I really like how Mugi and Hanabi's relationship is progressing right now. And that smirk on her face at the end tells that Akane is a bitch that pretends to be innocent in front of her students. Open your eyes, Mugi!

Really enjoying this show so far. 5/5 for this episode :3

The Mugi and Hanabi chemistry is cute to the point of perfection and the tension between Hanabi and Ecchan just teases us, this particular new relationship needs a lot of exploration. This episode also delivered some memorable lines. I really really like the way that this show uses philosophical themes to back the characters. That smirk on Akane's face when Hanabi asked her if that guy was her boyfriend said a lot about her character, the manga fans will know, the next episode is about yo be great. In short, this was a really good episode, perhaps the best one so far.

Hanabi is so based at the the beginning of this ep!
Ecchan, I feel so bad for you </3 Hanabi is confirmed straight, so you better move on.
Hanabi and Mugi are so cute, they should just forget those teachers and be with each other. Bitch sensei is bitch. Don't you ever bully my hanabi >_<

Anyway, i love the expressions and the eyes of every character in here. Full of despair and sufferings,

This is gold :

Fuck man this anime just keeps digging its plot and it's fucking incredible!
The Yuri scene was fantastic and the fall out, while shitty, was well written.
Now there's like a hardcore love triangle when you add in the Yuri, but also with Hanabi trying to love Mugi as well.
Man that bedroom scene was....Jeeze.
Mugi is blinded...I've seen guys like this before it sucks when they won't listen to you when you're telling them the truth.

That Teacher seems like a bitch anyway.

Though the Middle School girl that Mugi was banging in the Flashback *thumbs up* Dynamite body.

This might be the most sexually mature anime I've seen. I really hope it does well, and is the start of a new trend. Anime could benefit from a bit more maturity.

Kudos on having having an openly gay character instead of the usual "implied" stuff. However, Sanae's scene would have been better if she didn't shove her tongue down Hanabi's throat without consent.

Hanabi has fallen in love with Mugi, and something is up with Akane. All the love triangles or polygons are making my head spin, but in a good way.

I'm loving this show.

5/5

yeah i completely agree. that kiss was like too aggressive. the representation is good, especially in an anime like this where it's like just "yuri" or "yaoi" and not weirdly fetishized (hopefully).

Taboo Breaker Anime the Anime!
Jokes aside, Im completely absorved by Kuzu no Honkai at this moment, it never stops surprising for how human and natural things are presented. Good moment between Hanabi and Mugi along with his manhood, I kinda laughed about the situation, the last part of the episode made me feel bad for Mugi since we clearly saw him enduring seeing the woman he loves with another guy, the latter marking its position. The last screenshow we saw of Ms.Akane was quite intriguing as well, can´t really judge her, she´s young and just likes to have her affairs, not gonna judge her, at least for now. Kudos for Ecchan for having the guts to confess her feelings too, never easy, unfortunately for her, she´s another one for the drama of beeing rejected and eager to see future implications.
Great episode, so many things happening at the right pace, wishing for more and afraid of whats coming next.

Akane is the worst character of the whole story, isn't she? Please say yes. Can't wait to see her showing her true colors. Will she threaten Hanabi? KISS HER? Who knows. But that was great, I guess.
Also the lewd scene was very realistic. A-ah, my virgin old days (What?). Anyway, really good episode, whoa. And oh my god, I hate people who are in love and can't see that their loved ones are doing stuff behind their back and stuff. Love is... Blind when it comes to these things, just like Hanabi said. And I haaaate it. Anyway.

I think this accurately describes Hanabi's emotional state:

The character relationships thus far are so layered that I'm having a hard time even following them to be honest. Hanabi got so thrown off by Ecchan's kiss that it left her very disoriented and doubting a lot of the decisions she made in past episodes. so I guess it makes sense that I'm confused along with her lol. It'll be interesting to see where her and Mugi's relationship goes, and if and how the bitch teacher fucks it up.

It's like listening to a bad high school fanfic.

Laughed all the way through, amusing schlock, but truly nothing of substance to be gained as a viewer. Heck, it would be just better if it was a hentai series.

I feel sorry for those that jumped the gun on the end of episode 2 and dropped the series. The show did pull a timeskip followed by a cliffhanger, only explaining it the next episode. It had some sort of shock value.... but was it that great? Nah not really

Feels like this episode gave Hanabi a bit more to think about, slick build-up about her having to witness indecisiveness, followed complaining about indecisiveness, then probably having to deal with it herself even if it's only for a second. Not sure if the flashback about what she said to that guy she rejected indicates she said that to Ecchan.

