It's getting more and more difficult to figure out what zero two actually is like because on one hand, she seems to like Hiro a lot but when confronted by Ichigo, it's as if she thinks of him as trash.

Seems like there's about to be a massive battle in the next episode... Boy, this show just keeps getting better and better.

So no adult pilots. 02 had more of a sinister presence. I really liked the little character acting moments from Ichigo. I could feel Goro's frustration.

you're "expandable" explanation took a hit with this episode, you don't spend time (in the anime) specially designing each mecha and a team to let them die on the first occasion. My point is still valide : they threw the "valuable" or "special" team (valuable in the anime context) in life-danger just for plot-convenience.
The ones who will die here are those with normal-all-the-same mechas, not the ones with "each specially designed" mechas.

I dunno what you are talking about. We are in different wavelengths here. I said the "Children" are "Expandable" to those "Papa people" which is evident with their discussion. Doesn't mean that the "anime" will kill off the said Children in their first mission by sending them to a life or death situation as a plot convenience. The only character is important to them is probably the Special Specimen they talked about which is definitely 016. But that again, was only confirmed after he rode with 002. One of the girls, 703, getting sent home and even 016 was about to be sent home for being considered useless are examples that if they are deemed useless, they are discarded no matter how much time and resource have been invested on them. Categorically it was mentioned that they never had any contact with those amongst the Children from the facility who were sent out in the past.

Also, I am now convinced that the other girl 703 is probably not gonna make any return in oppose to what I predicted earlier. My initial idea was that they hired a veteran seiyuu for those 3 minutes worth of dialogues, so they simply cannot discard the character just like that and that she would make a return took a huge blow as soon as I heard Koshimizu Ami (703's seiyuu) voicing 016's "child version" at the beginning of episode 3.

Below is the screencap of voice actors used in episode 3. Check the second last one.

It further shows that the Children ARE Expandable to those Papa people. I am also thinking they were lied to that 703 is recuperating in a hospital while probably she is already long dead.

While this episode was tense, I found Zero Two feeding Hiro food in the fashion she did it, to be really cute. =3

But things are getting pretty tense and interesting though. Hiro's now been infected by yellow blood after riding with Zero Two twice, which gives off a hideous looking growth on his chest. I wonder if he rides with her again, he'll become a hybrid like she is?

Goro's already concerned about it. Same goes for Ichigo, who gave Zero Two a powerful slap in her face during their conversation about Hiro. The other parasites from the other plantation have been scarred by Zero Two in the past and they all have in co-operate in the big defensive mission against the upcoming army of Klaxousaurs, with Strelizia going solo during the mission itself.

I'm expecting the next episode to be filled with lots of action and, most likely, plenty of heavy drama as well. Looking forward to it. =)

I find funny people saying they hate 002 because she's being cold with Ichigo.

I think it is clearly enough the background of 002, since her birth, is to be called as a monster, not human, and later as partner killer. A cursed existence.

002 state of mind of not give a damn of what people say and the desire to get out of that place is natural. It could be worse.

Ichigo was actually trying to lecture her for selfish reasons and 002 saw through the act. I saw 002 reponse of "If Hiro dies so be it" to be like "I don't want to talk with you, leave me alone". She did try to cut the conversation and Ichigo grab her hand. Ichigo pushed her luck.

To me, 002 is getting more interesting. It is the kind of characterization that pleases me greatly.

Exactly nothing more to say about that.

Sadly the same people you talk about even misunderstand the last scenes where Zero Two breaks out in laughter. These guys keep saying that she laughed because she finds it hilarious that Hiro still wants to be at her side, stops to care about him and thinks of him as a coward in that moment. Sad, these people should just stop watching the show.

After 5 episodes, I unfortunately dropped it, not because I have any ill feelings towards it, but just simply because I couldn't draw much personal enjoyment out of it. Ep 5 had a lot of really great plot progression, but ironically, what turned me off was mainly that the dialogue is a bit "too serious". I expected something more like kill la kill where there is quite a bit of comic relief and insanity to balance out some of the heavier themes. Just not my cup of tea unfortunately Q.Q Hope others find more enjoyment out of it cos I think it has a lot of potential!
Score for the episode 3/5.

So Hiro's gonna ride to the depths of despair itself to redeem himself. And Zero Two really had that face of total aggression when she was called a monster. One should really consider moral values when defining someone.

If all the kids die before they become adults or something, then how was Zero Two's stamen in the first episode an adult? Or is this just one of those cases where anime just draws an adult and calls it a kid?

Zero Two still best girl btw.

