I'm not really sure...the main character is very bland. I am getting some slight mushishi vibes from the show, which some people have mentioned. But I think this may be more from the "seeing spirits that others can't see" more than anything relating to the tone of the show.
The production values are pretty high, which makes it enjoyable enough to watch, but if Chise doesn't develop much by the end of the season, I'll probably give it around a 6.5-7. Definitely not anywhere near an 8 right now for me. I'm enjoying Houseki no Kuni more than this one at the moment, because it seems to have a much more unique setting/world (ignoring any similarities to Stephen Universe) and despite being CG, the animation manages to be mostly competent.
JLaxius said: I'll state my opinion here. It's true that it's quite early to judge this anime, but from all the material I've watched so far (the OVAs, the 2 episodes, and the manga up to the point where the anime is at the moment), there's something special about this anime that it's hard to find in others. I don't know if it's the incredible animation quality or the various unique sounds that accompany everything regarding magic in the anime, or the chemistry between Elias and Chise. I just love the way this story is unfolding in my screen because it feels like I'm reading an incredibly well written book, page by page. The viewer pretty much discovers the world through Chise's eyes and the way I watch the anime (lights off, headphones on), many times I've found myself so drawn in that it feels like I'm experiencing this first person, and not through my screen. I can't quite describe it though.
Oh, and the opening music and screens accompanying it are 10/10.
This pretty much sums up my views and why I rated it highly. It is like reading a well written book and losing yourself into its world.
I've noticed these type of threads becoming a thing on MAL recently. Anytime a show becomes popular we get the - Is this show overrated, why is this so popular treads.
Guess what people like it, you may not. People rate it highly and clearly you are in the minority. We don't need a whole thread on this because you don't agree with the score

And why are these threads bad again? People in the minority shouldn't be allowed to speak?
People who do like it have no problem explaining why (well, most of them), there's no point in getting defensive.

Post what you want by all means but it's the same thing every season. I can guarantee the same thread or something similar will appear for Violet Evergarden next season.
If you dislike the show that much write a review, it's not you personally but its the same thing over and over it's almost like there's a knee jerk reaction to popular anime these days.

I think these kinds of threads are great. Even if the reason is as simple as pre-screening, having discussion and information available for anyone to find is the whole point of having a forum. As long as the person who made it is earnest, there is no such thing as a thread that we don't need.

^^;; You two should probably keep that discussion in its original thread by @ataraxia... Not that I disagree with you, Kittens-kun.

I'll quote this in case people did not read it. Personally I have not watched the anime yet, but I have been following the manga, and I must say that the way it's written was brilliant. Just like what this guy have said, it's hard to explain what's interesting about this show in words. Its either you understand the charms, or you miss it entirely.
A Beautiful world, with great a character that you sympathize with, the ost is magnificent and the visuals are stunning. What's not to like? I mean the story will progress as it goes along. Magic is also portrayed very differently in this show than other animes nowadays. Magic with charm instead of just being magic like a super power.

I like your way of thinking, especially the last part. Some people seem to have a generally negative mood when it comes to criticism in the forum. I think it's really simple: If you like the anime, just watch and enjoy it, nobody's stopping you from it. If you are uncertain about what makes the show great, feel free to ask in a thread for answers. No need to climb on a high horse and look down on people who "don't understand" the greatness of said anime, just try to give a decent answer, please.
JLaxius thank you for that interesting opinion. I can definitivley see how the way the story is presented, together with the art, sounds and music, creates a fascinating atmosphere for many people. Mahoutsukai no Yome might not be one of my favourites this season yet, but if the next episodes are going to be paced more like episode 3 than 1 & 2 and Chise's character can impove to being less blank, this might change sooner or later.
Well I'm a sucker for rich fantasy worlds. I can see how the anime might feel slow paced or kind of lacking for some people. Besides the objectively more than fine art and OST, it then comes up to personal preferences.
One, the manga is extremely popular. It is in the in the top 100 on Mangafox, Baka, and near the top 100 on MAL. Also, the advertising by Chrunchyroll and the fact that it has been hyped for months before airing. Finally, it is a shounen. Anime fans love shounen, and if it was an actual shoujo, {like another anime}, I have feeling that most anime fans wouldn't watch it, because "its for girls", but it isn't so that stigma doesn't exist.
I can say with confidence, it's as I said in my first post in this thread. 'scenery porn and pretty colors'. this anime is just too damn boring. I'd pick Kino's 'Country of the week' over this.
You hate everything that's not mindless action or nonstop silly comedy- as apparent in every post of yours I've ever read. So...maybe you should stop watching shows that aren't for you?

