In the US at least, bigger lips are seen as attractive. I don't agree with it but that's just the notion here. And in Japan bigger eyes are seen as attractive I think.

Do pussy lips count? They probably draw those, but you wouldn't know since they're censored.

I have been Google image searching popular shoujo anime and they generally don't constantly have lips either except for Nana.

It does seem like a difference in beauty standard because of culture. I have noticed that in super hero cartoons lips are used for character diversity like eyes are for anime characters. So like how anime characters have all kinds of weird eye colors female super heroes and villains (not all but a noticeable amount) wear weird color lipstick like blue, green, purple, brown, black. Female characters with black lipstick always tend to be villains for example in the DCAU.

They want their characters to have huge eyes that's why their lips must be a straight black line.

There are a lot of anime past 2010 that have lips especially in close up shots. The reason for no lips usually is to save time and budget drawing them on. What I noticed though most anime nowadays released in the past few years have characters with lips in close up shots.

Lips, noses, etc aren't easy to draw, and because most anime studios don't have big budgets and a lot of time to work with, they have to keep the drawings simple. Only big, successful studios like Shaft and Production IG can afford lips, haha.

Yes, in fact during the Edo period there was a legend concerning the lip monsuta which brought forth a climate of horror and anxiety. The monster was said to resemble a pair of big sausage lips which roamed around communities each night, devouring innocent souls.

Hence the Japanese developed a lip phobia

I don't care if you're not sexually attracted to either one. I personally think that a wooden chair is more attractive than a plastic one.

What I'm trying to get across is that often lips show femininity or vanity rather than attractiveness.

Fuck sakes, someone eventually had to post ponies. I'm out.

I don't watch as much anime as before...

Okay this thread is kind of old (little over 3 months) but I have recently come across 2 things that make me believe it's a cultural thing with lips.

First thing

The French animation production company Zagtoon approached Toei animation to do an anime for a concept by a French cartoonist called Miraculous Ladybug. Toei did a pv for it but Zagtoon didn't decide to go with it and instead decided on a CG cartoon for it instead. In Toei's anime version the main female protagonist has no nose really and no lips whatsoever

while in the cgi western cartoon version the same character looks completely different. The character has a clearly visible nose and clearly visible lips.

Thus looking similar to Disney's cutesy female animated characters. To me that hints at a cultural difference in regard to female character design. For the Japanese for a female character to be cute, noses and lips should be omitted or not focused on and the eyes take center stage but in the West a female character can be cute, have large eyes and also have lips and noses.

Second thing

This Yahoo article https://www.yahoo.com/health/selfies-america-vs-china-tell-222900246.html

What I got from this article is that Chinese girls /women try to accentuate their eyes when taking selfies to be cute while the feature American girls/women may focus on is their lips by making a duck face.

In the Chinese selfies we are seeing a lot of focus on eyes here
while in the American selfies lips are the most prominent and eyes less so.

So from this new information I would definitely say the Japanese and other East Asians generally don't really care about female lips and don't see them as a major form of attraction and this transfers to anime characters. It has nothing to do with budget and stuff like that.

Oh yeah I definitely agree. I really, really, really hate Toei's version. Toei's version is too childish and boring looking. The CGI Marinette is one of the cutest female western cartoon characters.
