Israel has won the Eurovision song contest with pop star Netta Barzilai’s quirky entry Toy.

The Israeli performer was awarded 529 points, beating favourites Cyprus into second place.

Israel wins the Eurovision song contest 2018 – as it happened

The 25-year-old was singing with the Israeli Navy Band when she entered and won the country’s Eurovision selection show HaKokhav HaBa.

The catchy electronic dance song entry had emerged as an early favourite to win the contest before bookies shortened the odds on her rival Cyprus’s Eleni Foureira.

It is Israel’s fourth Eurovision win after coming first in Paris in 1978, winning in Israel the next year and most recently groundbreaking performer Dana International who was the first ever trans winner of the contest took home the trophy in 1998.

Accepting her prize in the Altice Arena in Lisbon, Netta told the Eurovision hosts: “I’m so happy, thanks for choosing difference, thank you for celebrating diversity”

Fans were charmed by the “chicken dance” moves of the choreography while some commentators have noted the song’s lyrics - “I’m not your toy / You stupid boy”- are apt for the first post #MeToo Eurovision.

Shortly after her win the pop star tweeted: “Thank you Europe”.

Eurovision fan JK Rowling, who had been tweeting throughout the show, called Netta “a worthy winner”.

After managing to keep her cool in the midst of a stage invasion by serial invader Dr ACactivist, UK singer SuRie, came 24th out of 26 entries with 48 points in total after judges and public votes were combined.

The 29-year-old was offered the chance to perform again after the self-proclaimed activist disrupted her performance, but she declined.

I haven't bothered watching the ESC for the past two years because A) it's become boring and B) Ukraine didn't deserve to win the 2016 contest but I sure as hell am going to watch the next year's contest because the political shitshowery is going to reach completely new levels. I'm kind of disappointed it wasn't Jimmy Jump that interrupted the British singer

Israel are part of the EBU so they're allowed to participate despite not being in Europe, much like countries like Morocco (though they only participated once in 1980) and Australia (technically they shouldn't have the right to participate since they're only an associate member but the ESC is so big there that the EBU decided to make an exception)

FINALLY someone who understands how Eurovision actually works! I've seen so many comments by Europeans confused why Australia is competing and it's fucking with their heads.

Yeah, Eurovision has been broadcast here for over 30 years and because of our huge European population it's one of the most popular annual events on Aussie TV.

Eurovision is meant to include the greater cultural Europe and that also includes similar Western Countries like Israel, but also other Christian-coined Countries in the Caucasus and former Colonies of France.

Haven't watched it live, but kudos to the Italian Performer for singing in Italian. Our whole Songs have become plain boring ever since we've started to sing only in English, which is why we cannot have something like Dschingis Khan's "Moskau" or Nicole's "Ein bisschen Frieden".

Even music-wise, I feel like Pop Music has greatly regressed. I've almost got bleeding Ears from Israel's Performance.

Else, read about the UK's Performance and the Song is compared to Israel's, Austria's and Germany's Entries much better, plus she showed quite the Professionalism. She deserved much, much better.

Yeah, that German-Hungarian Co-Operation is something where I would more than agree with Multiculturalism, also given their History. Some of the Hungarian Football Players in the "Golden Team" had German Roots.

btw.: The Song "Moskau" is quite well-suited for a Military Performance in Moscow:

Oh well, thx for the explanation. In any case i don't really follow the contest. But still, looks strange to see Isreal between all Euro countries.

Also Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy) started in Israel this year...

@Noboru That's because Italy often sends the winner(s) of Sanremo (italian song festival) to Eurovision. The songs are all italian but sometimes they are slighty modified for the contest with some lines in english, like the refrain. (they are called eurovision version, never broadcasted outside of it)

I think italian songs always lose because they put all their effort in the song only and not that much in the presentation, which is very important to the contest judges. You see, in Sanremo the "visual catchiness" of the presentation isn't evaluated and so singers don't even care: a big mistake in ESC.

You're welcome and I find Israel a bit stretching, since I assume "European" as something of Christian Origin.

Giro d'Italia was your Country's Tour de France-like Bicycle Race, right?

@Trasimaco: Ah thanks for that Background Information. So you Guys have a national Pre-Contest. No Wonder why you get decent Songs. Though, I think, we also had one when Lena won the Contest.

I believe that the Scores are mostly politically manipulated motivated. Otherwise, you cannot explain how a Song as bad as the one by Israel's Representative could win, while the much better Song of the Performer for the UK could gain only so little Points, despite her absolute professional Performance.