Obviously looking from good to gorgeous.....check
Voice acting is good right from the start......check
Soothing atmosphere..............................check
A world and characters to discover............check
From the first episode of the first OVA, I was convinced it was worth watching. It was already obvious that it wouldn't be mediocre.
Now I just hope the story will deliver, and only the future will tell but for the rest, the rating is on spot already.

I don't understand why this is considered shounen and not shoujo.
Maybe it has to do with where it was published, but the target demographic clearly seems female.

I'm just trying to save you some time. You seem to watch every show that airs. Why not just watch shows you think you will like?
I try everything because I want to find out whats good. I'm not close minded like you who already decide what to like and dislike without even watching.

can't understand why the show is highly rated maybe its popular otherwise a show that isn't highly rated isn't popular, still depends on the number of raters
so far for the adaptation its faithful and the animation is fairly on point, pretty colors and good ost that suits with the somber fantasy setting. It isn't a harm for me cause I like the story as what I experienced in the manga.

First Shonen isn’t a genre, but a demographic which people seem to not understand. Second the author even said she wrote the story in mind for both female and male audiences. Which makes sense as she does not focus on romance much and does not use shitty Shoujo cliches.
The series itself is not all sunshine and in fact it can get dark as it progresses. Plus Elias and Chise relationship is multifaceted as it’s quite unique.

Nobody in this thread can actually answer the question. They'll either use words with very little meaning (eg. It's a good story!) which raises more questions, or simply say "it's good because it's good". You're dodging the question.
This must be the most intelligent comment I've seen in MAL for quite sometime, congratulations mate.
Everytime it appears an anime with high score there's someone asking this "Why is the score high?", and other people appear with explanations like "beacause it has [this]", "because it has [that]", "because it's good", and so on, which simply doesn't answer anything because it's based on opinions.
The rating is high because many people liked it and gave it a high grade, it's simple as that.

Watayarata said: It's just overrated and I actually hate this Anime.
"It's overrated" is not an argument. To judge a work only by its success and its public is stupid. It is something that is not decided, that does not come from the will of the authors. There are many things to notice in a work before talking about its critical reception.
After that if you do not like works that are successful these are your tastes, but this is by no means a relevant argument.
Same, I think this anime is slightly overrated. These days it also looks like it's easy to please fans with any "philosophical" talk about life and death which this anime if full of. I'm far from saying this show fails as an animated TV series taking into consideration its genre, but still... since I expected something mind-blowing, something extraordinary and something that at least will have creative concepts, I'm a bit disappointed.
I find it's okay so far, but the MC looks to me like the classic angst-riden teenager with almost no charm. The MC to me is not relatable since it's like a unquestioning zombie that just lingers about. She learns to accept her situation and his "owner" pretty fast, which completely destroys the character for me. It's as if she wasn't there.
Lately I've been watching Ashita no Joe and I love what they did to the main character. He's obnoxious, yes, but that is because he has not given up. He is in hell both in body and mind, yet he does not accept it. What is this passivity from the MC of MnY? C'mon, there's a fucking magical world all around you and you're acting like you're 90 years old, bed-ridden and tired of existence? What is this?
I like the other aspects so far, but man do I hate Japanese female character design....

