Also, "sürünceme" seems to only translate as "abeyance", while there are lots more for "duraklama"



It seems to be the only word that has both the stopping and the "standing still" in a literal and in a figurative sense of being indecisive in its meaning.

yeah just like french words. I'm not a language purist. I think it's really foolish and forced. TDK (the language institute) keeps creating new words for language purists that don't want to use French or Arabic words but it's just waste of time. It just undermines the language if you ask me.

Really? I think it puts some fresh air into the actual language by having people being creative with a translation. It may sound odd at first, but if it gets repeated several thousands of time, it will eventually become a part of the language that would feel closer to it than the earlier import. Plus, you can actually relate to what the word means in its very own parts.

They can still sound odd, even though they had been used countless of times like "Stelldichein" (lit. place you in) for "rendez-vous", but some parts like "Wortneuschöpfung" (word new creation) for "neologism" or "Atomwaffensperrvertrag" (atomic weapon ban treaty) for "Non-Proliferation Treaty" make the terms more tangible.
There are also words that have become common usage like "Fernseher" (far-seer) translating "television" literally, but others didn't quite manage to come through like "Fernsprecher" (far-speaker) for "telephone".

At least, there have been good works regarding linguistic purism such as this one which highlights the foreign imports, so that the reader could be conscious about how many words have been imports in his language. Ironically, quite a few of those international, italic words are now incomprehensible to me, because they already got replaced by native words.
The effect is btw. even bigger with the original script with anything being written in antiqua like the letters here likely to be understand by speakers of other languages as well.
