All right, so I've been an anime fan for years and I'm pretty adept at knowing what to watch and finding out what's current. However, I do not have this ability with manga. How do you discover new manga?

If you want what's new, like what's releasing now, I'd keep an eye on publishing magazines. Shonen Jump is always a goliath, but smaller publications have great content as well. Additionally, if you've liked a mangaka in the past, check out what else they've done, or anyone they've collaborated with! I also follow a couple blogs who report on any new manga that's caught their eye, but it takes a while to find good anime blogs that fit the individual.

Or you could pay for that spicy new content on different websites, but in this economy?? Nah.

Well, there's a couple of ways.
MAL is a great help in discovering manga, you got the reccomendations, other people's lists, the authors and magazines pages and the popularity and rating lists.

You can go to any manga website and just pull whatever tags you want and just look through the covers, which is what I did for the longest time. It's always good to find out some random manga that might turn into a hidden gem.

Recently I've also joined a bunch of discord servers dedicated to manga, MAL's #manga channel is pretty good for it and it has users that I'll help you out, me included, so pop over there if you want to find new stuff.

But yeah, talking to other manga fans is overall the best way to discover new stuff since we can just look at each other's list and go like "Hey, I see you like a lot of Shounen Battle Manga/anime, you should give Lucifer and The Biscuit Hammer a try." or something along those lines.

Go to MAL "top manga" page and read everything that looks interesting to you.

Also, see what manga that's favorited the most among users you know or have similar taste with, read those.

Check recommendations on other manga you like.

Thanks for the responses guys, it really helps a lot. It kind of sucks that you need to be subscribed to magazines to find the new stuff, that sounds like a lot of efforting, but at least you reap the rewards

I've been steadily getting into manga via my library. I'll just peruse what's on the shelves and then do some basic research on MAL. Seems to have been working as I've read more manga in the past 10 months than I have in the past 5 years.

Pretty much what the above members said. I also occasionally go into comic shops and randomly buy volumes of series, and stick to them when the material is to my liking. But tbh... as an avid reader, who also collects lots of stuff, I'm not that choosy. ;/

Buy stuff, or buy at least your favorites if you can afford it - Don't be lame.

MAL is far from being my primary site for literature, which is why I’ve stopped doing single-chapter updates. Baka-Updates and two French sites are far superior—more detailed, complete, and less restrictive. They're perfect for manga, light novel, and book collectors like me, making the process much less stressful and tiring. -g-

They sell Manga in your town? You can't buy any of that stuff here where I live. We don't even have book stores where I live, so Amazon/eBay are my only choices.

i got into manga by reading the manga vers of anime that i really enjoyed- so like koe no katachi for example, after finishing the movie i went and found the manga and read that.

usually apps like mangarock will have a "if you liked this, youll like this__" if youve read something which is a good kind of rabbit hole you can use to get into manga. like i found kings game through reading judge. hope that made sense lol

and obviously check this page https://myanimelist.net/topmanga.php

or if you want to find new ongoing manga then try to lurk on reddit /r/manga

the bookstore i use have a system similar to netflix in which it recommend manga similar to the one i checked, and they also let you easily check different series from the same author.
You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/.
The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish.
Show your support to your favorite artist if you can!
ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name.

Where I live bookstores only have whatever's the most popular stuff, usually tends to be shounen which doesn't appeal to me at all. It's especially unfortunate since I vastly prefer when manga is in physical form as opposed to digital.

But you probably have a vast selection assuming you live in a developed country so go with that.

I read a lot of oneshots and general short story collections, because that gives me a quick idea of what authors might be worth paying attention to. If I like their oneshot/s, I go and look up everything else they've made and add whatever looks interesting to my PTR list.

I have semi-local Barnes & Nobel (there is at least one in two of my neighboring cities) that I tend to go to and browse. I usually go, look around, check out the art of the ones I've never heard of before, and if the story synopsis seems awesome, I'll buy the first volume. If the first volume is good, I'll continue the series until I either finish it or if the series loses steam.

If I don't find anything that the B&N can show me, I'll just go online and google "manga like [insert awesome manga series here]" and look around. I've found plenty of great manga by accident, I'll admit that I've also found some bleh manga the same way.

If I'm not recommended a manga series to get into, I'll usually just look for ones specific to the genre I want to read about. So if it's martial arts, I'll look up lists of martial arts manga, and pick one from that list that looks the most appealing to me. :)

The way I browse for manga is here in MyAnimeList. When I read a manga, I go over the recommendations and browse the manga there, looking if the synopsis match my tastes (or if the art is cute haha).

That process takes long, but I'm patient enough, and I'm having fun with it.

