Do you adhere to the negative image held of anime fans?

For anyone interested in the medium of anime, I'm sure it's no secret among us that some non-anime lovers hold some pretty negative images on the "typical" anime fan (e.g. lolicons/paedophiles, virgin nerds/geeks, morons, waifu/husbando/harem obsessed virgins, yaoi fangirls, weeaboos, edgy teenagers, NEETs and otakus, etc.)

Would you say you "fit in" with any of the "stereotypes" held on anime fans? And if so, to what extent?
Or, would you say you "refute" the negative imagery of anime lovers? If so, how? And again, to what extent?
Or do you identify with "something" else entirely? (e.g. "I'm not even an anime fan, nothing about me should reflect on the anime community in any kind of way, be it negatively or positively. Whatcha on about?")

I don't really look like I fit into any specific stereotype, or at least I don't think I do.
People that know me probably just think I'm just boring or something.

Hey, read this post, love, and read it well. I don't fit into any of those stereotypes. I'm sexy, I'm confident, my willy has seen the action and I'm not a weeb. Every anime fan should aspire to be like me. Now where is my wine and steak? Hurry up, chop chop!

i used to think i was a little pervy, but anime made me realize just how much farther down the rabbit hole i could go lol. i dont like to go outside and im antisocial. but i do ride my exercise bike so that i can stay around 200lbs and a 36waist. im also married my wife doesnt like anime at all. so call it happy medium or just somewhere in the middle? maybim half obsessive weeb otaku and half semi normal. so maybe a bias towards the anime side.

I'm just a normal person, as I'm sure most anime fans are.

There are some fanatical types out there, and since anime is a niche that's what gets focused on by those who aren't familiar with anime or it's culture. They focus on how it's different. Not what it has in common with anything else.

As I said, most of use are normal people, so we don't have anyone to answer to as far as being socially acceptable goes. We just like a medium that isn't popular (at least not yet). So in that regard, I and many of us probably "refute" the sterotypes regarding anime fans. That said, what I don't understand is this complex that some anime fans seems to have where they feel this need to prove how "normal" and unlike "anime fans" they are. We know and we don't care. Doing this just perpetuates the sterotypes by giving the impression that being an anime "fan" is something to be ashamed of. Cut that shit out please.

people assume i am a homeless drug addict quite often, wich is funny cause i refuse to even drink alcohol.

But when I see some of the posts and threads throughout this site, I kind of have to wonder if this website is one of those things that aids in giving bad impressions to those outside of the "anime community" if they ever happen to stumble across some MAL threads on Google search. I don't know why anyone that's disinterested in the medium would happen upon MAL in the first place, but there's always that possibility when they're trying to find out more about anime for whatever reason.

There isn't really such an image here in England since barely anyone even knows what anime is.

I guess I fit some of the criteria though, like being geeky or whatever. No one would ever be able to guess it from taking a look at me though. Aesthetically I don't have any of the typical physical traits.

I enjoy watching anime, I served my country, I have a social life, I go to college, I workout, I like to say I have a semblance of a normal life.

Your hobbies or interests don't always have to define who you are, the only people who make assumptions are those too closed minded to get to know you.

I know guys who watch anime and are as "normal" as can be.

I think the reason why I feel comfortable to talk about liking anime (not like "omg so otaku", but just simply saying I like it) is because I don't look like a nerd when people first notice me.
When I was a bit dorkier looking and heavier I felt more embarassed about liking it because I thought "people already think I'm ugly, I don't want them to think I'm a fucking weeb either". But I never liked that bull shit loli, shota, yaoi/yuri fan shit, bull shit moe, otaku whatever the fuck, etc....

I don't act like a stereotypical aggressive weeb, but I do watch anime a lot -_-

Definitely some of them, I'm sort of a Hikikomori but that's mainly because I just think better alone. I m a virgin but that's because I'm Asexual, Aromatic. I am a geek so I can only talk to a few people about the stuff I'm interested in. I could only talk to other geeks in high school because all the normal people were obsessed with Call of Duty, Sports and stupid reality shows (Jersey Shore for example) and stuff I had no interest in.

I don't know why anyone that's disinterested in the medium would happen upon MAL in the first place, but there's always that possibility when they're trying to find out more about anime for whatever reason.