True. The only show this season for me that has pulled that actually really good is Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryoukou
I'm not really getting what the purpose of it is. It's neither humorous nor particularly dramatic, it's putting a lot of effort into worldbuilding, but there's no obvious purpose behind the worldbuilding, it's just "arbitrarily imagine a different world" rather than anything allegorical or satirical or such. The OVAs have a certain emotional hook because being able to see things most people don't and having trouble as a result maps onto a whole host of real situations, but here, the main character just seems to be a thing which stuff happens to.
Even though this thread was created a while ago and a lot of people have already weighed in, I figured I'd add my opinion to the mix. It's totally fine if you don't like MNY, everyone has different tastes, but here's why I, personally, and probably a lot of others like it.
Keep in mind I haven't read the manga, so I can't say for sure where the story will go, but the biggest reason for MNY's success, in my opinion, is because it succeeds in being what it set out to be, which, at this point, is slice of life.
So far, the series has had some pretty solid world building, with each episode revealing information little by little. Having a character like Chise, who is new to this world just like we, the viewers, are, as the protagonist is a plus too. Through Chise, it feels almost like we're discovering this world alongside her. This kind of transitions nicely into my next point, because while Chise serves as a vessel through which to view this fantasy world for the viewers, she also has a personality of her own.
In my opinion, Chise has developed as a character quite a lot in the past 5 episodes. While she hasn't changed drastically, we can see her slowly starting to grow, especially in episode 5, where
she shows compassion for Elias because he was the first to call her family. It has also been shown in the past few episodes that, rather than being indifferent, she's having doubts about dying due to her power.
While she still has a long way to go in terms of developing, for 5 episodes, her growth has been steady. I wouldn't expect a character to grow fast in only 5 episodes anyways, and, because MNY is a 2-cour show, I hope we can see some great character development from Chise throughout the course of the series.
Finally, the art, animation, and sound are solid. The character designs are pretty distinct. Chise's design is appealing, and Elias's design is something I've never really seen in anime and is pretty refreshing. The animation, again, is solid. Because MNY is, in my opinion, a slice of life, it makes sense that there aren't any flashy action sequences, but the framing and angles used is really impactful. Episode 5 had some beautifully framed and animated scenes.
Well, if you got through this wall of text, then good for you, and thanks for reading! While I personally don't agree with the way people rate shows so quickly, (I'm of the opinion that you should rate a show only after you've finished it in its entirety, but that's just me) I hope this helped maybe give some insight into why some people have rated MNY so highly.
Just watched the dubbed version they made Elias voice sound good to hear than the sub and Chise is emotional when the scene calls for it making you feel her pain unlike the withdrawn voice you hear in sub and the side characters are just as great.
You ever watched Natsume Yuujinchou? Ever watched Mushi-shi? If you haven't then I recommend checking them out. However, if magic world, fantasy setting, or any kind of spiritual paranormal does not interest you, I highly doubt Mahoutsukai no Yome or any of the anime I just typed will interested you. One thing for certain is that people as a general FACT likes weird ideas and things. We don't say it, but in truth, it's within our nature to want to know more and explore more. And this anime, ah-man... does a pretty good job on it. Now tell me, what kind of anime that involves a weird looking demon-human mage all of the suddenly, show up at the auction and bid on a red-hair girl for a large sum? If you can answer this, then completely disregard this message. But if you can't think of anything oh so similar to an idea like this, then I advise you to rethink why this anime is rated so highly. Instead of looking by your view of point, why don't you try to look it at a different perspective. It might not interest you because that's simply your taste. It's just not your style and that's absolutely fine. I've taken a look at both Clannad and After Story and I understand why so many people are hyped and rated so high about it, but it won't changed the fact that I wasn't into it. But a more simple answer would be because people likes it. If it wasn't good than people would rated badly. Unless you think this is some kind of conspiracy, in which, people are hired to rate this anime as high as possible.
