Finally up to date with this anime! I've read a few comments on this page that explained a few things I was confused about, but I still think this was a confusing episode.

My first question was "why the hell is this country (Yamato) invading the country from the previous season (Tuskuru)? I thought I had skipped an episode because there didn't seem to be a single indication why Yamato would want to invade Tuskuru.

Second, the entire second half, two thirds between Haku and Kuon made no sense to me. At first I thought Kuon was missing (the last episode was Haku learning about the world's history, so the last time we saw her was 2 episodes ago when all the guys were getting drunk). But then it seemed like all the girls were trying to keep him from finding Kuon. And then Karula (I watched Utawarerumono dubbed, ok?) showed up and Haku starts drunkenly complaining about work? And then Kuon showed up like nothing was wrong.

I have no idea why that crowd of women was running from Haku, since that was before he got drunk.

And I have a few other quibbles, too. Why does Oshutoru look just like Hakuro from the first season? Apparently the latter is still alive and ruling Tuskuru.

Lastly, this anime's second part of the name is "Itsuwari no Kamen", or "The False Faces". However, I think "Kamen" can mean "mask". When they first mentioned the masks that gave the users superpowers (I think Vurai might have used one in the fight against the Uzuurusha). I was wondering if there was going to be a plot about false masks or false mask users, but that hasn't seemed to come up once in the series.

So people are saying Yamato's emperor wants to dig up the Iceman, or the experimental human from the old race of humanity, in order to turn the curses back into humans. But that would require them to dig up his grave in Tuskuru. I do remember that Hakuro was one of the experimental humans who was born after the initial disaster, as revealed in the first series. And even though I thought Hakuro was still alive and ruling Tuskuru, and that I don't think this or the past episode did a very good job f explaining the point of the invasion, I can accept this information as factual.

But this is the exact problem I had when watching the first series. It felt like it was progressing nicely until the point when they started introducing the mechs. I guess this was leftover tech from the past age of humans? The last arc with the emperor trying to unite the world through war, learning Hakuro's past, when I watched the last few episodes, I felt like I didn't have enough information in the story. This is the same problem I have here, with Haku's origins and the emperor of Yamato.

After watching the first series, I finally managed to figure out what was happening through tv tropes or wikipedia or some other site. And I don't kind that for shows like Evangelion, Utena, Serial Experiments Lain, etc. where they're full of symbolism and surrealism, made to be unpacked and analysed and discussed by people. But Utawarerumono didn't, and doesn't, feel like an anime that's trying to be like that. Maybe the show is going for some more subtle storytelling, but for the longest time, this anime looked to me like it was mainly focused on action/fantasy, and then later on, it turns out to have a much more elaborate story. I guess these are points in the anime's favor, but it's still a complaint I have of the show.

Nice episode but theres one thing I'm in the dark about. Why is Yamato attacking Tuskuru? I'm sure they might've been on the brink of war or somethin but is there a reason?

To answer your first question, Yamato, or the Emperor to be more specific, wants to invade Tuskuru so that he can access Hakuoro's tomb probably so that he can continue with his experiments.

For the second one, hopefully the next episode will answer those since it was not really clear. Hopefully Kuon and Haku get to have a proper conversation next episode. I think the reason why Karura made Haku drunk is to ascertain his intentions and beliefs about current events.

I think (and just my pure speculation), Haku was waiting in front of the public womens bath.

Oshutoru could look like him since as said in the last episode, all of the citizens of Yamato are clones the Emperor produced. I assume he just wanted someone to look like Iceman (probably ran out of ideas or faces since he cloned an entire country).

To your last point, I havent played the game so this is another guess but "Kamen" may not necessarily mean the physical mask, it could also pertain to a persona, specific personality or a face a person has towards someone or something. Though interpreting the Kamen as the masks like what the 8 pillar generals have is okay since they are technically all false masks, trying to copy the true mask (Hakuoro's).

This episode was a real let down for me. Too much SoL for the following arc. And it only has 6 episodes left... I have one concern though, is the person who was sitting at the stairs when Haku was drunk Kuon? or was it Touka. I'm leaning towards Kuon though, that's why she suddenly showed up the next day, after hearing what Haku said.

Honestly, it was a boring episode.
I would look at the war, how Tusukuru fight Yamato instead of another cityrunner Haku and SoL with some agony episode.

Come on Tusukuru!!! You are better!!

This. If they had shortened even just the parts where Haku was running around, and showed some scenes of how the war was going (and the general's meeting that was cut), this episode would have been a lot less cringe worthy.

