For me it had to be the appeal of a new culture first but also the fact that it offered limitless possibilities. Anime is unlike most shows and the fact that anything is possible in any kind of story can be told whether be happy sad dramatic anything . I've only been watching anime running on five years now but in the process I've watched countless shows and spent countless hours doing so.

The first show I ever watched was either Fairy tail or Knights of Cydonia.

I strongly prefer subbed I feel like it has stronger emotions and you can really get feel the characters better in the language that the show was created in because they have a stronger passion for it or just that they're more eager to do a good job and the people that dub it . When I would watch a dubbed episode I feel like sometimes it's the monotone or wrong emotion that's being voiced like everyone is just happy-go-lucky even if it's an action scene or something.

The Sub is always better.. no one would ever sub par with the dubbed cause it's quite cringeworthy while watching it..

First watched dubbed, i think the first anime i watched subbed was tokyo ghoul. I realized there is more out there subbed so thats what i watch now. If the dub is really good i will watch the dub, like i did with toradora. Also sometimes i want a break from reading subtitles so if that happens ill try to find something dubbed.

The thing that drew me to anime is that its taken where no other western tv show goes. First anime that I watched that I can remember was dragonball z. I dont really have a preference when it comes to dub or sub. If there is a dubbed version ill watch it, but if not then I wont really care.

I watched 50 episodes of fairy tail in dubbed when I first started ran out of dubbed episodes so I restarted series in subbed and never looked back.

Now that I think about it though I guess pokemon was my first anime when it was on tv

A good, solid English dub goes a long way to enable complete immersion.

If there's a good dub, then dub. All the way.

My first anime was Pokemon and Cardcaptor Sakura which were both shown on TV in a local dub. They stopped with Cardcaptor Sakura but continued with Pokemon and later while just flipping through the channels I found Cardcaptor Sakura being shown in English dub on Animax, I didn't have an internet connection back then and I didn't even know that these cartoons were called anime till I found this channel almost 3 years later. I watched FMA, Curious Play (Fushigi Yuugi), Black Jack and most importantly God(?) Save Our King! (Kyo Kara Maoh) which completely drew me into anime. They were all shown in Eng dub. The channel first aired subbed anime when they simulcasted Tears to Tiara. Eventually all new shows were subbed and I started getting used to and liking the Japanese voices more than the English ones.

Later when I started watching online, I preferred sub for two reasons:
1. I like the voices better and the voice suits the characters. Some Eng dubs I've watched were really horrible, sounded like they have tried to squeeze out a cute voice but terribly failed at it (specially for Hayate)
2. Others can't tell what they are talking about I don't like headphones

Well back in 2015 my irl friend asked me if i watched anime and i was like wtf is that "is it a game or movie or what" (LOL). He then told me about what it was and that it was Japanese cartoons and i started constantly talking shit to him constantly calling him every insult there is, i called him childish, a faggot etc because i was uninformed and thought they were japanise cartoons for children. But i started watching youtube videos "why do people like anime" and i gradually kept becoming more and more interested over the next 2 weeks of finding out about anime so i asked my friend for a really good recommendation for me and he suggested attack on titan. I started watching attack on titan and i still didn't like anime for the first 5 episodes while watching because i wasn't being open minded what so ever but then it happened... i watched episode 6 of attack on titan and i was blown away, i was addicted. I had never been more mind blown in my life at how great something was, i just couldn't believe through watching the series how fantastic it was. I fell in love with that show and instantly became addicted to anime, i had to eat my words and i was constantly apologizing to my friend about just how wrong i was because i had never felt so wrong about something in my life. I have watched a lot of anime since 2014, I've completed 85-95 shows since starting anime including 3 long shows which have hundreds of episodes (naruto, bleach and fairytail). I''m also a big gamer and have been since i was 5 years old (currently 19) but anime took control of my life lol and i did nothing but binge watch anime for 4 months straight when i discovered it. I had never felt such strong emotional attachment to any entertainment before i found anime. I was so emotionally attached to every anime i watched but after 2 years of watching anime, unfortunately i no longer feel great emotional attachment to any characters or shows i watch these days but i still love anime :P, thats my story, so yes i was a anime hater turned avid anime fan and otaku. I'm glad i discovered anime because anime opened my eyes and made me a much more open minded person since and im open to trying much more things than just gaming. ps i used to be very close minded. [NOTE] you may be wondering how come i didn't know about anime to so late and that is because im from the UK and anime isn't on tv here and not a lot of people watch it, its much more of a niche here than it is in the US