So Hanabi's not the 1st one Mugi's playing the "replacement" game with ~ he did seem to have more experience than her in the matter, keeping more cool & all. Heck, I'm starting to wonder if he's really that interested in Akane. After all, he seemed to be pretty into that girl a few years back. Perhaps he's still playing this game because he's afraid of being left alone or something.

Ok so that was a great episode but there's one thing really bothering me. Mugi not noticing that the former student and the teacher had something at the cafe feels really weird and out of character to me. I had a few idea as to why he said what he did to hanabi but they don't seem really plausible
1- To protect her from being hurt by learning her love is getting cheated on. I feel like he wouldnt really think that Hanabi didn't already notice it tho
2- He is really dumb and didn't notice or actually didn't see it. Also hard to believe since he commented that he saw the guy's face
3- Just lying because he doesn't want to appear hurt. Would make the most sense to me.

What do you guys think about that ?

I thought this was another pretty great episode. I liked how it played the yuri tease from the last episode very seriously. Even if it did kind of kill it before it could get off the ground. I don't know maybe they'll surprise us. Ebato and Hanabi are definitely the most interesting relationship so far. I liked all the scenes with Mugi and Hanabi this episode too. Mugi's flashback was a little weak to me. But how it highlighted Hanabi's loneliness was cool. Really not sure about the bitch-sensei route this seems to be taking. But at this point I'm in for the long haul.

Many very subtle things which flesh out the protagonist characters. For example, going through merely this episode without additional later knowledge, you could easily pick up ~15 new sides/details to Hanabi.

Your problem is: Because you don't care about Hanabi at all, picking up these details is not enjoyable to you. I can understand that. But why are you wasting your time with something you don't care for and don't find enjoyable?

"Unrequited love" is only the overarching theme. But we've had half a dozen characters now with unrequited love who are totally different and act totally different. I hope that you can see at least _that_.
Ya know, after rewatching the ep again. You might be onto something here. But I don't quite get Hanabi's nuances. Like, sure she feels conflicted about her relations, but why doesn't she talk about them with anyone. Teasing Mugi is fun and dandy, yet that clashes with her monologues and mutual embarrassment.
And despite Mugi getting a flashback, I don't get why he doesn't want to acknowledge that Misagawa is cheating willy nilly. And him going back and forth on sexing Hanabi is rather odd for a supposedly horny teen. So yeah, I don't know in the end.

Hmm thats a good way of dealing with a chikan
and thats also how Hanabi and Sanai met eh

Hmm so that explains their close relationship then
Before meeting Hanabi Sanai was a pretty quiet person
that didn't have much friends or love of any kind

Hanabi though is quite pure in that she looks at more than just the stats
lol Sanae
wow to think that Sanae can be that bold though lol

Its surprising that she would be bold enough to take that gamble though
But at the same time its also nice that Hanabi can tell her secret to Sanae as well as they are best friends after all

Hanabi is still in shock that Sanae actually confessed her feelings to her
Lol Hanabi just walking right past Noriko
I guess everyone wants their crushes to be with them eh
Noriko's always so dramatic though lol

Hmm so Hanabi recognizes that at this time she's just running away eh
lol boys and their school crushes
hmm it's nice to see the past events for both characters including their past romances

Lol after having such a vivid dream Mugi finds Hanabi staring right at him
Terrible timing indeed lol

Hmm so Mugi's friend did not go to high school with him eh
She's also pretty perceptive in that she saw that Mugi was in love with Akane
Hmm so both Hanabi and Mugi have their own worries then eh

Lol but Mugi remembering his first time while Hanabi wondering about Sanae

ah meeting your crush this late eh
plus the guy that she's with looks a bit young
yea a younger brother thats really attached to his sister is quite the stretch

Hmm it seems there's also another side to the sweet Akane sensei eh
Mugi has too much faith in Akane though and just as Hanabi said love can be so blind

Lol so now both Hanabi and Akane have their own secrets eh
So it seems there's more to Akane than expected eh

Overall a good episode that focused on the feelings between the main cast. It was nice to see the past events for Hanabi and Mugi and at the same time see how Hanabi and Sanae actually met. It was surprising that Sanae actually had feelings for Hanabi though and that she was bold enough to confess these to her. It was surprising that Akane actually had another side to her personality though not entirely unexpected.