When they said "adult" I thought about the guys with masks. Which is what led me to think that they are viewed as inferiors/disposable by those adults; whom might be the real humans, while they aren't normal humans. The conversation between Ichigo and 02 also sorts of hints to the fact that they might not be normal humans.

Interesting development in this episode, especially with Goro & Ichigo... They seem to experience emotions they are unfamiliar with. There is more behind these kids than meets the eye.

That infection like thingy on Hiro seems nasty, most likely the cause of the massively increased "yellow blood cells", but am sure curious what it really is as Zero Two called it beautiful.

I'm honestly enjoying the hell out of this anime right now. I can already feel their personalities growing. Maybe not all of them, but Mitsu's issues of inferiority with Hiro are really interesting. Ichigo is irritating, but I can understand that she doesn't really understand why she's being the way she is. Goro is my favorite character, for sure. The pain on his face as he watched Hiro was so emotional. I definitely think this has the potential to be very good. I can only hope it fulfills my expectations.

One of the best episodes so far. It feels like they’re finally setting up some interesting themes besides the ones about intercourse. My biggest issue with the show is how there seems to be a lot of potential and teasers of interesting thematic motifs, but nothing has come out of them. I’m expecting something big to happen that changes everything and turns the show darker, similarly to GurrenLagann and Kill la Kill.

Also: could two male parasites pilot a Franxx together?

This episode was ridiculously good. Now THIS is how you do great character development. Goro and Ichigo's development were particularly strong here, whilst also showing how callous and cold Zero Two is. The first four episodes were alright to me, but this one was amazing.

Wow, this episode was way better than I ever thought possible. The animation, cinematography, dialogue, and character development/interactions were amazing. If all DITF episodes could be directed like this one, I would be the happiest girl in the world.

But this episode was also a very tough pill to swallow due to some....surprising revelations that I was not expecting. Goro and Ichigo get some needed screen time, but the real essence of this episode, to me at least, seemed to be about 02′s possible dual nature and how Hiro is finally feeling the effects of his decision from ep 1.

Starting with Hiro, I’m happy that he’s come a long way; he’s now a part of the group, he’s being respected again, and feels that he found his purpose. Sticking to his decisions, even though it will kill him down the road, is really admirable and make me like him even more. But in this episode I felt that he was being “dragged along” by 02. Not even once did he question himself “what the heck is this blue blob?”, “why does it hurt so much?”, “does 02 know about this?”. He doesn’t even seem startled at 02′s lack of empathy towards her allies, or to her twisted way of seeing his suffering as “beautiful.” I would’ve liked a little more perspective as to what was going on in his head. But that didn’t make the episode less enjoyable. Through his gestures alone one could see both his pain and resolution.

Now, to 002: where to even begin? She is clearly the talk of the town, because here we get to see the other side of her. Or is it her true self? Is the 02 we see at the forrest talking about Hiro’s death as inconsequential the true persona, or is it a defense mechanism (as some have suggested)? I completely understand her seeing the death of other pilots as no big deal; her upbringing, reputation, and isolation must’ve been torturous enough to make her lack any sense of sadness or remorse. Who knows how many partners she has had, so I agree with that 100%.

BUT I cannot agree that her words towards Hiro possibly dying are merely a “defense mechanism” or her way to “infuriate ichigo”. First, Ichigo is way, way below 02(to the latter’s eyes); i don’t think 02 would’ve spent an ounce of energy trying to rile someone as inferior and “weak” as Ichigo. 02 could’ve gotten under her skin a long time ago if she wanted. Second, and this is where I struggle the most, if Hiro is such an important essence in 02′s life (he doesn’t fear her, he doesn’t see her as a monster, he can actually manage riding with her), wouldn’t she want to protect him and/or see him as an equal, as opposed to a possession? She hasn’t called Hiro by his name once in the entire series so far, and in ep. 5 it’s clear that 02 thinks that he BELONGS to her, he is HER darling, and she is his partner, and she alone. I love how Ichigo counteracts this with “Hiro doesnt belong to anyone.” So I think it’s clear by the end that the staff wants us to doubt 02′s intentions with Hiro. They want us to question wether those moments where 02 showered Hiro with attention were genuine or fake. Was she just luring him into her, like the butterfly was lured into the spiders web?