Well MAL can be a very strange and hostile place, I'll give you that. But I think it's a mistake to blame the weirder people for the stereotypes that anime has. In England there are football(soccer) hooligans; people who are often part of football firms and disturb the peace whenever there's a game and sometimes cause riots over match results. This doesn't even consider the people who aren't part of firms or anything but just generally get carried away when matches are on. These dudes are just as fanatic as any weeb is, if not more so. But if you tell someone you like football nobody's going to assume that you are part of that subculture or put you in any kind of box. Because football is well known, popular and socially acceptable.

Also, look at any football match and you'll see it's full of fanatics. This is fine imo, there is a time and place where people should be able to cut loose and be themselves, as long as they are considerate to those around them. This is why we have conventions, forums and things like that. What I think is douchey is people insulting anime fans for being too into their thing on an anime forum or anywhere else meant for anime fans to congregate. I see this fairly often on MAL and if you ask me, anime fans who try to project an air of "I'm too cool for this shit" is a stereotype in itself, which is pretty funny if you think about it. But yeah, no one shits on people being hyped for the Superbowl. That's something to consider.

tl;dr ver: My point being that anime stereotypes exist because of stupid people who cannot accept that not everyone in a social group is the same, as well as the fact that anime isn't understood well by the average Joe. A fanatical, vocal minority doesn't define everyone and everything within it's subculture. If someone has a problem with how they're perceived as an anime fan, then they should grow a spine and take it up with the people who marginalise us without knowing what they're talking about.

Normal? Kyaaaa! ..
What is normal though?.. to me that word's meaning varies drastically depending on an individual's own perception, tastes and environment.

Ive always proudly call myself a nerd, i Cosplay & craft my own costumes, I have a Star wars fettish, i collect memorabilia.
I'm addicted to Anime & I watch several episodes every night, but I'm still a functional adult.

I own a small business.
A Virgin I am Not, I always had boyfriends, & now married I am.
I'm a bookworm, I love Manga also , & sometimes i secretly sketch my favorite characters into NSFW situations (no its not yaoi, but I'm not anti- yaoi either)
I took Japanese in Highschool, and my best friend was an exchange student from Tokyo, so I've loved the culture for a long time, but I'm not a weeb.
I love the outdoors; I like to surf, swim, free dive, hike, camp, worked on a boat for 3 years, I've bungee jumped, I'm physically fit.

I dont fangirl over human actors, but I think 2d men are incredibly sexy 😍, and hearing certain Seiyūs voices makes me thirsty... In full disclosure - i get super turned on by watching Anime (not H) that has handsome op male leads and ecchi fan service.. the husband reaps the benefits, so luckily he doesn't mind me perving over the likes of ousawa, akatsuki or sai, akuto or the Free! boys etc ...lol

To me I'd say sure I'm "normal", but I told a girlfriend about my 2d attractions , and she laughed at me... so in her brain I'm a weirdo lol ..but Who cares right? If what we enjoy personally, doesn't have any negative effects on others , shouldn't we just do what makes us happy?

I'm personally not cool with the pedophile type stuff, and incest isn't really wincest in my opinion (the exception being non blood related; like in Kiss x Sis) , but If cuddling with a kawaii waifu pillow👯 , or a squishy oppai mouse pad makes you happy, just do it.. to me it's really no different than people owning stuffed animals 🐼🐺. .lol!

Yeah, we do know.
(e.g. lolicons/paedophiles
And they're so wrong on this matter. Lolicons aren't pedophiles or vice-versa, necessarily.

I am both though.

, virgin nerds/geeks, morons, waifu/husbando/harem obsessed virgins, yaoi fangirls, weeaboos, edgy teenagers, NEETs and otakus, etc.)
I'm none of these. I'm not a virgin, I don't know if you can define me as a nerd or geek, I'm not a moron, I'm not obsessed with harems or whatever, I'm not a fangirl and not a yaoi fanboy either, I'm not a weeaboo, I actually don't like most of the Japanese culture, I'm not edgy, I might be a NEET if you want to stretch it and I'm not an otaku either.

Anyway, people are stupid, I don't really care what untrue stereotypes say.