And for the sub or dub argument, for the last 2 years i have watched all of my anime in dubbed apart from around 8 shows but around 2 weeks ago i switched to sub and haven't looked back since, it was challenging at first trying to keep up with the subtitles but in the last 2 weeks ive binge watched a hell of a lot of shows in subbed so im used to it now and used to the voice and i prefer it now. It took a while though, i wasn't really feeling it for the first few days and thought about switching back to dub many times but im glad i didn't and i now find dubs really cringey and can't watch them at all anymore although i don't hate on people who watch dub, if they prefer dub then thats all good.

Honestly, I was drawn to anime because I was raised in a time when anime was presented to American audiences in the same way shows like Doug, Rugrats, Hey Arnold and etc were presented to kids of my generation. It was on TV and it held my attention so well that I wanted to come back and watch episode after episode no matter what. I was a creature of habit.

My First Show was Sailor Moon. I was ultimately obsessed with the show as a whole and even got excited when Sailor Moon Crystal came out, which I am still in the midst of binge watching big time.

As for the Subbed or Dubbed question - I actually watch both. I prefer subbed however sometimes I will curiously watch a dubbed show just to see how the English Voice Actors do with a role. I'm not the sort to crucify a dub because it's not the original Japanese. And to be completely honest there are a handful of dubbed anime that are pretty good.

Are those supposed to be 3 seperate qeustion or what? Anyways i am going to answer them as if they were seperate.

What drew you to anime

I don't think there is any specific reason why I started, I watched some anime as a kid and then just randomly asked a friend who was a fan of anime if he could recommend me some shows, I watched them and ended up enjoying it so I decided to watch more and I guess this is it. I mostly stayed for cute girls, hot girls and SoL anime tho, obviously not the only reason I watch anime and stick to it. I enjoy other things as well.

First Show?

Dragon Ball I think, tho there were few more i watched as a kid, however the series that got me into anime more was Code Geass.

Subbed or dubbed, whih is better?

Better? I dunno, I don't really care, I always go for subtitles and the original language and that holds true for everything not just anime so I don't really know because I never use dubs unless for some reason I have to.

My siblings actually got me into anime. For years, I always thought they were so weird for watching anime all the time. I grew up watching Pokemon and Studio Ghibli films, but I was never interested in any other anime. Three years ago they made me watch the dubbed version of Sword Art Online, and I actually ended up enjoying it. I moved on to the second season, and then watched Clannad and Clannad: After Story, which totally changed my perspective on life. I've been a total weeb ever since! The first few anime I watched were dubbed, but I definitely prefer subbed now.

Girls Bravo! was the first anime I watched after finding out what anime was. I was a horny 13 year old so I imagine if I connect the dots I know exactly what drew me to it. I watched it dubbed, and only watched dubbed shows for a while, until after Clannad cause the feels made me wanna check out AnoHana which was subbed. Ended up really liking Jap voices too, and to this day I love both.

I wouldn't say either is better than the other. Although I would say there are more bad dubs out there than bad subs imo, while I always appreciate an amazing dub over an amazing sub, or they're equal at least lol.

it was an interesting new thing to do instead of playing games. I'm pretty sure the first anime I watched (where I was aware it was anime) was soul eater. not 100% on that one though. and when I first started watching anime I only watched dubbed. I wouldn't watch shows that weren't dubbed. but now I can't see me watching another show in dubbed, the only ones that I will watch dubbed are fma, dbz and steins gate. subs all the way

Pokemon and DBZ were the first two, but can we really count them? Everyone has seen them.