Some people argue that 02 does indeed care for Hiro, but because of her upbringing doesn’t want to get too close and be disillusioned, so she sees him as someone who still has to prove his worth. The way i see it, if someone like 02, someone with a painful past that simply longs for a life with a partner, were to finally meet a person who sees her for what she is, wouldn’t she want to truly care for him, protect him, even if he’s not as strong as she thought? Wouldn’t she want to nourish that relationship specifically because of her past? To finally love and be loved? Instead we have someone who is possessive, selfish, and somewhat twisted at the end of ep 5 (again, she sees his suffering as beautiful). Which begs the question, is there a duality that 02 is secretly fighting with? It’s no coincidence that we see her as joyful, caring, and even a bit childish/innocent in the first half of the episode but then cold, harsh, and pragmatic in the last portion. Maybe she’s really trying to get close to Hiro but her old mentality is still preventing her from truly connecting with him.

On the other hand, Hiro’s view of 02 could be interpreted as being just as practical: she allows him to pilot (fly), she has been the only person who is compatible with him, and she has qualities that he likes (being strong, decisive, etc). He does seem to enjoy being with her, but I don’t get the feeling that he feels alive because he finally has a partner; he feels alive because he can finally pilot again, regardless of who it’s with. So I will go on the boat of people who think that Hiro and 02′s relationship is, at its core, a toxic relationship. The way he looks pained at the spider who is about to eat its prey is proof that he knows whats to come. He knows he will be changed in some way or another. But he still wants to pilot. SO lets see what happens in episode 6.

Damn, this was a very solid episode, especially in terms of direction and character development. I feel sorry for Ichigo here... she clearly cares a great deal about Hiro, but the demands of their upcoming mission may practically require his undoing... whether that means death, or something else.

I feel it was understandable for her to get on 02’s case about it (ie negotiating that she go easier on him). Now it’s the question of what’s going on in 02’s head going into the next ep... does she really think nothing of whether Hiro lives or dies, or is there something about Hiro’s condition that she’s kept from the others? I would say the latter is clearly, very likely the case, but just what sort of “transformation” might it be? Looking forward to finding out.

A few points that interested me about the new Team:

1 - They had all heard about Hiro and said that "everyone" had heard of him. They seem to know more about HIro than Hiro or his teammates do. Why? (And the implication was that they knew long before his recent fights with 02.)

2 - The new Team fought along side of 02 two years before. That means that the team members can last at least that long.

3 - One partner can die and the surviving partner can get a new partner. So 02 isn't the only one who can do this.

It all makes for interesting background info.

Another thought struck me during the episode - maybe "Papa" and the other masked characters aren't human at all and instead they are using the few humans that are around to fight their war for them.

Finally - I'm feeling Death flags around Goro...

This was a surprisingly great episode for having no action in it. It was pretty much all setup for the next episode with character and world building and it did a fantastic job at it. It kept a considerably quick pace going from scene to scene to give us a lot of characterization which made the whole cast feel much more alive this episode.(exposition yet to come I hear) Alot of them like zorome, we got shone another facet of their personality or like goro, showing that he isn't always such a steadfast supporter to everyone desires.

We also got a few more mysteries to untangle with what "yellow blood cells" are and what 02 is doing to Hiro. What happens to the kids when they grow up? Why are these kids in plantation 13 the only ones with any sort of personality or dynamic emotions?(shown by exposition of the other kids having identical mechs and by their appearance being very bland in terms of style and hair color in contrast to our main cast) Then still curious about kissing, papa, klaxosaurs, and why they have this system set up in the first place.

IDK. a few people have been praising the director of this episode(apparently she a renowned one) and I'm inclined to agree, this episode had a much better flow to it then the rest of the episodes and gives a lot of different interesting little nuggets to latch on too and keep us hungry for more.

Hmmmmm A LOT of plot details dropped this episode.

I guess first and foremost is Hiro. Despite how they keep foreshadowing it, I dont see him dying. I tend to lean towards what most people are saying that he'll turn into some sort of hybrid similar to 002. The lady/guy soldier people (whatever they fuck they're called) remarked about how his "yellow blood cells" were super high and that he should be dead already, and if not, the next mission probably would kill him. But given how many metaphors have been shown like with the birds that lean on each other and such, I think 002 and Hiro's dependence on each other means something will happen to keep Hiro alive.

Also the other reason I doubt Hiro will die, is because of some of the other big looming things they've hinted at. They're in the bird cage and Hiro has expressed multiple times about how he wants to be free and grow wings and fly away. 002 has also offered multiple times to have Hiro run away and escape with her. That's the first part.

The other part, is that Trigger is pretty big on the sci-fi dystopias disguised as utopias, with mysterious evil rulers calling the shots who are revered by everyone. This has a lot of similar vibes to Lord Genome in Gurren Lagann, and even more so to Kill la Kill, where everyone revered Satsuki and the elite squad and how everyone who conformed thought everything was wonderful.