There are many ways I use to find new manga to read, including

1. Using advance searching in a site of online manga based on the criteria I want (like completed/on going, its chapter, genre, demographic, etc.)
2. Browsing mangaupdates and myanimelist's manga list through tags I prefer and marking which ones I am interested in, I usually write things I want to read in my pc. I hardly update my PTR list.
3. Surfing on google what kind of manga I want to read. This leads me to some threads on some forums like mangaupdates, myanimelist, reddit, etc.
4. Taking a peek on list of manga released in the magazines in Japan. I usually take a peek at Seinen ones.
5. Checking authors' page (only authors whose manga I've read and like), either their pixiv, twitter, or mangaupdates.
6. Checking my favorites manga pages's recommendation in myanimelist and mangaupdates.
7. Asking recommendation with some criteria on online forum.

I can list the ways I end up with new manga:

- Browse Top on MAL
- Browse forums, especially something like "help me find" and if something sounds interesting I might give it a go.
- Youtubers
- /r/manga on Reddit
- recommendation from titles I already like (I don't use this that often).
- Just browse a random reader website and click on anything with a remotely decent title or front page and read the description.

I have to big a backlog to even think about finding new ones atm, but hope you find something good to read.

A lot of sites that offer manga usually have a list of the latest releases. You could also try Googling things like 'Best Manga in 2019' or something like that. The best way I've found is really to ask around. Ask friends who know the kind of stories you like to recommend you something that's within your wheelhouse, or something that they enjoy.

The site I read manga from shows the updated mangas on its home page. So I go through some of those every other day or so but mostly I scroll down to the bottom where the tags are and pick one I am in the mood for and hope for the best.
Occasionally MAL manga recommendations are helpful too.
Then there is going to something on MAL you have read that you liked and then looking at the user recommendations. Mostly this is shooting yourself in the foot but you never know till you try.

Mostly if I really like an anime, I seek out the manga (if there is one). For the series where that hasn't been the case:

  • Aho-Girl - I read the first chapter on the publisher's website and loved it.
  • Cells at Work! Code Black - I really like the original series, although I was reluctant to read this spin-off at first due to it being 18+.
  • Grand Blue Dreaming - Someone recommended me this series while I was browsing a store.
  • Miles Edgeworth: Ace Attorney Investigations and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - I like the Ace Attorney games that I've played.
  • Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid: Elma's Office Lady Diary - Elma is my favourite character in the original series.
  • The Devil is a Part-Timer! - I saw it in a store after someone recommended the anime to me (I had yet to start the anime at that point). The premise seemed so bizarre that I couldn't help but see what it's about.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - I had liked The Legend of Zelda games in the past, although I hadn't played The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (and I still haven't).

I search on manga sites, like mangafox, under a genre I'm looking for. That's how I came across Chikai no Noah (up on MAL but still awaiting approval), Kasane, Mieruko-chan, and Leviathan. If it's something that's been licenced and I enjoy it, I'll buy it.

Most of the time I watch the anime first, then if I enjoy it and want to know what happen next, I read the manga.
For those who doesn’t have anime adaptation, just search around here/manga site or ask for recommandation depend on what you like. I have a manga shop near my home, so I can ask help for those who work here too.

Personally, If I enjoy a manga i look up what the mangaka has done before if she/he hasn't i'll look up the tags that are in the manga i was reading and find manga from there.

On manga suggestions or recommendations I look up 'what's like x?' and I go into that thread and poach some of the answers so i can read those mangas aswell

It's easier if you know what to look for, I look up the mangaka of every manga/anime I liked, and check out their other works.
I also look up my favorite genres, check out the recommendations for some of my favorite manga, and so on.
If you mean new as in ongoing manga, I usually learn about them from youtubers, but since I'm not interested in reading something weekly I don't focus on new releases.

Adding to what everyone else has said with different methods in finding new manga, what also helps me in finding new manga is in the Help Identifying This Manga/Character thread. I find a lot of new manga unintentionally when I try to help people out in what they're looking for.
Their descriptions or images of the manga would sound and look interesting. So I would wait until someone finds the manga for them and I look it up.

It's funny, but I used to watch an anime and if it was good, read the manga. Trying to get out of that because I could end up enjoying twice as much if the manga series I read are different from the anime I watch.

I am partial to what comes out physically and digitally in my country though. And even better if they have the series at the local library.

I just try to stay updated on my top genres.

That's pretty much it!

What I love the most is going on to a MAL's user profile page and they have a list of manga recommendations. The best type of profile pages I've come across are the ones who not only have a list of recs but they have it listed like "1 volume manga" with 30 to pick from. Shoutout to those people making recommendations easy!

I've come across at least 3 potentially Top 10 Favorites all because I checked out a profile page hahaha!