@Noboru I always thought ESC was a little bit rigged (since the last 10 years at least) because of political dietrology.

Italy and UK are (were) secure allies with strong european sentiment so better let some other newcommers shine to improve relations.

For the similar political reasons I think non-Euro countries were included.

This very attitude is used in serious politics (honestly being butthurt about something as trivial as ESC is stupid) and is leading to the alienation of several countries. Italy is drifting away from Europe in the same fashion as the UK.

Will EU survive a union without big countries like Italy and UK? (Pardom my OT, no need to answer)

That answers how Ukraine and Israel could win the ESC, but not how Germany could win the ESC 8 Years ago.
I mean, Lena's Song was alright and she had the Attractiveness Bonus, but she can't compare to Nicole who hit the Nerve of the Time with her Song about a little Peace.

One explanation is that ESC became political only in the last few years, the other is I'm simply worng.

I wouldn't say you're completely wrong, it's just the Explanation you gave that wasn't satisfying.

First and foremost, it's been quite common for neighboring Countries to vote for their respective Neighbors and in Germany's Case to vote for Turkey, since there are so many Turks participating and obviously, they'll vote for their Homeland.

Secondly, I would not exclude the Possibility that it was politically willed to have Germany win the ESC, especially to get more public Support in Germany for Europe, especially since it was at the Height of the European Debt Crisis. If anything, I would say that the Possibility of Germany going out of the EU is far more dangerous for it it than the UK and/or Italy exiting the EU, since more Countries in Europe are economically dependent on Germany, plus Germany is right in the Middle of Europe. Although, if not only the UK, but also Italy quits, then it will be hard to keep the EU from not breaking away.

Yep, and it's now the first major European tour to have started a route outside Europe. Pretty funny innit?

I think Eurovision was better than usual this year tbh, quite a lot of good entries

If it had been up to me I would probably have preferred Cyprus over Israel but they were both good. And I also think that while Netta's performance was fairly controversial, it was presented in a way which was actually fun to both watch and listen to, which was a pretty clear difference to the absolute political BS that Ukraine pulled when they won 2 years ago

It's rather sad than anything. That the Concept/Borders of Europe can be expanded is one Thing, but Italy is quite clearly depicted on Maps. Should have renamed it to "Giro a Italia" (or whatever the right Preposition for "to" [Country] is).

Idk why Italy even bothered coming back to this contest. They always have the highest chance to win yet are always unfairly treated since 2011. Turkey were smart for quiting.

Italy actually quit for a long time. It particepated every single year from 1956 to 1993 (except for 1982) then stopped, returned in 1997 once and then definetely quit. No official reasons were given but it was quite obvious: no interest from italian viewers. In the 90's musical programs were in crisis and were cut. (Only Sanremo Festival went on without problems and for a fun fact ESC is based on it)

Then Italy was caught in the X-Factor storm and suddendly eveyone watched musical programs. Broadcasters immediately thought back at the ESC as an opportunity to cash in.

Italy came back in 2011 as one of the BIG FIVE, so actually we are one the major contributors to ESC.

I think that until italians keep watching it, Italy will keep partecipating, no matter what the final results are.

The Dutch made a parody.

Look at me, I'm the sweetest little country
World leaders like to eat from my hand*
And I kiss all the problems goodbye
We're throwing a party, are you coming?
Coming soon in the Al-Aqsa mosque
It will by empty by then anyway
From Haifa to the Red sea
There's fireworks and kosher satay
So dance along to my music
If your country is surrounded by stone-throwers
Then build a wall from which even Trump would get wet dreams

Throw a Buk, yeah
Throw a Buk missle

(Refrain)
Look at how beautifully
I'm throwing bombs
Again, yeah,
Israel wins
70 years long
Is this party going on
Look how beautiful(ly)

Nope, didn't think so
No Palestinian may enter
Nope not on my land, I'm a strict door-bitch (female bouncer)
I make Palestinians mad
It's my party, I'm supposed to shine here
Is your party being crashed by radicals?
Then open embassies, make sure that you cash in on it
*sound of money*

Look how beautifully
Look how beautifully
Again, yeah
Israel wins
70 years long
Is this party going on
Everytime, yeah
Israel wins
70 years long
Is this shizzle going on

I'm the sweetest little country
The entire world is still eating from my hand*
Isn't that beautiful?
I think It's beautiful
Damnit
Beautiful

*To eat from somebody's hand is a Dutch poverb for being dependent on somebody

Israel be mad