In this case, it's quite clear that everyone main cast included, idolizes "Papa", and thinks he's essentially perfect and godly, and his wisdom and love are what keep the plantation a paradise. But we as viewers already know that Papa and a bunch of other mysterious leader figures, make decisions on a shady council behind the scene, with Papa being the figurehead of the group. We know that the parasite children are disposable to them in more ways than one: 1. If they aren't compatible, 2. If they can't pilot, 3. If they die in combat 4. Once they hit a certain age (new revelation).

So when you combine the first part with the metaphors between 002 and Hiro, and the second part where the Plantations are actually shitholes run by mysterious overlords that pretend to care about the children but treat them like throwaway tools, and how the outside world is this unknown entity - a supposed barren wasteland filled with evil dinos...there seemed to be a lot of teasing, especially given the 24 episode count, that the tone of the show will switch at the halfway point, with Hiro and 002 potentially escaping and the second half being them vs. Papa and the plantations. Very similar to how Kill la Kill led you to believe the show was going in a particular direction for the first 12 episodes, then drastically shifted in the second half when you learn who the true enemy is and when a bunch of early plot devices came together.

Also since "yellow blood cells" aren't actually a thing, this leads me to believe, although its kind of already heavily implied, that these children that are taken and raised as parasites are probably also experimented on to some extent to make them compatible/stronger/etc

They also basically showed how the parasite kids are pretty uneducated about what we would consider common knowledge and kept in the dark about a lot of things. This was shown when nobody knew what kissing was/meant, and when Goro was talking to crying Ichigo and he suddenly got hit with feelings that he had no idea how to interpret.

We now know that their squad is also more unique than first thought. Now that they met the veteran squad, we see they're all stone cold like robots, only use their code numbers, and all of their Franxxx are essentially the same. They also all seem to know about their eventual deaths too. Which means our groups squad of energetic, unique personalities, nicknames, out of the loop on things and with individual unique Franxxx were put together for an important reason. More-so than what we previously were led to believe. Question is how that will play out later; is it just an experiment by Papa to see how these "different" parasites perform compared to the usual ones? Is Dr. Franxxx or somebody possibly working behind the scenes to look out for these kids?

I feel really sad about Ichigo, until this episode I really thought she's insufferable but now I kinda like her. I'm surprised she had the guts to hit 02 (and the rain also saved her because 02 got soo angry.....)

I like Goro too, I think he'd make a nice pair with Ichigo. Also Zorome with Miku, I'm already shipping them lol. Anyway, I'm looking forward to what will happen next, I hope the show won't fuck up because I'm starting to enjoy it.

Also, Kokoro and Futoshi is also a cute couple.
I am someone that would like to watch a Harem Anime with 2 male leads that each gets their own harem company of girls from the main cast. For example, 1st male lead gets a company of 4 girls and 2nd male lead gets 2-3 girls etc.

and the breakfast scene where Zero 2 is feeding Hiro made the other group jealous... hahahaha...

in this episode shows the aftermath of the battle, and evaluating the relationships between the teams. Hiro was extremely compatible with Zero Two. Zero Two was placed in the plantation for a little while. Ichigo being jealous with Zero Two at the last scene and Goro feelings signs of emotions, pretty much Ichigo and Goro are jealous. Due to Hiro's extreme compatibility with Zero Two, he got like a klaxosaur's blood sprouting out from his torso, maybe he will become a Half- Klaxosaur or the Klaxosaur itself. We can already see that he's devoted to risk his life just to make himself helpful to everybody as you can see he did almost nothing at the first 3 episodes. So there's no way we can back out from his answer, after saying the lines from when Goro found Hiro lying on the ground when he came back.

Worth noting that the kyoryu/klaxosaurs are extremely mechanical in nature; nothing purely organic could or should look as they do. Remember that in episode 1 Strelitzia can be seen ripping cables out from the head of the first klaxosaur it faces.

My comment was actually a parody of the famous "Nanomachines, Son" line that Senator Armstrong says during Metal Gear Rising.

Since Hiro's wounds and Armstrong's Nanomachines looked kind of similar.

So Hiro's got Oni AIDS and wants Goro to not tell anyone about it, what a shitty thing to make your friend to, honestly. Zero Two is also becoming more unlikeable to me, Ichigo was right not to trust her all along and she'll definitely figure out what's happening to Hiro sooner or later, it won't be long before shit hits the fan.

Eh, I actually have MGR: Revengeance, so that video sort of spoiled the end of the game for me, but oh well.

Still, nanomachines is the best plausible theory at this point.
