I was just wondering if some of you differentiate otaku and weeaboos, stating that they are not the same to argue with people that call you weeb. At least to show that otaku are better than weeb.

What I think is otaku watch anime, read manga and light novel, play visual novel and purchase anime merchandises.
While weeb is commonly known as acting like a Japanese and can speak Japanese out of the anime that they have watched. In my addition, weeb are also the one who bought shameful stuff like waifu hug pillow, boob mousepad, waifu figure and perform dirty things on them.

What are your thoughts?

I'm just a self-proclaimed anime elitist.

Except that isn't the correct answer.

An otaku is what we call an enthusiast in English. There are military otaku, sports otaku, and of course anime/manga otaku. Since there is no other context for the word in English it is implicitly implied that otaku references anime/manga enthusiasts.

Weeaboo is slang for a person who denounces their own culture and wishes they were Japanese simply going off of what they have seen in Japanese media. These people generally don't actually understand anything about real Japanese culture and don't really understand the history of the country or the more intricate customs of the people.

well shit

I'm a weeb, guilty as charged

OT: People who want to be called otaku instead of weeb have always struck me as incredibly self flattering for reasons totally unknown

cough

So that tends to rub me the wrong way. Especially since the people who use it tend to try to ascribe a degree of reason and normality to themselves while being completely unaware of the fact that otaku means a person who has extreme interests in specific subjects. Don't like it much.

Jesus Christ this again.

So....a "Weeb" is NOT someone obsessed with anime.

A "Weeb" is someone obsessed with Japanese culture!

Technically a weeb doesn't even have to watch anime to be a weeb....but admittedly most people become weebs by watching anime and getting infatuated with everything Japanese.

No need to get all technical about it and try and out do me. I understand Otaku means enthusiast but almost 100% of its use in the west is talking about anime and manga, that you can not deny. So regardless of what it actually means, it's meaning in the west is talking about anime and manga.

An Otaku is someone who just shuts up and watches his shitty animes.
A Weeb is someone who tries to justify that their favorite animes are not shit.

In short, 9/10 is weeb and 1/10 is otaku... I kinda see that logic now... xD

Weebs are not Western Otaku.

ANYONE can be a weeb if they're NOT Japanese and think Japanese culture is superior because they saw a cartoon or whatever.

Chinese people can be Weebs for fucks sake.

This term made me hate the anime community. Its used so often and only used because anime fans are weak. They gave into the haters who hated anime fans and now just make up definitions for the term and self hate the fanbase. Its become so toxic.

I disagree...

If anything the term "Weeaboo" was invented to differentiate Anime fans from people who are obsessed with Japanese Culture.

I like anime....but I'm not obsessed with Japan.

Otaku isn't a bad term, it's just mean nerd in western.
The only annoying term i have problem is weeb thats getting annoying...
Yes, this term is gross and reflects how bad this fanbase is. I'll go even further: Its embarrasing.

Everywhere you go this term is shoved down our throats by our own fanbase. The haters being haters is one thing, but the fanbase too? Yuck. Cannot wait until fifteen years pass and a lot of these fans leave the fanbase.

@JustALEX - Like I said, fans are weak and anyway, the term's usage goes far beyond what you say. Like OP for example.

Well, this term didn't originate from West but from Japan and there otakus are treated as deplorable creatures.

Hence, use the term knowing the complete consequence. If you plan to use 'Otaku' term out of context to make yourself sound cool or different then you might as well call yourself a weeb because that's what a weeb does - using Japanese terms without understanding the meaning behind them to sound cool.

EDIT: Before you say I am speaking out of my ass, check out the wiki page for that term itself and read the sub-category of Usage:
"In modern Japanese slang, the term otaku is mostly equivalent to "geek" or "nerd", but in a more derogatory manner than used in the West."

Westerners have (again) bended the actual meaning of a foreign term to make it sound cool but in reality, if you go to Japan calling you a hardcore anime otaku, you will be harshly judged by everyone.

In fact, weaboo is more definite term to use when someone is trying to portray the negative aspects of otakus (Eg- being perverted, irresponsible, etc)

It's one thing to like the culture...

Really? Plenty of Americans say this country is shit and want to leave the country. I mean, come on.

I don't see your point.

An otaku is a Japanese subculture geek that studies and enjoys Japanese stuff like anime, manga or anything related to Japan, but not necessarily all Japan-related subcultures. An otaku doesn't blindly love these things, he analyzes them no matter what, he tries to be less subjective as much as possible. If someone begs to differ, he's fine with that. This person doesn't annoy people, it only enthusiastically enjoys and studies these kind of stuff but not to the point of letting go of their own real life. Remember that this is a subjective term, it can range from borderline to hardcore. This term was coined in Japan by people who wanted to make their enthusiasm towards these things known and thus, it's a Japanese word.

A weeb (shortened 'weeaboo') is a wannabe Japanese (or as they call it, Wapanese) that takes almost everything Japan-related stuff and adapt it to their lifestyle or manner of communication at least. A weeb is a die-hard-core fanatic when it comes to almost everything Japan, though he doesn't really care about its negatives or flaws, he just blindly loves it. Anyone who thinks otherwise is shit to him. This person so openly integrates Japan's subcultures into his life (online, real life or both, it depends), not caring for others' feelings as long as he is having fun. Like otaku, this term is subjective, although it has no definitive range of severity. Etymologically speaking, this term came from Wapanese. Then why did it become weeaboo, you ask? Some time in the past, on a forum, someone posted something about Wapanese, but then the term got really abused and overused, much to the forum admins' dismay, so the forum admins changed every instance of the word Wapanese in the page into weeaboo, which they got from this comic strip by another person:
So from then on, people have been using the term weeaboo, and even shortened it to weeb, when it originally didn't mean anything like it does these days. It's a non-Japanese word.

Demographically speaking, well, how is otaku to Japanese is pretty much like to how is weeaboo to non-Japanese now. It's just that 'otaku' had a good start since it aimed to show one's fandom while 'weeb' is already cancer in the beginning since it wanted to change one's life, negatively.

It should go without saying that the two always have something in common, that they can't be completely distinguished, as both are often obsessed with the same objects. The only thing that truly differs is how they treat their Japanese interests in their lives.

^ Good Post ^

Yeah, I never call myself otaku because of the elitist people who use the term to put themselves above others. I seriously just call myself a weeb as a self-deprecating joke. Then again, I do own a dakimakura, so I guess I am a weeb according to some definitions such as OP's lol.

I don't know if you ever went to japan but you sound like you are basing everything from watching anime. Not all japanese people that watch anime are deplorable creatures. No where in Japan did I see a japanese person go up to someone and talk shit just because they are reading manga in the bus. There is at least a couple of people reading manga in the bus/train and nobody gives two fucks.

1. Since you are talking about how the word "otaku" is used in Japan, it could be used for other things and not just anime. You're basically calling everyone that has a passion for their hobby a deplorable creature.

2. I'm sorry but you still sound like you are speaking out of your ass.

3. If you say you are a hardcore anime loving twat and probably acting like a cunt; no shit it's a given, you will be judged.