I don't mind boy/boy fantasies and SOL shenanigans, but the director needs to learn moderation (along with many other things), and try to maximise the screen time use. But at this point, I'm not holding my breath.

If there's ONE thing that may make the series worth it for me at this point, is if I get to see an actual scene of Eruruu. At least show her face, damn it!

I wonder if Haku grabbed Karura or Kuon in his sleep (or if kuon just needed to vent)... Seems he got thrown through the roof.

The beginning was pretty cryptic, it is not well understood what was the problem, then little by little it is clarified the situation, but was not given a satisfactory response to the end; it looked as if he had jumped an episode. However, the crux of the matter now is clear: you go to war!
This time the atmosphere was quite heavy, the gags have failed to calm the feeling of concern that hung in the air. I'm curious to see how will end the anime series.

Apparently they cut out a ton of shit from the game...

Why can't they do a loyal adaptation? Like stop cutting out important scenes that will screw up the characterization of the characters! If they continue doing this, the ending might not even make sense with the current characterization Haku is getting!

Characterization for Kuon and Haku >>>>>>> Copypasting VN story

LOL You are really the worst type of fanboy.

I knew this was going to happen. They were putting too much useless crap in the beginning of the anime so the second part was bond to have scenes cut from the anime.

He is not. The one ruling Tuskuru is supposed to be Oboro and it really looks like that's the case. (he is appears in the end of the episode 17 with Urtori)

Another filler and boring episode. I thought that when the first war happened, this anime would get better, but they returned with the useless episodes.
I really hope that tusukuru destroys yamato pretty quickly. I can't care less with these characters.
And yes, i'm also tired of these fujoshis. >.<

Liked the funny parts. Emperor didn't tell the public why they invading Tuskuru, but to the audience it's obvious (or you shouldn't need to ask because you saw S1 and ep17).
Run fujoshis run! Haku in the wrong neighborhood.
Like the difficult & awkward mission Oshutoru set on Haku, just like gutter cleaning, stuff nobody wants to do lol.
Any Karura is great. Surprised she hasn't left to help.
Only confused about Kuon. Why she left, then later secretly hearing drunk Haku. I'm guessing Kuon & Karura wanted to gauge his truth feelings on the war, and drinking helps a ton. He still the same unmotivated loafer. Lol why Karura threw Haku thru the roof!?
"IT'S WARRR!" love how the loli shouted. Few lines so far but she says the best things.

WTF was Kagura still doing there? She should be... well.. And why did they make Kuon smile in the end? (I mean, I kinda get it why but she should be gloomy knowing about the war not so overly happy because of Haku).
Not to mention she would be the first to get imprisoned and made into blackmail thing as having their leader's niece is some really precious war asset.

And if Haku takes everyone with him to the fight zone it would be total and utter nonsense as their kingdoms would likely go very mad to have the endangered and possibly kidnapped.

So much for the logic of this series then (not that there weren't any plotholes before already)

It was already stated that Karura and Touka have reasons to be in Yamato. We do not know those reasons but most likely they take priority over participating in a war.
And why did they make Kuon smile in the end? (I mean, I kinda get it why but she should be gloomy knowing about the war not so overly happy because of Haku).

Its not in Kuon's nature to show weakness or be gloomy. That's why she ran away in the first place - because she could not hide it anymore.
Relying on the bond and family she created in Yamato, and on Haku, she has enough resolve to face the situation and try to do everything in her power to protect both of her families. She is also most likely sure that Tuskuru will never lose against Yamato.

Not to mention she would be the first to get imprisoned and made into blackmail thing as having their leader's niece is some really precious war asset.

But nobody and absolutely nobody knows who Kuon is. Even Haku does not know anything beyond that she is from there. The only ones to know it in Yamato are Karura and Touka and well, good luck making them tell that.

And if Haku takes everyone with him to the fight zone it would be total and utter nonsense as their kingdoms would likely go very mad to have the endangered and possibly kidnapped.

Kuon has an interest in resolving the situation so she obviously would want to go.
Rurutie and Atui HAVE to go because they are stand-ins for the generals who are their fathers. Its their duty.
Everyone else is willing to support them and Haku out of friendship and camaraderie that already built up and has personalities that make sense to agree to it(Ex: the twin thiefswould obviously romanticize idea of fighting for someone in an epicconflict)

So much for the logic of this series then (not that there weren't any plotholes before already)

Except that there are no plotholes and everything makes sense aslongas the viewer does not turn off their brain.
