Yeah, it is relatively serious. I somehow forgot about that criteria as I was writing.

Anyone seen AKB0048? How prevalent is the mecha?

I actually can't remember, but the main characters don't actually pilot any/often.

It's pretty fab if you like power of music, a bit of idol grind, and can enjoy AKB48 songs. Probably my favourite Kawamori series.

Deciding between AKB0048 and Xenoglossia as my first idol show, bar Macross. Probably AKB0048, since it's split cour.

Kawamori's only notable for his mechanical designs anyway. Neutral on his direction, as I've only seen Macross.

Yes. 100%.

Aquarion was really shaky - it had all these character moments and world building, but it really didn't care to plot a coherent story in the end, so it all came out rather wasteful and half-baked. Unless you meant Evol which I havent seen yet.

Just mechanical doesn't make 0083 a Kawamori show, even though it turned out as silly as one.

I was joking about aquarion. I haven't seen it and know nothing about it except that the mecha is powered by 3 pilots simultaneous orgasms.

Or something like that.

I do have a fondness for it though - the OPs are amazing, the cheese was amusing, and it's ridiculously overpowered in SRW Z.

In any case, can we agree that Kawamori should stick to mecha designs?

Well, I don't know. I liked AKB ridiculously so, and Frontier was alright. On the other-hand, the shows he's headed have tended to be disappointing story-wise, true.

If he weren't around making these shows, there'd be a lot less mecha around though, so I can't say he should just stick to designing. I'd rather have his ups and downs over nothing.

I'm going to disregard your love of AKB because I remember seeing an episode of it once, and... no, just no. I'm also going to disregard your opinion that anything is better than no mecha.

That being the case, I guess we can agree that he should stick to mecha designs. Is it so wrong to want the guy to stick to doing what he does best?

If you're lamenting the lack of Macross, there's supposed to be a new one coming out... eventually.

Meanwhile I still can't get over the artstyle to actually finish Frontier.

I posted my thoughts on it in the other thread >.>

And you even replied to it.

Anyway I gave it an 8. It was bitchin' trippy at times, and the story resolution was a bitch cheap, but I find it amusing that something that old had CGI that's still better than 99% of what they make today.

That gatling gun sound effect that plays whenever another mecha got destroyed (in 0079) or when something got hit/kicked really hard (Unicorn)

I still don't understand why they used that sound effect the way they did. They used it all the time in 0079 and I was always like "who's shooting!?" but nobody was.

Anyone played the Muv-Luv VNs (Just the main entries: Extra/Unlimited/Alternative)? The mecha design is nice, but the girls and dating aspect turn me off.

I have played them all. Extra is horrible torture not going to lie, Unlimited is slightly more interesting since it has actual mecha in it. Alternative is pretty bomb though, some really good war drama and mecha warfare in it. It's questionable whether it's worth it since you would have to play Extra and Unlimited both before Alternative because it's a trilogy.

But if you feel like wasting 10 hours on terrible dating sims and another 10 hours on mediocre mecha harem before finally playing something worthwhile (And it really is very worthwhile, at least for a visual novel), then you can't go wrong. There's a reason Alternative is ranked like #1 on VNDB

Plus, Alternative has an amazing opening by JAM project:

I'm not sure if I would recommend that tbh. As bad as I thought Extra and Unlimited were, they still introduce the characters of Alternative, and Alternative uses the earlier "happy" memories of the dating sim life as an emotional device later on to Alternative. I fear some of the most emotional moments of Alternative lack some of the impact without having suffered through the extremely mellow Extra, and somewhat darker but still generally happy Unlimited.

I disliked both of the prequels a lot, but they do still work as a major nostalgic- and plotdevice later on in Alternative, even surprisingly well.

I finally started Zeta Gundam, I even had to read a summary for 0079 because the movie recaps were so unmemorable for me.
A fine start, I'm hoping for more explosions and and more angsty moments like: "You said I have a woman's name? What an unforgivable insult!"
