I used to do Yoga a year ago but had to skip it for GYM as I was more focused on Getting Muscular .

How many of you do Yoga ( Real one ) and not the Erotic and Stupid Yoga taught by some in West .

And what are your views on Yoga ?

( Some Religious groups are against Yoga in West and to your surprise , Yoga faces opposition from certain section of Society in India too )


Just read an Article as per which , there are 37 million yoga practitioners in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA .

I've never done yoga, but I dont have anything against it. It seems like a good way to de-stress and get a bit of exercise.

The only experience I have with yoga are those weird alternative sessions we did during PE in high school sometimes. We also had this weird New Age teacher during religious classes, and she'd make us have meditation and yoga sessions. Super weird. I have some issues with my knees which makes it very painful to do certain positions, so I gave up on it.

I don't know what constitutes 'real' yoga anyway, and I can't say I care enough to find out.

Recently , There was a Yoga Guru in US who was slapped heavy fine of many million dollars for sexual harassment . One news channel showed how he teaches Yoga and sad to say it wasn't Yoga .

People cramped in Small rooms doing erotic stuff isn't Yoga in real sense .

Do U agree that Yoga has become a Money making machine for many ?

@ashishkaull I was asking because some people consider it not real yoga if it lacks the spiritual stuff and is just the positions. So i'd have to wonder what else there is to it.

Well everything can be profited from. Hell, people sell bottled water.

LOL , You are right in your assessment .

To me Yoga has 2 Primary aspects .

01 Physical , That deals with Body and Union of Body parts

02 Meta-Physical , That deals with Union of Body with Spirit or Real Self , A way to self realization .

Most people only perform the 1st one also popularly known as Secular Yoga or may be hatha Yoga . But I am worried about the way its taught in West . I have seen some videos and I always wonder what these guys are doing . By this I don't mean they are doing it wrong but Its totally different to way I have come across .

Some stretching exercises are included into Yoga and Portrayed as part of Yoga .

What kind of videos are you watching? Are they youtube videos of random people in yoga classes or are they yoga shows or just youtubers trying to make a video? We have instructional yoga shows on tv on some channels, you could look at those to see how things are taught . I've been in a yoga class once before, it was cramped a little but nothing seemed really off about it, they barely even touched people when correcting their position but that differs by the instructor. The other time I did yoga was in a class my sister was in for college and I came with her the only problem I had there was girls kept thinking i was checking out their butts but I was just looking around me like normal >_< The other times were not in classes so I will leave that out as its not instructional.

This is one of the more peculiar positions I did in the class I did at a gym. Surprised I did not break my spine. I did not touch my feet to the ground though

Yup ! That pic is good . Goddamn , I can't do asanas like these . I can only do the simple ones .

I saw some on Youtube and some were showed on News Channels .
The ones that were shown on news channels were from Yoga institutes and some from the institutes of People who are punished for sexual harassment .

my friend who was in India said that "western" yoga is not to be found in India at all, not sure if there's anything true about that

I downloaded 45 min of something called "fat burning yoga"
it's great for stretching.
guess that doesn't count as yoga though

Beginners lacking flexible body can't do that . Even after months , I struggled in keeping legs down for more than 2 seconds .

Even keeping legs straight/perpendicular for few seconds is a tough task .

I do 'real' yoga. I mean it's just Ashtanga Yoga, I've got this Iyengar book that i use for a really simple routine. Also go to classes sometimes, which are slightly more power yoga but still good.

Yoga's great, man. Keeps your chakras open!

Because People think it has its roots in Dharmic traditions of Hindus , Jains and Buddhists . And any cultural practice coming from Pagans is not welcomed

My gym teacher in highschool used to have us do some yoga... once I entered Uni though it was all HIIT cardio and lifting. I don't really care about being flexible and for relaxation I just meditate.

not to sound preachy but..flexibility is important. it has something to do with growth of a particular type of muscle tissue, idk, they always tell us at my gym to stretch on rest days.

Yup I Know that but what I found was more strange .

I read about some Pagan practices and Influence on Christianity but no idea if they are true .

Pagan may also mean Polytheist , Not sure about it tough .
Hindus may appear Polytheist but only a small section of Us are Polytheist .

I've been hitting the weights for a pretty long time. Yoga increases flexibility and that is important for you, especially later in life.

Yoga works best with the internal Organs .

Despite being a Gym Freak , I will put Gym especially weight lifting below Yoga , when it comes to improving Internal Organs .

haha i did try yoga for like a week because supposedly it would really help loosen up my back muscles and make me more flexible because of my slouch, im sure it would have but it was too much work so i stopped.

Well it's not like I don't stretch before and after exercises I just don't see the need to contort my body in all sorts of weird poses be able to do the splits, but yeah stretching is important if you don't wanna get cramps and shit.

I signed up for a class with a couple of my friends, and surprise surprise it was actually harder than it looks. It definitely helped me with my flexibility, though I got out of it and I'm too ashamed to do it again.

it's incredibly hard, actually, especially for adults who have lost a lot of their childhood flexibility. Yoga can help you retain that very well. Actually as a kid, I was naturally able to do the full lotus pose. When I tried later in life though, I found that my knees were too stiff. But now after doing yoga, I can do full lotus again! :D

Not a yoga person, but a pilates one. Though I would like to try hot yoga one day and see what that's all about.

I'd much prefer doing either of those than going to the gym and using equipment.

You should do it after rather than before. Contrary to what is told a lot I've heard being stretched out before increases risk of injury.

What kind of videos are you watching? Are they youtube videos of random people in yoga classes or are they yoga shows or just youtubers trying to make a video? We have instructional yoga shows on tv on some channels, you could look at those to see how things are taught . I've been in a yoga class once before, it was cramped a little but nothing seemed really off about it, they barely even touched people when correcting their position but that differs by the instructor. The other time I did yoga was in a class my sister was in for college and I came with her the only problem I had there was girls kept thinking i was checking out their butts but I was just looking around me like normal >_< The other times were not in classes so I will leave that out as its not instructional.

This is one of the more peculiar positions I did in the class I did at a gym. Surprised I did not break my spine. I did not touch my feet to the ground though

I do Sivananda yoga every week and I enjoy it a lot. Used to do Ashtanga but it was a little bit too exhausting for me since I'm not in a peak physical condition and get tired fast. It's something I recommend whole hearty to anyone who has the slightest interest in doing it. :)

@JustALEX heh it was at a fitness centre. They go a little too fast to keep up without knowing what you're doing though.

If U have Disk or very weak Lower Back . Consult a Doctor or an Authentic Yoga Guru before doing it .

Then better consult a Doctor .

My dad was pretty Good in Yoga but he has a Disk now and is advised not to do it .