So I would say Naruto was the first anime I seriously started watching. Watched it all in dubbed and then finished the rest in subbed. Took a few years off from watching anime and was recommended to watch SAO. Also in dubbed.

Now I'm watching a ton of anime and switched over to subbed. It's just usually better. The only shows I watched dubbed were DBZ, SAO, Fullmetal and Fairy Tail.

When I was seven and younger, my bro and I used to like Naruto a lot. Almost 15 years later, my bro decided to revisit it for some reason, so I decided to do so as well. I liked it more than I thought would and ended up watching One Piece since I wanted something more to watch. And that led me to Hunter x Hunter, which led me to FMA, which opened up my eyes to how vast and eclectic the anime world was. I quickly realized all of the big "weeaboo" anime are, in fact, utter garbage.

That is what drew me to what I watch now.

As for dubs v. subs, subs always wins. I have yet to hear a dub I can listen to without cringing.

What drew me to anime?

The interesting storylines...

The amazing interactions between the characters...

And of course the deep provoking imagery...

What drew me to anime?
Nothing really ー_ー I had Toonami, Naruto Cardcaptor Sakura and DB were airing at that time. I watched whatever was on TV (I was only 7 at that time) . I didn't know it was anime until a year later when I started watching anime on Animax.

If I have to state a reason for watching anime then, anime is unique, beautiful and different. There is nothing like it in the world. It can do things western TV and movies cannot. I used to watch anime because it was-and is- one of my passionate hobbies. But after I turned 15/16, Western media couldn't provide me entertainment like anime could. I rarely watch a western TV show. I do watch movies though.
Stories, characters, soundtracks, animation, voice acting - these are the best aspects of anime. I think this is what drew me into it(except voice acting ).

First anime?
As I said, Naruto, Cardcaptor Sakura, Pokemon and Dragon Ball.
I think these shows were enough to get me totally hooked to anime.
Ghost in the Shell SAC was also airing at that time but I didn't understand shit.

Subbed or dubbed?
Ah, the age old question.
The answer is obviously subbed. Japanese Voice actors have a lot of vocal range and their performances are out of this world. I haven't watched an anime with bad Japanese voice acting yet in the last 14 years.
Dubs? I started watching anime dubbed like most people in the early 2000s did. But, once I started watching subbed, sayounara Dub-san. The dubs just don't cut it. The voice acting is extremely bland, devoid of emotion even.
Now that I'm learning Japanese, my appreciation for the language has only increased, a lot.
The only good dubs are Cowboy Bebop(which is actually better than the sub), Dragon Ball and Hellsing Ultimate. I don't care what other people say, but these three anime are the only good dubs.

I was finding my way into the nerdy community in general, and anime was there. It seemed like another alternative medium I can experiment with and meet new people through. Plus at the time, being a confused dude in Junior High it provided a way to explore sexuality and school problems.

I'm not really a fan of dubbed animes, I just find them cringey. lol

If I compare the acting between dub and original version, you know that Japanese VA industry has wide array of selection of voices. They can make every VA fit for the role.

Well, I also started watching anime a while back. I guess the first anime I watched was DBZ way back in 2008 or 07.

And yeah I kinda agree with most of the users that subtitled anime have a better feel to them than the dubbed ones. Cause no matter what genre or even at what platform you watch a show, it's always most enjoyable in the language it was originally created in.

I was introuduced to anime by 2 friends in 2014. They made me watch Shingeki no K. ,Sora no otoshimono and highschool DxD. Then i searched some anime on my own and discovered what would become my favorite anime of all time, The melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Regarding the Dub/sub matter, I always watch Dub if possible, because Italian dubs are superb, and almost always better than the original. For example Steins;Gate : i don't think i would have given it a 10 if it wasn't for the dub(I watched both dub and sub). The dub was simply superior and really expressed the personality and feelings of the characters.

To add to my first post, anime with high quality production values begs good English dubs. Subtitles only serve to distract you from the beautiful details scattered around the tapestry of that show and that's a tragedy.

