I've been wondering for a while now why I haven't been enjoying DRRR as much as I used. And the answer is that MIkado has become an imbecile of the highest category. Nothing he does makes any sense to me anymore: goals, methods or results. The more the series focuses on other characters, the better.

I'm just gonna add an addendum to my last post.

This pacing still bothers the unbelievable hell out of me. It really isn't as cohesively following the novel from my perspective. I'm not saying I expected an 100% faithful adaption, but I am sorely disappointed by the fact that they tried to compact 12 and 13 into one twelve episode cour, when it really should've been longer. Although the original novel had its flaws, especially regarding Nasujima's reappearance and many of his motives being vaguely left up to interpretations (the only reason I am able to fill in the blanks is actually liking and psychoanalyzing him, which by the way took years to really confirm, and when the novel confirmed he was a crazy mess, booooyyy did I scream in happiness. only to be just as disappointed that he reappeared to not do much of anything or not to have as much page time. fuck Narita.) , the anime worsens the novels flaws by showing everything at 1.5x speed whilst keeping the novel's intensity. That's messing up the enjoyment factor for me. By no means did I like how rushed the novels felt on their own accord, but the anime feels to be even more of a rush than them. Should've been longer, but if that'd been the case, the animation might as well have been unfinished line drawings, since it's clear Shuka has a meager budget and isn't receiving great funding or support for their work here, as evidenced by how sloppy the animation has been, particularly in this Ketsu cour. That combined probably urged them to make a more rushed adaption. Sucks being a new studio. Still annoyed, tough.

I didn't understand a thing of what Mikado did or tried to do this whole season. Why is he trying to kill himself? If the dollars have no leader by definition what does he accomplish?

Also what's the purpose of cleansing the dollars if he lets the blue square in.

Well from what I understood it seems Mikado wasn't actually going to kill himself at first. He had the Dollars meeting and was going to kill his best friend to show all the members how much a scumbag of a leader he was bcuz he was going against the ideals he wanted for the Dollars. After that he was hoping the Dollars would just end. But then he realized how horrible of a person he was and that he would continue on doing horrible things so he decided to kill himself also hoping the Dollars would just end.

And he let the Blue Squares in bcuz they were helping him with the cleansing. And I think he forced all those motorcycle gang members to be proper Dollars members by blackmailing them maybe...not so sure on that part.

You're right on him realizing he's an awful person after shooting Kida and also right on blackmailing the biker gangs, but he never planned to shoot Kida in first place. He says it in this episode that he wants to end the Dollars in style and make it an urban legend in a way that no one will want to join it again and everyone that's part of it will either quit or lie about being on the Dollars. That's why he did all those terrible things shown this week (including shooting a yakuza).

Shijima says it around 20:35 this episode. I don't actually remember in which episode he met Mikado and had the chance to do that, but I'm sure it happened.

I'm pretty sure very early in this cour (either episode 1 or 2, more likely 1) Shijima showed up and met up with Mikado as he was patching up the Blue Square members and making sure they were alright. Then he kinda disappeared until he met up with Nasujima in episode 3, I think.

First of all, there were some really nice shots throughout this episode. There was one in particular where Mikado and Kida were talking and the choreography was very nice.
On the content of the episode itself, if I understood it correctly, Mikado's plan was basically to make the Dollars meet and then get wiped out by the yakuzas he pissed off for that purpose. While that makes sense, I feel as if his breakdown was slightly forced, but considering his behaviour up till now, it's not really out of the blue for him to lose it. A bit disappointed that Izaya and Shizuo's showdown is being dragged quite a bit without any really meaningful events, though.
Btw, the noise at the end didn't sound like a gunshot at all.
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

Mikado always wanted to escape from the 'ordinary life' which is why he created the Dollars. However it wasn't enough because the supernatural life he wanted to have soon becomes an ordinary life. Hence he keeps on involving himself deeper with the supernatural but then again it became an ordinary for him again. That's where he realize that he's in a vicious cycle and he realized he's not sane anymore. He's willing to even shoot his Masaomi or Anri in order to go deeper with the supernatural life and he hated it. He doesn't want to hurt the people he cares for to reach an unrealistic goal like that and that's where he decided to end himself.

