobbyist singer. It's rather difficult :D.

I like it. I'm not too knowledgeable about terminology, history, dates and things like that. I just know I like what I hear.

Tchaikovsky's probably my favourite composer - I really like Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. Also Igor Stravinsky and Antonin Dvorak have good compositions as well.

I like Schubert and Schumann, Gounod for his operas. I like the gloominess of Schubert's "in der Ferne".

I love Tchaikovsky. Recently got to see kazakh ballerinas dancing to the swan lake pas de deux. I was so mesmerised, I always thought it was obnoxious and pretentious but not anymore.

Also,

As for piano. I like a lot of artists but I'm very bad with names. I like some of lizsts etudes.

I feel you. I have a whole playlist dedicated to gloomy/sad classical. sad songs are the best. I just don't understand how one person can hear and feel so much emotion in classical music and others blast it because its just noise. I think it takes a certain level of musical understanding or emotional investment to fully appreciate classical music. In my opinion many people aren't looking for thought provoking music but rather a simple song to pass time or easily enjoy, similar to modern pop. Not knocking pop or anyone who listens to it. Just my personal observation.

I do! Mostly concertos, violin concertos to be even more precise. Paganini and Ysaye are my favorite violin composers. Orchestral tracks and pieces are a bit too much for me, focusing on an individual musician are easier on the mind and ears in my opinion.

Charles-Valentin Alkan piano pieces are just breathtaking, and one of my most favorite piano composers.

Is it sad that I started listening to Classical music after watching anime like Piano no Mori and Kids on the Slope?

Favorite pieces:

Charles Valentin Alkan – Concerto for Solo Piano
24 Caprices - Paganini

It is definitely not sad. I started listening after I had a class about music theory in college. Changed my life. Because I took that class I was interested in watching the anime about classical music so kind of the same thing.

What do you play?

I used to play violin for my HS orchestra but haven't practiced since. I think one of my first exposures to classical music was Debussy's Clair De Lune when I was chillin with my dad. I typically listen to classical music when I study or work; lyrics really distract me.

So you were supposed to join band or orchestra, but if neither interested you, you did this weird recorder class only (which I did lol). Looking back idk why they structured it that way :/

Oh nice, I miss playing in a school. So professional musician? Would you wanna be a soloist or play with a group?

Oh really, yeah when I got to high school it was just band or orchestra. I chose violin but honestly didn't get really get back into it after I started college. I haven't picked up any other instruments but I've thought about getting into piano. The piano and cello are my two most favorite instruments :D they make such great sound

That's awesome! I've thought about being a professor; there's a certain joy in just teaching younger folk about your passion.

Is your ensemble part of a music-training school or is it like a group in a college or HS or something along those lines?

I wish I could play the violin but I didn't have the opportunity to choose it. I didn't like the piano back then but it isn't mandatory for us anymore and now I like it. Do you know Theister on youtube? He plays anime music on the piano.
The ensemble is part of the university. My friends are in it so we don't have to form a band. :D

I like Pollini. Happy to see he finished the late Beethoven sonatas finally a few years ago, his cycle of Beethoven is probably one of the better modern renditions. Uchida is okay. She makes funny faces.

Chopin is aites, but I feel like often a lot of people, especially pianists, conflate how he good with how satisfying he is to play.

Kind of sad to see that Schubert essentially "lost" the war over the direction of classical music when he died, since he was the kind of natural extension of Beethoven's legacy and classical moved towards the sort of Chopin side of things.

Classical is really the only genre of music I listen to with any sort of regularity. It was probably the first sort of music I was exposed to (since my mum used to be a classical opera singer) and, not only have I never fallen out of love with it, my appreciation for it only grows as I get older.

I know it's somewhat of a cliché, but my all-time favourite piece has to be Nimrod from Elgar's Enigma Variations:

https://www.udiscovermusic.com/classical-features/best-classical-pianists/

This has got to be one of the most poorly conceived lists I've seen in terms of best classical pianists.

There was a poll maybe a decade ago that also placed Rachamaninoff as the greatest pianist of all time. I'm pretty skeptical to that claim, if only because he (and many other Golden Age pianists) got shafted by recording quality and sheer lack of recordings.

But Lang Lang/Kissin on a list, Uchida above Brendel, when you could have added Michelangeli, Pollini, Berman....and dear god where is William Kapell. ;[

I occasionally listen to classical music, not always but I sometimes do. Not super familiar with musical piece names, but I am aware of some composers and famous melodies (especially since I took a music class at my college sometime ago).

Funny story...I got into classical music many years ago because of the anime La Corda d'Oro. I fell in love with Pachelbel's Canon in D when it was used in the series, and it's still my absolute favorite piece today. Love me some Vivaldi music too, he's probably my favorite classical composer.

Currently, I'm listening to a lot of Neoclassical, mainly Ludovico Einaudi. If you like classical piano, I highly highly recommend him. His Divenire and Una Mattina albums are just pure magic.

Ayaka Hirahara is a classically-trained singer, and she provides lyrics for a lot of classical pieces. She sung Inochi no Namae for the famous Spirited Away theme song (One Summer's Day). An absolutely brilliant vocalist imo.

My own tastes are around the romantic - post romantic era of music, with Ravel and Rachmaninoff being two of my favorite composers of all time. Played classical piano since I was little, but I'm no Ling Ling level pianist. Rach's Piano Concerto No. 2 has one of the most beautiful melodies I've ever heard, while Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit has some of the most innovative ways to express imagery, emotions, mood, etc. Personally tho, I feel like the more far back we go in music history, the less I like the music (starting from post-romantic to ~renaissance period). Overall tho, love classical music.

An intimidating project (I want to eventually tackle) for several reasons. It's not just about uncovering the gems: It's finding the notable masters of their era, taking note of the operas or symphonies they produced, and then finding the best recordings that best capture the essence of what the author's originally intended. Much of which tends to be the subject of passionate debate from what i've seen. That being said I do enjoy stuff here and there.

I'll definitely keep my on the thread for recommendations.

Yeah it's probably one of my favourite music genres? Granted it's kinda weird grouping all this music from Bach to John Adams (the composer not the American founding father) under the same music genre. Lots of variation.

I guess some of my favourites come from mainly the Impressionism period of course the big name being Debussy for that period. I also like Stravinsky, Holst and Mahler who I guess fall under Early Modern classical music? I guess it's pretty normie but Clair De Lune is probably one of my favourite pieces not even just within classical music but favourite all time piece of music.

I am trying to learn some Liszt on the piano as of the moment.

Honestly, I think Uchida's Schubert is fairly uninspiring. Her Mozart is a bit better, but overall as a pianist I think she's really only good at making faces at live concerts.

Pollini is very enjoyable to watch live, though, and he has a pretty unique piano compared to most concert pianists out there which is nice.