Recently, I had to constantly backtrack and rewatch certain scenes in Hibike! Euphonium over and over just to both keep track of what's being said and what's being shown. It's frustrating and immersion breaking. I'm glad that I went fuckit two weeks ago and just watched the show without the dub after putting it on hold since it aired back in 2015 but I'm still hoping to rewatch it in dub. It could be as masterfully done as Baccano!, Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, and Toradora! or even just good/decent as FMA:B, Area 88, GitS, and Junketsu no Maria. Either way, I think it'll be even better than it is now.

And I still take it as a point of pride that I managed to get a firm, thorough grasp of Toradora!, especially the crucial Ep 9-10, by watching it in dub while my friends who watched it subbed had to rewatch the series for all the puzzle pieces to fall into place, causing them to go "Huh...? That actually makes sense".

EDIT: Minor punctuations, grammar, spelling mistakes.

Dubbed anime.

Dubbed for Comedy. Subbed for most everything else. :) I enjoy anime like Yu Yu Hakusho dubbed a lot more than subbed. Mostly do to the comedy hitting better. There are exceptions. Like I think Perfect Blue has a good dub despite not being a comedy. and I don't think I ever thought of wanting a Arakawa under the Bridge dub.

And yes, it can make a big difference. I am pretty positive my score will raise when I get around to watching One Punch Man in English. I saw an episode in English and actually laughed. Hetalia is actually funny in both languages and there are different jokes!

Would like to add- been watching anime since 1992. Sooooo totally contributing factor. Yeah There is video of me as a baby singing "GO SPEED RACER GO SPEED RACER GO SPEED RACER GOOOO" yeah. can't get that with a sub!

Like most people, Naruto Dubbed drew me into anime.

I was playing Black ops 2, and someone was named tsunade. Asked him about the username and the pic (of tsunde). He told me the site and taught me about things like dubbed, subbed and fillers and shit. This is what got me into anime.

Right it's like english dub voice actors aren't even trying in most cases. Like maybe they got the script,a couple hints at what the show was about and then without ever seeing it said let's start lol

It was completely accidental. I saw a Death Note synopsis on a TV guide and I thought it sounded interesting. I didn't even have an idea what anime is. It wasn't dubbed but a voice-over and you could hear the original voice actors. I loved it so I started searching for similar shows, then I discovered MAL and there was no turning back. I only watch subbed, I tried several dubbed shows but I never even managed to finish the first episode (whether it's Polish or English dub - they are all cringeworthy). I only saw some kids anime dubbed (like Pokemon) when I was in kindergarten.

Back in the early 2000's I was super into Pokemon, and went online to browse Pokemon fansites and build my own. On the Internet I eventually came across Sailor Moon, Di Gi Charat, Ah My Goddess and these other non-toy commercial anime. I found video clips of Sailor Moon transformations and became obsessed with the show even though I couldn't actually watch it (it didn't air in my country back then). Then I eventually started finding actual anime episodes and watched everything I got my hands into.

Oh and always sub. I may sometimes watch a few episodes of dub but it's just not right if it's not in Japanese.

I wanted to reconnect with my love for DBZ by watching DB GT which I could only find on the internet with subtitles. Once you download one anime, why stop there? I didn't.

And I'd say in general original version is always preferable no matter what medium but I do regularly watch some shows in dub to relax and not having to read. People tend to exaggerate how bad dubs are. Most that I've seen have been decent. But I'd probably never watch a show I really, really care for in dub except for Bebop which I only watch in dub. Most dubs I've seen are actually from the late 90s, I seem to like the dubs from back then. Slayers, You're Under Arrest etc.. Those two shows alone I watched like 150 episodes dubbed and it was fun.

But once you're used to one dub it'll always be hard to make the switch to another. Quality has little to do with it, it's more about habit.
I probably regret this post by now.

I decided to watch anime because it offered things that the Western media couldn't gave to me and I really liked the Japanese style. It also helped the fact that I watched a lot of anime content during my childhood, so starting watching it was easier.

The first shows I watched while introducing myself to the world of anime were Bleach and Blood+ (this last one thanks to Animax, and it was the reason why I decided to try to watch more animes).

I started watching shows in dub, because I decided to start the easy way. Later, due the limitations the dub offered to me, I switched to sub, and now I watch everything that way.