So now we know how they became friends. Only 5 minutes in and we got right back to where we left off. Ecchan went in deep with them kisses and emotions, went ahead and confessed and everything. And then some awkwardness with Mugi as a bit of his backstory was given and some... things happened. Clothes were soiled. Things get more awkward. Love is a difficult thing. Seems the female teacher is messing around with people other than the male teacher. This train is already falling off the tracks, hasn't crashed yet, but it's got several wheels off. Feels like a ton of crap has happened, but the episodes go by quick and it's only the third episode.

I had a cup of coffee next to me to drink while watching this. Forgot all about it like 5 minutes in. Now it's warm.

Well, she does talk about them with Mugi. And, she also tried to talk about them with Ecchan, triggering her unmasking. The two schoolmates and their "love light"-problems don't really count.

Look at it from this angle: All characters in this story have "less than perfect" romantic desires, and they start out as templates for different types of unrequited loves. Disclaimer: This is restricted to the knowledge of anime episodes 1-3. This will significantly change in the near future.

Hanabi: The friendzoned osananajimi. Has a serious and deeply felt love, but feels that she cannot openly confess without risking the loss of her relationship with "oniichan", while she can always be by his side as long as she maintains her "little sister" role.

Mugi: The juvenile loving an adult. Who is sexually experienced and quite relaxed (compared to Hanabi), but who desires someone from a different maturity bracket.

Ecchan: The homosexual lover. Who strongly desires someone very close to them, but who is afraid of coming out and risking their current relationship. It's a variation of the Hanabi template, but in stark contrast to her, she DOES confess.

Moca: The pure idealized-fantasy princess. Who lives in her own fantasy world centered around her, and who strongly desires the "prince" to play his role. Very open, very possessive.

Akane: The masked two-timer (only hinted at in ep3 - I leave it at that for now). Who seems to have a prim-and-proper outward facade and seemingly another inner personality which seems noticeably different. I don't want to talk about her now, we'll get to know her much better in episode 4.

Leaving out oniichan, because he hasn't been properly introduced yet.

See where I'm getting? The story shows us very indepth via onmiscient inner voice what these people think, feel, what their desires are and why they do what they do. This clears away potential ambiguity in interpretation, you rather know for a fact. The drama is created by showing their personal dilemmas, and their (unsuccessful) attempts to fix them. THIS is the core of Kuzu no Honkai. And if you don't at least sympathize with the characters, and their dilemmas leave you cold, then it is extremely difficult to enjoy the show. Because this is a story of painful trial-and-error, not glorious successes.

Teasing Mugi is fun and dandy, yet that clashes with her monologues and mutual embarrassment.

It is not Hanabi's intention to "tease" him. Keep in mind, their original plan was to act as substitutes for their mutual unattainable loves. Remember Hanabi's "oniichan" sighs when Mugi petted her in ep1, or Mugi's "Akane-san" when Hanabi stroked him in ep3. It's primarily a surrogate action. Only that in ep3, Hanabi was showing hints of wishing to give up her oniichan dreams and be with Mugi "for real". That was until she realized that Akane was not what she pretended to be.

And despite Mugi getting a flashback, I don't get why he doesn't want to acknowledge that Misagawa is cheating willy nilly.

Good of you to pick this up. Wait for episode 4, which will explain it indepth.

And him going back and forth on sexing Hanabi is rather odd for a supposedly horny teen.

They're surrogates for each other. When Mugi had his boner stroked, he was dreaming of Akane. At the same time, as silly as it may sound, he is a caring gentleman. He does not want to force anything on Hanabi which she doesn't want by herself, and what she might actually regret afterwards.

And just for the record, any guy who has their boners stroked by a pretty and available girl in their beds, and who asks her to stop because otherwise he wouldn't be able to hold back anymore, deserves a major thumbs-up in my book.

But if it's trial and error, why aren't Mugi and Hanabi going after their loved ones again? Is their love truly that strong?

Hanabi doesn't because she is smart enough to know that should she confess now, she has no chance of being accepted - and remaining the little sister at least maintains the hope for a change in the future.

Mugi - can't respond to this without spoiling.

I meant that her tone was quite amusing, soft, not lustful, more playful. Also I don't think Mugi was really trying to project Akane-san through Hanabi at that moment either.

He was. Rewatch timecode 19:02 - "Akane-san" during his climax, when she was still wearing her yellow shirt that she wore when she was crawling into his bed.

I mean he's thinking of a hearbroken ex braking up, right? And afterwards she showed her hand wanting to love him, but it just ended there, after all the awkward teasing.

