Was moderation on MAL stricter or lighter back in the day?

Just asking, cause I'm interested. At it's current state I would say the forum is a pretty unmoderated (light rules) one, was that different anytime in the past?

It was less strict. They didn't have the character limit rule, no listing thread rule, no sexual thread rule, etc.

The forum does appear to be relatively unmoderated, but there are so many new rules and guidelines that can screw you over, some of which Narmy mentioned. So in a way the forums feel less lenient than ever.

late 2015 it got stricter

So yeah it was a lot less strict. in pre/early 2015 because one could not scroll through cd without finding a pedophile thread.

I agree with the sex thread rule though since it got pretty bad for a while.

Kinda sounds like I wouldn't have liked the old forum.

Also makes it sounds like there was more shitposting. Not a fan of those threads.

I was told by friends who did come to the forums to not do so due to what a few users said in this thread. Like the gore threads, and sometimes other "interesting" ones. A few friends told me it felt like/was basically 4chan /b/ and then some /a/.

I tried comin' here myself back then, but yeah, it felt unmoderated and not really fun. I want some moderation to be around, but not super duper strict moderation.

I don't know the old forum, but it probably had more to do with discussions getting nowhere.

I actually know some old threads since I randomly came to this site when I was googling something anime-related. Some old discussions were really long, like 25 pages if I remember correctly (and not episode discussions).

Just wanted to know the general feeling of some older members.

Here's what I think of some mods.
Ardanaz- Expects you to follow the rules strictly even if someone infuriates you. According to him, you shouldn't do the same and instead report the person
Shocked- Is lenient and will try to understand why you broke the rules. If someone else broke the rule first then he might not ban you
Brandon- A new moderator. He will ban you if you break any rules, but he isn't too much active when it comes to sniping a user. Right now, he just focuses on locking threads.
Sarroush- Won't ban you for minor reasons. She is not usually active
Aversa- Does not care. He will just delete your post and will probably not ban you.
Tyrel- Usually just lock threads. He is not much of a sniper mod, but will ban you if he sees you breaking a rule
Rawrberto- Doesn't care. He will probably just clean the thread instead of banning you
Ghost- Will ban you if he sees you breaking a rule. He is quite strict, but he is not active most of the time.

These are the mods that I know somewhat
Out of all these mods, the most dangerous is Ardanaz since he is active most of the time and expects users to follow rules strictly
Btw Ardanaz can still show some human emotions, but if you get blacklisted by Tyrel or Ghost then you're doomed
Be careful :)

Yeah I'd say moderation was a lot less strict back in the day, from personal experience.

It was definitely lighter. Was one of the things I really loved about MAL forums when I first joined

Nowadays it's a bit more uncomfortable unfortunately, especially the 30-chars rule was one of the stupidest implementations I've ever seen, but even so I'd still say it's pretty decent compared to most internet forums

Far lighter, and MAL had a lot more interesting people back then. Strangely enough it wasn't censorship that drove people away, it was the pointless rules.

It certainly wasn't as strict considering many new rules have been added and sections of the forums were removed completely and/or changed. Don't get me wrong though, people were crying about bans and moderation then, just like they do now. The population who used the forums on a regular basis was much smaller though and it did feel like at the time you could get away with far more than you could today.

Well I do break many rules and piss off other users so it's fairly natural for you to believe that :p
Btw I have reported many users, but most of the moderators just delete their post except Tyrel.
If Tyrel catches you then you're doomed though we are quite lucky that he isn't online much :p
Also, I haven't seen Ghost in action much. I've only heard from other mods that he is quite ruthless

How can you piss off users when you're not that annoying? Probably CE threads/users flamming each other? If so, that would make sense... :/

Most of the work seems to be done by the new mods though...

As far as I know, Mods will delete post based on this: derailment/flame war/ 30 char limit violation

As far as I see, Shocked have cleaned some thread in AD due to how it went somewhere... :/

Yes
They will delete it.
Rawrberto, Aversa and Sarroush will delete your post and pretend like nothing happened.
Ardanaz will give you a warning and delete your post
Shocked will delete your post, but will only ban you if you said something really extreme.
But if Tyrel or Ghost find out your posts then you should just leave MAL. Your life on MAL is over :p

Well even if they were to delete all the post I've made so far, nothing will still change from what I've been posting thus far... :/

Mhhh... I dunno why Ardy gives warning... Warning is something that comes before 1st ban... :/

Well extreme cases of shitposting can only be done when you insert "bleach" in some various euphemism to trigger OP or will be done in various of ways in "arguing" on some CE threads... :/ Either way, I don't really care about that much... :/

Ghost and Tyrel are the best mod though... :)

It was lighter back then; this is the reason why MAL forums have been getting worse and suck ass the recent years. I so miss the fun threads members used to make back then when the bullshit 30 chara rule didn't exist or the unnecessarily strict moderation we got currently.

To be honest, it's very flexible and inconsistent. In 2015 and beggining of 2016 it got very strict I would say, then got lighter, then It's a little more strict now I guess.

Anyways, it's probably more politically corect.

Do so many here hate the 30 character rule? I actually like it. I mean yes, short answers aren't possible, but I dislike posts that are just some meme picture / sentence. Like no offense to him/her, but there was one person on CE who used a meme picture in almost every post. I would actually like stricter rules on that part, cause I don't see how it adds to the discussion in any way.

I mean you could have some off-topic part of the forum where spamming pictures and so on is allowed. But that's just the way I like it.
