-SPOILER-
Don't read it if you haven't completed Clannad!
----------------------------------

Allright, I don't get it why Nagisa is like -poof- suddenly pregnant and they havent even kised once. I was like, shocked? XD
I thing those two have kinda an uncommon relationship.
Don't you think?

Mod Edit - Might be better to put the spoiler warning in the title ^^
Also I moved the thread to Clannad AS discussion.

The pregnancy is unexpected since it shows no sign of having that kind of relationship.

The problem is, how old are they did they do it?

I'm pretty sure it's a Japanese culture thing. They're incredibly private with things like kissing and sex. So maybe by not showing them kissing they're emphasizing this fact? idk.

Yeah, I was kinda surprised at that part too, I was like:

Just because we don't get to see it doesn't mean it didn't happen.

I did find it strange that the farthest you saw the relationship go was them holding hands (still being shy about it too) then all the sudden you hear of them having sex..its like woah..big jump.

Yeah... basically what Baman said. Gotta admit, I was thrown off guard by that to. Then, I figured that maybe the guys at KyoAni didn't want to show the physical side of things and focused more on the "romantic" aspect, If that makes sense.

Well, it's a private thing. You don't need to engage in public displays of affection (being the public us) to have sex.

But I guess Nagisa just cleaned herself with Tomoya's towel and it happened.

Because a clannad specific forum doesn't exist...

To answer your question, I'm actually the father, not Tomoya.

It's not much of a culture thing, imo, but just a bit bad of directing the show. A timeskip of maybe like a year or so is perfectly fine, but Clannad never did it. A timeskip first when Nagisa graduated, then another timeskip when Nagisa becomes pregnant. A subtle label indicating "A year has passed..." would've made it far more realistic than: Graduation from high school -> married -> pregnant within seemingly less than a month.

I personally did not cared if they didn't show them kissing though. Would've been a great fan-service scene, but it isn't completely necessary. I don't think Sanae and Akio ever kissed on the show either? And they've been married... for so long. This might have been the culture thing though.

Maybe, but it's definently NOT like western. Ever seen Dutch movies? You don't want to see that. It's full of sex T_T"

Maybe Nagisa said yes so quickly to get married cuz she was pregnant, that makes sence?

I'm pretty sure she *did* it after she agreed to get married. After all, Tomoya asked her when he didn't get the promotion and was angry about his father for it. Then, I think, maybe in the same or the next episode, the "ecchi" thing which she said she was doing occured. They could've did a timeskip of Tomoya getting the job and like after a year, was going to get the promotion but didn't, thus asking Nagisa to marry. Then a year after with marriage. Iuno. As I said, it would've been a nice subtle touch, but I guess it wouldn't have raised or lowered my ratings anyways.

I would think this is pretty obvious but they've had sex, you just get get any details on it. They've been married for at least several months. Though I did not have the same problem (mainly due to the feeling that Tomoya's narrating gave), many viewer may not be aware of the timeframe since the show does not specifically state it. Each episode does not cover a day, it covers their life together which can be at least several days per episode.

The game is much more specific. Not specific enough to actually show the sex scene but specific enough to actually depict them laying in bad and Tomoya saying "We made love for the first time." It took them quite a while after they got married before they actually DID it. I think this has to do with Tomoya's consideration for Nagisa's personality more than anything since he was quite quick about trying to get into Tomoyo's pants during her route. Tomoyo is much less timid and accepting of Tomoya's intimate advances.

Few things:
Clannad isn't explicit anime.
Nagisa and Tomoya are quite shy couple.
Their relationship is pure.
Nagisa said she wanted a baby.
Clannad makers believe the audience know how babies are made as well as that people in their early twenties do kiss but not necessary have to make it in front of everyone and are able to have a baby.

I don't know why some people sort of demand to see two people kissing or having sex to prove that they are a couple specially in anime like Clannad as if proposal or marriage weren't enough. Is it that surprising?
I have a feeling that even if a sex scene was shown (which wouldn't fit the general atmosphere of this anime) and in the next episode Nagisa would be pregnant there still would be some people saying: "How come? Only after one night?" or "How come? In that position?"

I think Tomoya proposes to nagisa when he feels the gently nagisa always supporting him and always there for him (in this case, when tomoya mad because his father behavior crushes his career and nagisa calmed tomoya) not because nagisa is pregnant.

And if you watch it carefully, in episode 14, after they are married, nagisa tells tomoya that she wants a baby. if nagisa was pregnant before they got married, she won't ask that, right?

For people who wonder why CLANNAD didn't give a kiss scene or H scene in it, i think, it's because CLANNAD wants to show you only the pure love of Friendship and Family. And it wants to show you that no matter how hard life is, if you faces it together with someone (Friends, Family, Your beloved) you can overcome it. After all, Spice of Life is This Anime's Genre. So, i think those scenes are not so important to be included. For me, it's best this way. And KyoAni already stated that CLANNAD is free from ecchi things because they want CLANNAD to be enjoyed by all people :)

Spot on. CLANNAD was Key's first G-rated visual novel, so they must have avoided anything implying ecchi themes (well, maybe that part with Kyou; but I digress).
The theme came across clearly with the way everything ended. And what a masterpiece that was.
So yes, I would imagine the anime left out some helpful information as far as continuity of the plot, but it was adapted from the visual novel. Plus, anime episodes are really expensive to produce.

No H-scenes or kisses but why not hug (or something like that) in the bed? They are laying in the bed like strangers. They (Nagisa and Tomoya) don't have money so they sleep in a one room. That's how it looks like.
There were echi/pervy scenes, e.g. with Akio talking about licking her daughter, or Akio talking about his daughter's ass...