That was a timeskip back (admittedly, easy to miss). This is the sequence:

1) Hanabi visits him in her yellow shirt and crawls into his bed
2) She's giving him a handjob, Mugi climaxes with "Akane-san" and squirts on her clothes (that's what Mugi apologizes for at 16:30)
3) Hanabi changes into a grey/white T-shirt from Mugi
4) Afterwards, wearing the grey/white T-shirt, Hanabi admits that she feels at ease with Mugi, and cries that she'd want to start falling in love with him for real

Mei's flashback was an episode from Mugi's past, where she more or less ate him up without real romantic inclinations, and then dropped him. This was just sex of convenience, without big feelings attached from Mei's side. Mugi was hurt about that (which is why he cried a bit).

And after his sexual experience with Mei, isn't it rather than he doesn't want to have sex with someone who he does not love? Rather than being a gentleman or even restrained. [/spoiler]

Like I showed before, he DOES channel Akane during sex. But due to the easy availability of sex for Mugi, he is less urge-driven than your average teenager. He _does_ care for Hanabi in his own way, which is why he has his constant "are you sure you want to do this" safeguards.

Hope this helps a bit.

The emotional and physical intimacy between the characters were so surprising, where on every mature scenes, I'm just like on shocked, ftw :O. Excellent episode. I'm getting used to that "manga panel style". Still a bit annoying but it felt like they used it less this episode. The char design is super good and Hanabi really is beautiful and seems fragile and she is a char you can't stop wanting to protect her. (I'm sure it will hurt to see should she get hurt in the anime.)

So she has Ecchan and the guy has that other loli girl liking him. And he seemed not that fragile but now they showed a bit of his past. Interesting how he had sex with the other girl that thought of it as casual sex while he loved her.

For Hanabi it already seems like she is a bit in love with the guy and not realizing it. I mean she "wants to love him" and she thinks about the female teacher and him not realizing that female teacher likes other guys. The pacing so far is good.

This show has something really beautiful to it, It's like every scene is an art piece (And not just because the style is gorgeous) I can't quite put it into words really.

Fragile? Hmmm...

To be honest, one of the things I really REALLY like about Hanabi is that she is uncharacteristically made of much sterner stuff than the typical female romance protagonists (either the feisty tsundere or the gentle goody-two-shoes). She confronts her opponents, and she takes bad news/developments without losing her spirit.

Look at the key scene at the end of ep3, where she grits her teeth to confront Akane, essentially telling herself "In the past, I may have looked at you as a potentially better match for onii-chan, but no more. I hate you!"

Maybe "vulnerable" is the better word. She cares, she can be hurt, and she can cry. But I don't see her break so easily.

Hanabi doesn't because she is smart enough to know that should she confess now, she has no chance of being accepted - and remaining the little sister at least maintains the hope for a change in the future.
So why isn't she fostering such a change instead? It's still chasing after your love, but via indirect means instead.

He was. Rewatch timecode 19:02 - "Akane-san" during his climax, when she was still wearing her yellow shirt that she wore when she was crawling into his bed.
Now that's something easily missable. Nor was it impactful to where I would notice.

Yeah, I mistook it and understood it backwards. Mei had her fun, while he was just green.

Like I showed before, he DOES channel Akane during sex. But due to the easy availability of sex for Mugi, he is less urge-driven than your average teenager. He _does_ care for Hanabi in his own way, which is why he has his constant "are you sure you want to do this" safeguards.
How is sex easily available to Mugi again? I mean he doesn't do it with Hanabi so far.

Hope this helps a bit.
It did, ty.

I'm just waiting for Mugi to be seduced in next episodes by bitch-sensei and Hanabi losing her shit about it.

(My predictions for the future of this series. Haven't read manga, waiting for the anime to end before I pick it up =x )

This going to be good!!

T3hSource: Those are several good questions, but I really can't say much more to them without spoiling, so let's wait for episode 4.

But I hope that I was able to give some examples of substance in this story, and a perspective of what KnH is all about. Right now, we're still in the exposition of the character types and templates of "unrequited love" in its various forms. What the people struggle with. And - hinted at in this episode for the first time - what they will actually do about it. As you could see, even though their inner thoughts and feelings are made perfectly clear via "inner voice dialog", there's enough to be understood or misunderstood in interpreting the meaning of what's happening.

Certainly not for everybody, and I can fully understand those people who can't gain access to the show. But I maintain very seriously that this is a _gem_ for people who love character-driven animes. And it's very very uncommon in its style - for people like me, some highly appreciated fresh air in the genre.

The pacing has been 4 chapters per episode, which means we should look forward to the next episode assuming it will cover up to Ch 16.