Hmm, what drew me in was how beautiful the art can be, especially for animated movies and how different it was from cartoons. Interesting plot lines, interesting characters that makes you root for them. The genres, shounen, shoujo, fantasy, psychology, etc. Anime brighten up my life! Emotional moments, tear jerking moments, pumped up moments and the list goes on.

First shows I watched was Pokémon, Crayon Shin, Hamtaro and Doraemon, as like all the 5 year olds at that time but the first that really caught my attention was Code Geass and Prince of Tennis. I always wanted a protagonist like Lelouch.

On the subject of sub or dub, I prefer sub. Back then, Pokémon was dubbed in English while Crayon Shin and Doraemon was dubbed in Chinese so for this 3 shows, I am somehow accustomed to their respective dubbed voice and the dubbed soundtracks. However, with the 3 exceptions, I prefer subbed anime as dubbed voices sounds really weird in my ears. Besides, I get to expand my jap vocab with subtitles. Once you go sub, you never go back!

I used to play Ragnarok Online and that eventually led me to its "anime adaptation": Ragnarok the animation. There was no special reason, i just decided i wanted to watch it and maybe see what the game characters would look like in a different point of view.
I don't even remember its story/characters, nor animation quality. But of course i didn't care about/pay attention to any of these back then. The only thing i remember pretty well is all my RO friends trashtalking it.

Subbed all the way.
You can only save a few dubs from the way to hell.

When I saw Kill la kill, I thought ''Wow, if this is what anime is like, I want to see more!'' and after that I started watching a lot of popular anime in dub, because I thought that I won't be able to read subtitles that fast, but after realizing how much I liked the subbed versions, I started to watch subbed anime more often.
Help the industry and buy Blu-rays and DVD's.
Noragami is the best anime ever.

Fullmetal Alchemist (2003); watched it in dubbed for the first ten episodes before Funimation decided they hate British watchers (and blocked us) - so I moved to Subbed because that's what post streaming websites had at the time. I tend to switch between subbed and dubbed depending on my mood and the voice actors involved because I do love some of the English voice actors.

I don't know what got me into anime, to be honest. The only animes that really played in England were DBZ, Pokemon, Digimon... stuff like that. I think it was when my older brother introduced me to Ghibli films.

My dad bought me a PS2 game called "Yu Yu Hakusho: Dark Tournament" way back when. It was practically a fighting game which revolved around the anime's 2nd arc. I ended up growing to like the game a lot, so I wanted to check out the original material for it, and boy was I impressed. Yu Yu Hakusho isn't truly the greatest classic shonen anime for nonsensical reasons. Anyways, I ended up watching that dubbed, because I wasn't really used to Japanese, and preferred shows in my native language.

I ended up watching anime that were a lot like Yu Yu Hakusho after, such as Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, Dragon Ball and what not. After a few years, I grew tired of watching anime in dubbed, because it got way more cringy and cringy, and I just hated it, so nowadays I just watch everything sub. I became a complete Japanesefag, and here I am today about to take a Japanese learning course in order to fulfill my goal of becoming a fluent speaker/reader someday.

Funny how it was ultimately my dad who got me into anime, considering that he has a burning hatred for it because he thinks it all looks...feminine, for a lack of better term.

I got into anime by finding images of anime characters on sites like Pixiv. One day, I started to watch the anime the characters were from. (Fairy Tail and DanMachi)

Regards to Dub and Subs, I actually started with both. Fairy Tail was completely in English Dub and DanMachi was in Subs and I watched these at around about the same time.
I can't say which is better as I am used to both languages in anime, personally I think Subs are way better for cute/moe shows (Love Live, K-On! etc...) and Dubs are better for anime set outside of Japan and I feel English voices fit Western characters better. (Cowboy Bebop, Black Lagoon. etc...)

As another user said before, if you become used to hearing a specific language in anime you feel like it's weird to watch another anime in a different language. However, if you are used to both languages and like them equally, then you become almost immune to the 'Dubs vs Subs' hate wars you get on forums since you like both.