Man, the way the studio directed that scene with Mikado and Masaomi was better than I expected. I was also impressed by Mikado's VA, Toshiyuki Toyonaga for his act with Mikado, especially in that emotional scene. Final episode next week! I'm really scared but excited for it, I'm going to miss this show so bad now :(

And he was willing to reach deep enough in order to get that. It kinda became his obsession and with it his darker nature came afloat. But even he is disgusted with himself.

And this what makes his character so interesting. He has no choice but to end himself because of that dark nature. Keep in mind that he was originally very honest and kind-hearted guy until the whole Dollars fiasco happened. His greed towards power overwhelmed him too much and thus becomes of what he is now

Great episode, Mikado my boy, don't die, what could we do without you? The episode was literally utter chaos. I'm interested to see how this will all wrap up. To the light novel readers, is this the final volume? If not, how many are left, and if yes, are there any content that was skipped? I'm interested in reading as much of Durarara!!! as I can.

This episode will conclude the main LN series. However, there is a sequel LN currently publishing, so this isn't the end of Durarara.

I will never understand what's going on in Mikado's head. Masaomi :(

Shizuo's getting pumped up there and he's scaring the Saika mother guy. Wonder what's still going on with Celty. Honestly, Shinya's dedication is admirable, no wonder the other Saika woman is confessing.

the reason why i love this series because i seriously can't predict what's about to happen. Last episode next week huh? Let's see how it ends.

The sequel LN is the exact same setup as the first, though, and the characters share quite a bit of similarity as far as the new ones go to the old, I dont see why all the hype is there for SH to be adapted too quickly, it's not really that great, it's a dry reprise to me from what I read. The scenario feels like a replica of the first, I was expecting different, and I can honestly say I was disappointed enough to drop it early on. Not even a new villain or a vague reappearance from my beloved character who deserves more development. I wanted to grovel in a corner.

Although I feel like Narita was more or less forced or roped into the continuation of the series by the publisher he's under for pandering reasons, which is why it felt so half assed. Someone I was talking with this about on YT agreed that Narita likely had his conclusive end as of volume 13, but was ultimately pressured into releasing new material by the LN publishers. Considering how much creative freedom they give writers of popular series, what they're expected to pen vs. what they want to, it wouldn't be the first time to think that something like that has happened.

inb4 "YOU HAVE THE AUDACITY TO SMASH SH WHEN YOU DROPPED IT" comments. I'm just stating my opinion. Don't think Narita wanted a direct continuation, volume 13 sure had a lot of finality, the best I could imagine him doing was spinoff, along the lines of the Izaya prequel novel, which he did, but not SH. Needless to say I'm certifiably "meh" about the SH's existence, more just wrought with moderate disappointment over it rather than rage, hurt, or joy. Until something reappears that'll bring me some excitement, SH is merely another cog in the pandering machine. As much as I hate to admit it, since Izaya is my least favored character in the entire series, Narita's better creative choice that he should've done solely after DRRR's ending was the Izaya novel. That at least had some differentiation to it instead of copypasting the format from the first part of DRRR, with the same amount of high school kids being focused upon, in the same town, with a similar focus. The kids have damn similar personalities, it's not even funny, even if their backstories differ. Kuon kid = Mikado, Himeka = Anri, Yahiro = Masaomi. YYYYYYAWN. what i really want, and will never get.... Nasujima prequel novel, Nasujima prequel noooovel!

I'd guessed that mikado wouldn't shoot masaomi but when he pointed the gun at himself, I was speechless, I just don't know what to expect from him anymore.

Shizuo and Izaya having a final showdown, does izaya really think he can win with a knife against the beast?

Because I really can't see Celty being the focus of next episode, which she'd have to be in order to give them a proper send off... Unless thats covered in the sequel or a spinoff?

I don't even know what to say anymore. If Mikado actually dies that would be the most unexpected thing ever. Even though it looked like this for a while now I never thought they'd actually pull through with it. But how could he possibly be alive after that situation unless he hit some really unlucky spot and survived a shot to his head.

Well the rest was pretty interesting. Yumasaki once more tries to burn Izumii xD And Shizuo just is on a rampage. Seriously at this point I don't think he'd stop before either he or Izaya is actually dead. But why does that Saika guy lose his cool over it? Sure he can't take him on directly but it's not like Shizuo attacks without reason. As long as he leaves Shizuo alone he shouldn't expect any attack.
