"there is nothing gay about Yuri on Ice"

Why do some of these fans not understand that guys don't want to watch a fujo pandering anime with guys ice skating.

Not really, and all female cast would also be dismissed as waifu bait or pandering or something of that sort by a group of people .
But I admit I would have probably watched it if it were all female cast lol

I'm sorry but this thread is annoying, it's just turned into a bash yuri and all girl anime thread.
I tend to think that this would be less popular if it was a yuri since according to this thread, yuri is nothing but ecchi.

It depends
Your favorite Keijo!!!!!!!!! only sells a few hundred
I have not watched it
But if it has Plushenko in it I will jump to it. Male skate features speed and spin much more strongly. It's like a different dimension.

I will never watch it because it's all-guy.

I would've also rejected it had it been all-girl because it would've been too unoriginal.

Even with male and females characters... it would have been less successful because Fujoshi and Ecchi lovers would be bored. And ice skating by itself is too small of a pull to get people to watch it.

Depends in what way you're defining popularity.

If you ask me, no. Girls love to fetishize gay men too much.

Not sure if you'd care to know Kaleido Star is out there! Well I wouldn't call it yuri necessarily, but you can squint and see it?

Why 'one demographic'? I'm assuming that you are referring to fujoshis, and that is something that I have to disagree with. I've seen plenty of males watch this series, and other such mostly/all-male cast sports anime. It's the same as saying that an 'all-female' series is aimed to the 'one demographic' of yuri-loving males.
If you look beyond your need for jiggling breasts in every series, then you may come to realise that this anime has a lot of plot and character development - it goes beyond what y'all people try to call 'fujobait' (the author themselves confirmed (thought subtly) that it is, in fact, a relationship).

Hell, if this were in fact an all-female series instead, all y'all would get would be cheap fan-service and lots of ''moe'' or ''ecchi'' rather than actual plot - and you know it.

This is pretty much what I want to say to everyone out there hating on Yuri on Ice for being 'fujobait'.

Pretty sure it would be less popular. For how loud and vocal a lot of the people who hate on it because it has male characters that interact with each other are, they are still a minority overall, they just try to hide that fact by being very vocal and obnoxious about it. Most people, including males do not have their issues no matter how much they insist on spamming that only fujoshis can watch and enjoy shows with more than one male character. Yuri on Ice and how popular it is with both genders proves that more than anything. Anyone thinking it's popularity is 100% based on female watchers is a sad, delusional fuck who needs to talk to normal people for once to realize that he is wrong. Without male viewers the show would be significantly less popular.
Lots of males and females enjoy the show as it is and many of them would not have been interested if it was just looking like another moeblob fanservice show without much substance. Those people probably wouldn't go out of their way to insult the show like the 'I-hate-male-characters' crowd but they just wouldn't be interested in it. It would have attracted some other people but overall the popularity would have declined and instead of being #2 in popularity it might not even be in the top 10.

Probably not. There is a market for female oriented fan service as well, and every once in a while a show with pretty boys need to come along. Besides, this can be perfectly enjoyed by men. Unless you're some faggot that isn't comfortable with your own masculinity or sexuality. Real men can enjoy the beauty and grace of the male body as well. But having a cute female character would help balance things out and make things more popular for guys for sure. A cute fucking loli.

Not true, in the slightest. It's popular right now DUE to the male cast, and the forced yaoi. Yuri on ice was meant to target the crazy horny tumblr fangirls, which is doing right now. So it's popular because of the large female fanbase. I don't see that happening with a female cast.

Everything can be more popular if you add cute girls to the mix ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

OT: Have not yet watch it, but i will assume that probably yes. There is a lot of people that dismiss the show due to the fact that it has a all male-cast.

No, as you can see females are more sexually deprived than males in the anime community, as evident with the amount of Yaoi there is in the anime and manga community. Yuri will never be as popular as Yaoi.

I definitely would've actually watched it in that case... To be perfectly honest, I simply can't take male figure skating in anime seriously, it's CLEARLY fujoshi bait. It ruins it for me. An all-female cast doing figure skating would have been much more legitimate as a sports anime, no question about it.

Honestly I like the fact that it's a male cast because it's different and as a man I can appreciate the visuals in the skate routines and costume and musical flair even when it's meant to be overtly sexual. I'm exited by the prospect of more routines and bolder visuals not to mention the opening is pretty good.

Well, I would have watched if it was an all-female cast.

That's being said, I get why people feel "tricked" by its title ,but what they don't realize is that Yuri is actually also a common name for Russian males, so its not meant to refer to that kind of yuri that is girl x girl nor is it trying to trick anyone or bait anyone (well other than maybe yaoi fans).

Yuri on Ice has actually been extremely in the mainstream for the anime community this season, so it's not like it's not on everyone's radar.

That being said, a lot of anime fans literally only watch anime for fanservice, so if they aren't gay men or straight women, of course they're going to skip over it.

Hmm I would say most likely not. Well it depends what you mean by popular, if you meant amount the western anime fandom then yeah but if you mean in terms of how many people are going to buy it, fujos are just a less saturated market.

Anime is good, fucking deal with it.

I think it's because they're both guys the anime is popular and loved. It does not have the typical "but-we're-both-guys"; sexuality is not important in the anime. It brings queer bating anime shows to shame and breaks the cliche, in my perspective.

It would probably have bit less viewers. It would share some of viewer-base as it does now, people that watch it for ice-skating and people who watch it for good same-sex romance (that are sadly still rare if not almost non-existent in anime). But it would lack some that watch it for BL reasons. It would gain viewers who would be into girlxgirl, but probably less than it gains BL fans. I doubt it would really gain many ecchi fans, the fanservice is quite low really and has dropped lot since first episodes. There was none in EP9..

In terms of people saying it's somewhat not realistic anime cause it has male skaters- skating wise it's actually realistic. YOU has many professional skaters as viewers and it's skating routines are choreographed by actual skating choreographer who is ex-pro skater himself.

Probably, but it doesn't matter, because a rip-off with female characters will probably come soon, and the fact that it's a ripoff will matter less because of it. If something similar with female characters had come first, I'm sure this show would get pretty much no recognition.
Be thankful for the wisdom granted to you.

All female sports have been done before and all of them flopped. Idols, males and females, have a viewership. Nobody in Japan cares about watching female centered sports in anime it seems.

there was already an ice-skating all-female cast...it's called PRAD, though it's mostly an idol series.

I don't know if it would be more popular with a female cast, but I hope that's not the case. I'm saying this because if we just changed it so that all the characters were girls, but everything else remained the same, I'm quite sure the people who would prefer it with a female cast wouldn't be any more interested in it than they are now. Those viewers would probably just be expecting to get a lot of female fanservice, or, which I don't think would be any better, they think that figure skating is a too feminine sport for men. In either case, I think that a big theme in Yuri on Ice is breaking that stereotype, as well as portraying Viktor and Yuri's relationship without fetishizing it, and so the male cast works great with it.

I definitely wouldn't mind watching a female sports anime that focuses on the sport and isn't full of fanservice, but I'm afraid that's not what certain people would be expecting from Yuri on Ice if it had a female cast. (Not that there's anything wrong with fanservice, it's just not what Yuri on Ice is about - except for some of the comedy, but that's not the main point in the series)

Tbh I think if it managed to keep the emotion/comedy on the same level a cute light yuri story would have dont just as well, but who knows? Kiss him not me is fairly well liked this season but if genders were swapped people might have written it off as a harem show.
